Hi Everyone.
What an impressive gallery of your wonderful layouts. I see everyone has done so well with both of the previous two masking tutorials. Here is number 3 and the last one of this series. It's a little bit different take on the out of bounds technique using masking.
Photoshop Elements does not have a masking option like it's big brother Photoshop B U T there is a work around! Yea, yippee.
Here is your new tutorial for Masking 103. Grab it HERE.
The tutorial is written in PSCS4 with directions for Photoshop Elements 6 in blue text. There are also screen shots in both Photoshop and Elements. If you have any questions, please let me know. This is a great group of digital scrappers and everyone is so helpful. It's a pleasure working with all of you.
PM me at MaggieMay.
Your Challenge is to:
Create a layout or card using the masking technique described in the above tutorial. Use it as a guide and be as creative as you like. Your page or card must have one element, photo, etc., that you use the technique.
Have a great time with this new challenge. I hope you learn some fun new things and have a creative and fun challenge. If you have any questions, please let me know or post in this thread.
So let's get ready to have fun, to share ideas and to inspire each other with out layouts!
To start the challenge off, here is a very simple layout that I did just for an example:
You can view all submissions for this challenge here:DGC058 Gallery
To add your page to this gallery, just add DGC058 to your keywords. Please also add SBC10SEP in the keywords. This makes it easier for us to search and find your layouts. Oh, and if you would, please take a minute to post a link on this thread so we wont miss seeing your work! Sometimes I have a hard time finding your layouts. If you want to send me a PM with a link to your layout, that would be great as well.
Have a great week! I look forward to seeing your layouts.
Oh, and one more thing -- don't forget to leave a little love for others when they leave love for you. Everyone likes to read comments about their work!![/font]------------------------------------------- SBC's Information Thread: Everything you need to know to participate!
The picture I used is 3 years old and I've always loved it, but I could never figure out what to do with it that would serve it justice. This technique was just the thing. Thanks a lot for teaching this!
Hey all you digi scrappers-- DigiscrapAddicts has some new designer challenge freebies. If you click on a photo, it will bring up the collection with links for downloading!
I'm off to the gallery to have a look at what you all have been up to! I apologize for not being here as much as I have been, but it looks like you have all been doing great with the tutorial.
As many of you know, I have been busy creating an on line crafting magazine. The first edition came out on September 15th and we've got such nice compliments from it. Next edition is due October 15th. If you didn't get the September edition, go here www.papersandpixels.com and click on the magazine cover to download a copy.
With all of this said, I am truly sorry to have to bow out of the hostess job for this challenge. I have enjoyed meeting all of you and watching you work through the tutorials. I wish my stay could have been longer, I have just run out of time to do all the things I so enjoy doing!
Laura, it's great to hear that your magazine was a hit--I enjoyed it and look forward to the next. I wish you all the success in the world with your new venture.
I so enjoyed your challenges and am really sorry to hear that you won't be able to host the digi challenges anymore! : I do know how easy it is to get too much on one's plate, though, and totally understand.
Are the challenges ending??? I have been learning so much and have so looked forward to keep up with my digiscrapping. Everyone's layouts are so cool and I know since school has started, I won't be able to tackle this new one for a bit, but I am excited to try the new take on the masking!! Thank you Laura for such wonderful tutorials!!!
I'm really sorry to see you leaving Laura. Good luck in your future endeavors. Hopefully you'll be able to scrap some with us even if you're not a hostess...there is a VSBN coming up soon!
Hello...I am trying to do this technique but am stuck on #11 where we are to select the image. Are we to be on the "base" layer to do this or the photo layer?
Also, I am on the base layer and every time I use the quick selection tool, as I go towards the top of the image, it selects the WHOLE picture...can't get it to stop doing that! Any suggestions? Here is the picture I am trying to select from (just DGS).
Many of you enjoy VSBN and have yet to take the leap into Hosting an event. With our scrapbookers numbers getting smaller, we need ALL of you to advertise the SCS VSBN on any other sites and forums you visit...PLEASE! In addition, we need a few more Hosts to develop and moderate VSBN Challenges. Be sure to check out the VSBN Forum for more information; you can always PM me with questions.
I hope you can play during the mini and/or the weekend...looking forward to hearing from you!

OK. Thanks to Marcia, I was able to figure out how to use the quick selection tool to choose just DGS from the picture but now I can't figure out why I don't have a transparent background when I hit the delete button...it's all black (probably cause I have the default colors B&W down in the corner selected) so now I am still stuck at #11 instructions...???

Wish I could help, but I haven't done this challenge yet! Maybe Candy can help!
Hey Terry, I sent you a PM. Pretty sure the problem is that you need to change the background layer to a raster layer. After you do that, delete and you should have a transparent background. Try that, hope it works but think it should.
Hi Terry,
That was my thought as well. Be sure you double click on your background layer, in the pop up box, just click ok. The very first layer you start with is automatically called the background. You will need to change this so that when you hit delete, you get a transparent background. If you have any troubles, do not hesitate to PM me, ok?
I can't find any info on how to do the raster layer in PSE7 and when I double click on the background layer, all I get is the options for Normal/Dissolve/Overlay/Soft Light/etc
I thought maybe simplify layer might be the same as Raster but that option in not available where I am at now. Since I already have the blacked out background, do I need to start over again and make the background layer a "raster" layer before picking out the image?
Well. Now here's an interesting tidbit. I used the Quick selection tool to select the entire figure in the "black background" layer and hit right click. In the options given, I chose layer from cut and it cut out the figure and placed it on layer above the black one and that new layer has the transparent background...go figure? I don't know what I'll do with it now cause it looks I could now use that on a page but I've got to go get DGS ready for bed so I'll have to wait until Saturday to play around with it some more!
Terry, sounds like you have what you want now. I would just delete the other layer now. Then I would save what I have so if I mess up anything else at least I still have the "figure" I want to use in my layout. HTH.
