I just got my pink ATG today at Michaels. I also got a package of the refills. I
actually got it loaded ---don't ask me how! But it works ---have not used it
on anything yet. But my question for those who have used it and bought
refills ---does it really pay to buy the acid free refills when using it on cards??
Or is the cheaper one at 5.99 just as good???

I expect the acid free would be as good if the card wasn't going to be kept for a long time. But I scrapbook as well, and I couldn't be bothered changing the tape over and I wouldn't bother with different tapes in two guns because I know the one I didn't want would always be the one I'd find first.

Thank you - that is a good point. I am not going to change tape all the time so
guess will use a Michaels coupon when especially, 50% off and buy the acid free at 9.99 regular. Probably worth it! Do sometimes do things other than cards and the
acid free would be better for that.

I buy the Tape Depot acid-free 1/4 inch refills. They come in a 12-pack for $23, so that's only $1.92/roll. They have free shipping over $50 and ship promptly.
The Tape Depot - Reverse Wound Transfer ATG-7502
On this page, set the top pulldown menu to 12-pack subroll, then you will see 12-pack prices in the bottom pulldown menu. Be sure to do that first, or you will be horrified by the case price! ;)
If you and a couple friends order together, you could get the free shipping.
It may sound funny, but having a 12-pack in the drawer at less than $2/roll makes me feel free to use as much of this stuff as I want! And the Tape Depot refills are really good - as good as the 3M in my opinion.

I'm going to have to check out where I can get tape in Aus. I've seen the Gold in a local office store prior to getting my gun, so it must be around.
Is the gold stickier? I have a transparency that wants to come off my page - mind you, I'd be pushing any adhesive to the limit with what I'm trying to do with it.

Score! Got my cute pink ATG today at Michaels with a 50% coupon (my local Michaels is typically 2 months behind the rest of the world). That makes THREE ATG's..two red ones (one has a broken cover, which is why I bought red #2) and the pink. I am going to keep one in my studio, one in the house, and one at school for my craft club.
As to the acid free tape--it's only important if YOU feel it is. I just make cards (no scrapbooking) so I don't feel acid-free is critical for me. I find the stickiness is the same in the acid free and the regular. For me, the tape from the Tape Depot is cheaper but not worth it in terms of the "frustration factor" and lower quality.

I got a Pink ATG fun yesterday, using my 50% off coupon, as well! I have only played with it a little while so far. Adhesives are just too expensive to go any other way! (In my humble opinion, that is!) LOL!

I'm not the OP re: the frustration level, but I have not been super impressed with the refills I got from The Tape Depot. Mine are definitely NOT as sticky as the Scotch refills it came with and loading it was a nightmare. My youngest son finally figured it out, but it drove me nuts for two days because the tape seemed to be on the wrong side of the paper backing. I miss the extra stickiness, since it held ribbon nice and tight on the reverse side of a layer....didn't have to add any extra adhesive with the Scotch/3M; do with The Tape Depot stuff.
I think I'll just bite the bullet and see about finding the cheapest 3M/Scotch refills when I'm out of The Tape Depot rolls.
I'd be interested to see if anyone else noticed a difference in 'stickiness' between the 3M/Scotch tape and the other brands.
Thanks!
Blessings,
Kat

I've been using tape rolls from The Tape Depot for months now, and I haven't had any problems. In fact, that's where I bought my ATG 50 for $25. I have had no issues with loading it or its stickiness. I know others have had problems, but I've been doing just fine; and you can't beat the price.

I found the Tape Depot tape to be less sticky and more prone to "gunking up" the tape roller--one of the rolls I had was so bad that I think that about 50% of it was unusable. Maybe I was just unlucky and got a poor "batch" of tape--I know lots of posters here on SCS that have had no problems and are very pleased with the Tape Depot tape. I buy my tape from Framing Supplies and split the shipping cost with another stamping friend.

I have been using tape from the Tape Depot for as long as I've been using my ATG, and have NEVER had any problems. On the contrary.. it is cheaper, acid free for no extra cost, smoother, less gunky and easier to roll than the 3M tape I have tried.
I think some people got a bad batch from the Tape Depot, that I'm sure the Tape Depot would rectify if notified. I have had bad batches of the 3M tape, so I think it can happen with any manufacturer.
In fact, the 3M tape that came with my pink ATG wasn't wound properly-- so it definitely does happen.

ATG Comparison
I just uploaded a video comparing the NEW Pink ATG, the Red ATG 714, and the Blue ATG 50 if anyone is interested. I hope it helps.

If you can't find it at Micheals ask an associate to type that number in their "gun" and that should show them where it is in the store! It is new and a lot of the people who work there won't have a clue about it....but anyone with a "gun" should be able to locate one for you....or at least show you where it is in the store.
You may even be able to ask them for a raincheck for it. Then when it comes in they will hold one for you and give you a call. |
Thank you for the UPC code number. We were in Montana last week (Billings)and I searched and searched for the Pink ATG. Michaels didn't seem to have it. I asked a clerk to check the UPC and sure enough they found one for me in the store and she also discovered another was on order! I used a 50% coupon so only cost me 19.99. Up here in Canada our Michaels said they are on order so using that UPC really helped!!!

I was glad to hear that someone else paid $19.99. I've been reading that some people got them for $16.99 at Michaels. I guess the prices vary at the Michaels stores depending on your state? I live in Texas. Just curious.

My Michael's initially had it for $34.99. Then they ran out of them and the new batch they have for sale is now $39.99. So that might explain the price difference.

Great Video! Thanks for sharing! I just got the pink ATG yesterday from Michael's and had a heck of a time loading the tape. This should make it easier!

Man, I guess the price does vary! I got mine with a 50% coupon (J's coupon that Mikes honored...) and it was $25. Retails for $49.99 here!

oh my goodness! came across this thread earlier today...and couldn't wait to drop by my Mike's to see if they had the Pink ATG! I had recently purchased the glue glider Pro (in pink) and have been very unhappy with the adhesive...not sticking to the paper when rolled out...cardstock not adhering well...so I was thrilled when I went and found the ATG! got it loaded and tried it out and BINGO! We have a WINNER!

Have bought 3M tape and tape from The Tape Depot. I've definitely noticed a difference between the two. The 3M is much better. Tape from The Tape Depot is not wrapped around the core properly; the tape tends to bend outward in a cone shape, so it does not unwind from the ATG as it should. The tape was shipped standing up in the box which caused it to warp more. As soon as I got it, I stored it flat in the box, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Also, it does tend to "gunk" up on whatever I try to adhere it to, or else it doesn't stick properly and ends up winding around the roll. I've never had a problem with the 3M tape.
I did find the pink ATG at my LSS for $26.00; the only difference I noticed is that the plastic cover which you lift to insert new rolls seems to be a harder plastic than my red 714 ATG. And it was very difficult to open - I was afraid I would break it; so it does seem to be a somewhat cheaper version of the original.

Aww, Linda-- I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the Tape Depot tape. I've been using it for years, and have never experienced any problems whatsoever with them. I find their tape to actually be LESS "gunky" than the 3M tape, and to stick so much better. In fact, the last time I used the 3M tape, I had all the problems you are having with the Tape Depot tape. I think we both must have gotten bad batches of tape--you the Tape Depot kind, and me the 3M!
