Hello, I am hoping that some of my SCS friends can help me with a problem. This past weekend I tried to make Scrabble tile pendants. I followed a tutorial I found on the internet and first I sealed the images (which were printed on high quality photo paper on a really nice laser printer) with glossy mod podge. Once dry, I glued the cut out photo paper image to the wooden tile with Diamond Glaze and allowed to dry overnight. Then the next day I applied a coat of Diamond Glaze to the top of the tile - to coat the image and give a glossy look. Allow this coat to dry overnight and then apply a second coat of the Diamond Glaze.
I did not notice a problem at first, but today when I looked at the tiles again I noticed that I was able to peel up the image from the wooden tile. It almost seemed like the paper had two layers and the top layer with the image came off, leaving the bottom layer with the glue on top of the tile. I also noticed that I was able to make an indention in the Diamond Glaze with my fingernail and there were also smudges on the glossy top surface. Should the top surface of these pendants be hard and impenetrable or does it stay �soft�? I do not actually have the Diamond Glaze brand, but was using a similar product called Aleene�s Paper Glaze, which seemed to be the same thing, just another brand? I also have Glossy Accents so maybe that would work better and dry harder??? Maybe I should wait longer between the first and second coat of glaze?
Has anyone else encountered similar problems in making these pendants? I think one problem is that I applied too thick of a coating of the Diamond Glaze in both the first and second applications, but I was trying to make it thick so it would have a nice domed look like the ones I have seen on Etsy. Also, maybe I should try a different type of glue when gluing the image to the actual wooden tile so I can avoid the paper peeling off? What type of glue do you use to adhere the image to the tile? How do you get the nice dome when applying thin layers of glaze?
I am trying to make these necklaces for a craft show so I want them to be nice and not fall apart after people buy them! Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!
Cut out slightly smaller than tile. Apply drop of Glossy Accents to tile, apply image and slide around to make sure it's well adhered. Let dry. (Doesn't take long.)
Apply Glossy Accents around edge of the image then fill in center. Let dry undisturbed at least 12 hours.
I don't know if it will give as nice a surface as Diamond Glaze, but I like to do decoupage with Liquid Laminate by Beacon Chemical, I use it both for the glue and the glaze. It doesn't give a thick pooling effect but it is harder and shinier than most water-based coatings that you brush on. I've never had any decoupage work come apart when I've used this, and I use it on beads which get some wear and tear.
Thanks so much for the great advice! Sounds like part of the problem may be the Aleene's Paper Glaze. I will have to order CE or Diamond Glaze or try a few tiles with Glossy Accents or the Liquid Laminate. Thanks again!

Kate, I wonder if maybe the problem is using photo paper? Maybe it is made in layers, and that is causing the pendant to peel apart. Try using some cardstock.
PS I've never made these, so I actually shouldn't be giving advice.

photo paper IS a layered paper - and though I haven't made these I was thinking the same thing. I know I have been able to peel apart photo paper for other projects.
Thanks for the advice. Maybe the problem is partly the photo paper, although several tutorials I read, as well as the seller I bought the images from on Etsy all recommended printing the images on photo paper to make the pendants. I have made a few more using PVA glue to adhere the image to the wooden tile and then used Glossy Effects to cover the top and so far they look much better and are not peeling up. Hopefully this new process will work because I already have about 50 sheets printed on nice photo paper!

I was just going to say that I only use one coat of glossy accents on the top and it becomes hard. Just make sure it is all the way dry because I did get a finger print in one once! LOL
I just added a few more tile to my SCS gallery...they are still pending though.
My first batch of tiles I just bought a small batch of jewelry bails from Michael's with a 40% off coupon but then I got addicted! LOL So I ordered 100 of the larger bails from China (they are the bails on my newer tiles). I have used all of those too! YIKES (I have a problem) ;) So I recently found this etsy store. For the larger bails I am using the E-6000 glue but for smaller one I was just using the Tombow metal glue. I hope that helps
Has anyone tried the bubble sticker you just place on top of your tile? I bought them on ETSY but not exactly thrilled with them. I seem to get a bubble or slight fingerprint on side of sticker bubble. To explain, these are to replace using diamond glaze on top of image.

