Default Any pet sympathy verses?

My mom will be putting her dog to sleep soon. This pet is by far the family favorite and is 13 years old. I have tried to take a lot of pictures lately and have gathered up old photos and have written some personal journaling because I plan to create her a Shutterfly book to remember our dog by. Does anyone know of any pet loss poems or verses I can use?

I'm new here, but your message hit close to home. I love the story of the Rainbow Bridge (although it makes me cry), and it's kind of lengthy so I won't type it here, but you can find it online. A few months ago, I lost one of my fur-kids unexpectedly, and the vet's office gave me a wildflower bookmark with the following:

We may not be together
In the way we used to be;
We are still connected by a
Cord no eye can see.

So whenever you need to find me
We're never far apart
If you look beyond the horizon
And listen with your heart.

I actually think I've read a longer version but I can't remember where. My sympathies to you and your family. I totally understand the emotions that go with losing a fur-child.

When we lost our fur-child, my vet sent us a sympathy card with a Forget Me Not Seed Packet enclosed so we could plant them and remember our boy every time we pass by them.

here are some i have used in the past:

Four legged friends are a very special part of any family. Special thoughts are with you
now that you've had to say goodbye.

no matter how or when we lose our furry friends, their love lasts a lifetime.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks for the poems and the thoughts! Seems like I cry every time I read these. I will definitely be able to use them in her book. Thanks again!

I like to use a phrase from a poem: "Rise up slowly, Angel. It's hard to let you go."

There's an on-line stamp company called Purrs n' Pants and it's all cat and dog stuff. I know they have lots of saying so I'm sure they must have pet sympathy sayings.

Look at DRS Designs, then look on the left side go under Greeting & Sentiments, then look under Sympathy, they have some stamps sets called, Cat Angel, Dog Angel and Pet Angel Group that are really nice and have several pet sympathy sayings. Your family are in my thoughts.

One of my friend's treasured belongings is a paw print done with air dry modeling clay that was mounted in a shadow box. You could add the Rainbow Bridge to the back of the box. The Papertreyink set is a nice one if you are looking for a stamp. My thoughts are with your mom.

Two things that gave me comfort.

First look up the song "In a Grassy Field" from the Musical Bark. I can't seem to find the lyrics printed any where but i know there are videos on youtube and then second is this poem

From Friend to Friend
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

In Memory of Asta, Feb. 1997

Here's a card I did for a friend who had to put her dog to sleep. I computer generated the sentiment on the front because I didn't have an appropriate stamp besides the usual "with sympathy" stamps.

Like others said, the Rainbow passage is wonderful. I only read it once. After 2 years, I still can't get through it again. :( Hugs to you and your family!

My personal favorite:

"Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives." ~John Galsworthy

I think it's lovely that you recognize how difficult this will be for your Mum. Might I recommend that you take a photo of your Mum with her beloved dog? We did this as family with our dog before he was put to sleep and the photo holds a special place on our fireplace mantel.

My sympathies.

Here is a saying I found in my scraps that I found shortly after I had to put my springer spaniel down.

If tears were a staircase and Memories a lane, I'd climb to heaven and bring you home again.

The bond that develops becomes ours alone, with the old dog we place on a throne.
No matter the color, the gender or size, they become "best of breed" when in our eyes.
When chasing a squirrel or snooping about, they always come running when we give a shout.
We're perceived as their master as though it's deserved. However, it's really our dog that is served.
Then comes that day that we've dreaded so much, water and food not touched.
We open our door, and there's no one to greet. There's no bark of welcome, no patter of feet.
How empty life is when our loyal friend dies. Emotions abound, and it shows in our eyes.
The tears flow freely. The pain is so great. We've lost our one friend that never knew hate.
Those who love dogs understand when it's done that the death of a dog unites us as one.

THis is one I've used many times. Not sure where it originally came from:

"They will not go quietly,
the pets whove shared our lives
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.

Old habits still can make us think
we hear them at the door
Or step back when
we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.

Or feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts belongs to them
and always will."

This thread has brought me to tears!

I ditto the Forget-Me-Not seeds.....my vet actually sent us some after we had to put our sweet kitty to sleep. It was really meaningful to plant them and watch them bloom.

Here's an exerpt from my blog post in memory of my golden retriever whom we put to sleep in July:

In her book Bliss to You, Trixie Koontz, a golden retriever who is waiting for her human parents [Dean and Gerta Koontz] at the Rainbow Bridge, shares her secrets for achieving bliss. She quotes Josh Billings, who said, "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself." Then, Trixie writes,

"Dogs give unconditional love so you will be teensy bit prepared for God's love when you die and meet Him. Otherwise, God's love would knock you flat."

That thought comforted me a bit. It's just so hard to say goodbye to our furry friends.

Here are 2 good poems. I used the first one in my dog album on his memorial page - its perfect for when they need to visit the vet for the final journey. There is also one called God's doggy door that a friend sent me when my other dog died.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

A Pet Memorial Poem for a Dog
I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And share her silent thoughts with me.
She'll come no longer to my call,
Retrieve no more her favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to His golden throne.
And though my eyes are filled with tears,
I thank Him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me,
And for her love and loyalty.

I can't even count the number of pets I've lost. We were caring for neglected cats many years ago because the lady (used very loosely) behind me didn't take care of them. So we ended up with ALOT of cats. Wonderful and special, and her loss was our gain. We also have always had a dog or two. Every time we have to put a pet to sleep I say, that's it, I can't do this anymore. When they're all gone no more pets. Liar liar pants on fire!! I can't live my life without pets so as heart wrenching as it is, I'll keep doing it because the joy they bring to our life almost balances out the pain of their loss. Right now I have one dog and 2 cats. Duke, our greyhound, is 11, Daisy is 18 and Mushy is the baby at 9 years old. They REALLY are waiting for us up there. That thought brings alot of comfort.