I use small, bc medium seem to big for little tile, but sometimes it is hard to get clasps thru the whole of a small bail. Truly, only ball chain fits easily bc of the thin clasp.

I sometimes use photo paper and haven't had a problem with them splitting/peeling. I cut out the image, use modge podge to stick it to the tile then use crystal effects on top, just one coat. I have made tons of these and I wear mine all the time.
I also use designer paper cut it out to size with a cut image on it and use the same process with the tile.

Etsy supplies, I use Sun and Moon crafts, the tiles and bails are cheap. But deside what type of chain/necklace you are going to use bc the small bails have a small opening. I use E6000 to attach the bails, works great. have fun, it is addicting but great for leftover scrap paper!
here's another shout out to Sun and Moon. She has the MOST AMAZING glaze ever!! I user it on my washer necklaces and she is just the best !!! Fast service too.

I got an old Scrabble game from a Thrift Store. Yesterday over my lunch hour I went to a Thrift Store and found a game called Trippples by Aladdin. (I never heard of that game) but in it were also tiles the same size as Scrabble squares. There were 65 tiles in it and I paid 99 cents for the game.
I used to use E6000 for the bails but I find a super glue works just as well and is less messy. I had to apply the E6000with a toothpick but I got the super glue witha very small tip and just place a drop, it dries instantly too.
I have a bazillion scrabble tiles from yard sales/thrift stores. I have everyone I know scoop them up when they see them.
I bought the mini ball chains from someone on etsy, I wouldn't recommend them. I have 100 and I cannot get the clasp on the balls it is all too small to work with so I think I will buy the larger bails and get the regular size ball chains.
Another tip from experience. I have always used a silver paint marker to color the sides of the tile (I just thought it looks more fininshed) but I put all my tiles in a zip lock to transport to the fair and the silver rubbed off on the face of the tiles :( I will not be doing that again, it won't rub off the CE so they are ruined.
You can also drill a hole and use a jump ring. I drill after the image is attached. I've used metal tape or double-sided sticky tape and used foiling or glitter to edge mine.
I would love to try drilling a hole, what size bit do you use since I have never used a drill in my life! Seriously! I know, I am a sad case!!
Re: Ball Chains, totally agree with above, they send you the chains with the clasps NOT attached and they are a BEAR to close and place on the chain. Do not buy tiny chains, they are useless, buy the medium size. You should be able to get the chain thru the bail and then attach the clasp on the med. chains.
I use a Dremel tool and a very small bit. There are a lot of drills available - even hand drills that rely on your power. I'd suggest going Harbor Freight or even Home Depot/Lowes and do some research.

I find my scrabble tiles at Thrift stores and garage sale but haven't had much luck lately. EEK! It's like an addiction, I don't know what I will do when I run out. I have my MIL looking for me too.
In my photos...the three that are pictured together are Bails from Michael's. The individual tiles are bails I ordered from China but I just ran out of those. My bails from etsy came in the mail yesterday and I haven't tried them out yet but I ordered the medium size
I think someone asked about graphics as well. I use DP and whatever small stickers, bling, etc I can find that fits and looks good. I use a lot of E.A.D Designs Stickerz as well.
I don't know if this will help but I make pendants using photo paper. First I seal the entire photo or picture or art work with a thin layer of mod podge glue. I let this dry solid and then I raise the tile or pendant up on a couple of stacked dimes (so up off of the wax paper I set it on to protect my surface) then I pour a thin layer of resin on it (2 part resin I bought at home depot) Cover with plastic bowl or shoe box or something to keep dust in the air from falling on it while drying. Works beautiful. Marge

I use mod podge matte to seal my paper and then I use mod podge dimensional majic to coat my pendant. I have heard that Diamond Glaze ruins if it gets wet by rain, water, etc. I tested my dry pendant with water and the water did not affect the coating at all. But a problem I'm having is when it does dry, there is a slight indention in the middle of the pendant. Does anyone ever have that problem?
