Title ~ Summertime Foods We Love!

Let`s face it. Food is associated with so many celebrations including summertime! From ice cream trucks making the rounds to the picnics we held in our backyards.
So my challenge to you is to make a CAS card (no more than 2 layers, please) showing some food related thing that reminds you of summer and tell us why.
Don`t have any food related stamps? Think outside the box on this one! Eating popcorn watching a movie, barbeques, hot dogs and hamburgers, cotton candy, popsicles....you get the idea! Could be from your childhood or something you do now with your own children or grandchildren! Idea...picking fruit or vegetables, canning, etc. S`mores at the beach, toasting marshmallows,recipe cards. And please above all...have fun!
So what may you ask is a honey of a summer have to do with foods? Well I spent many a weekend at my grandparents house. I was always fascinated with my grandfather and his beehives! The bees never stung him and he could be covered with them! Not only did we have fresh honey and comb but the bees were used to pollinate crops ( a practice you can see here in the fields of NC ) which we enjoyed all summer! Everything from all the berries to crunchy and juicy veggies. Some of the best days of my life!

One of my favorite parts about summer are those breezy sort of days when you can have the windows open and the curtains fluttering. I love fresh air, actually am not a fan of air conditioning at ALL and have constant battles with family members who turn it on while I walk by to turn it off!
My challenge is to create a card that has a 'window' as either as a style element or to form a focal point for your main image. It can be as simple as a cutout or punched shape on your front panel with the image or sentiment on the inside, or you can create a shadowbox card, as is shown in this tutorial here: //www.splitcoaststampers.com/ga...0&ppuser=33693.
A normal shadowbox card would have 1/2" indentations on either side, I made my shadowbox vertical instead of horizontal because it fit the images better, and only put a 1/4" fold on the sides. Still stands up and will fit into a standard sized A2 envelope for mailing.

I was really inspired by the theme �Summertime in the Land that I Love�. It made me think of all the trips we took when I was a kid. My dad always wanted to see the natural beauty of the United States and all the open spaces. I think we visited just about every national in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona.
So, I was thinking of all the beautiful scenes I was lucky enough to see as a kid and it reminded me of this great background technique called wax paper Cuttlebug resist. You can find a link to it here.
Now I know the last thing you want to do in the summertime is get out that iron. But trust me! The results are worth it! And who knows, when you are done with the VSN challenges, you might even be tempted to use that iron on a few clothes that really need it!
Your challenge is to make a card using this technique, wax paper Cuttlebug resist, to create a beautiful background for your card. Don�t worry if you don�t have a Cuttlebug machine. Any embossing folder will work.

Title: Lets Go Camping!

When I think of Summertime, my favorite memories are of going camping and fishing with my Dad. Now, we never caught very much, but we had a lot of fun doing it! We also camped in all sorts of environments, from the woods in Kentucky, to the canyons in Utah, to the Nevada Desert! Luckily, I married a man who also likes to camp, so this is one activity that we can do together. There's nothing like being trapped in the woods to stimulate some real conversation! LOL
My challenge to you is to make a card inspired by camping. Here's some ideas to get you started:
Nature - think of all the things you see out in the woods (or desert!) Masculine colors - you rarely see a pink tent in the woods! ;) Twine- think tent lines, fishing line, clothes lines Hardware - tent stakes and zippers, fishhooks and battered frying pans Distressing - everything gets dirty when you camp, but that's half the fun when you're a kid!
Now, is anybody else in the mood for S'mores?? :razz:

Ooooooo eeeeeeee, it has been a HOT summer! How do you cool down? We all love to cool off by playing in water in the summer, whether it is jumping into the pool, lake or river, throwing water balloons, water fights with squirt guns or just sitting under a mister and drinking some cool lemonade.
My challenge is to use water in some way when creating your card.Here are a few ideas: watercolor with markers, reinkers, watercolor crayons or watercolor pencils, mist your inked stamp before stamping, wet and crumple your cardstock, wet paper water coloring, wet watercolor crayons, wrinkle-free distress, shimmering watercolor crayons, wet a sponge and dip in your ink and sponge the edges of your card, moisten mulberry paper and tear it, watercolor wash, etc. Several of these techniques are found in the Resources section if you need some help. A water image does not count! I want you to use water in some other way to create your card.

It seems like every summer growing up included at least one trip to the beach. I always loved beach combing the beach for all the lovely treasures the tide would bring in. Collecting shells was a fun pastime, and it reminded me of that silly little tongue twister, "Sally sells seashells, down by the seashore." So as you are repeating this to yourself 5 times, your challenge is to run around your stamp room and look for a shell stamp set, or a die cut shell, or even a real shell or a charm that can be used on your card. If you don't have something like that, there is always, shell macaroni, or you might even have a stamp of an animal that lives in a shell like a turtle or crab.
Use your imagination and lets see what your creative tides bring in.

Title: O beautiful...

When I heard the theme for this VSN, I started singing. I can't help it. Music has always been a part of my life and I was taken back to the patriotic songs I was taught in my childhood and the big 4th of July celebrations where they were sung. Hot, lazy days filled with love of country, love of family, love of God, and love of life.
Written originally as a poem by Katharine Lee Bates in 1895, and set to music composed in 1892 by Samual Ward for a 1600's hymn, America the Beautiful was was first published in the combined form we know today in 1910. The first stanza is the most widely known, not counting the chorus, and it is what my challenge is based upon.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
My challenge for you is to make a card using the colours AMBER and PURPLE. You may use small amounts of white and one other neutral (such as black ink for line image stamping), but please make amber and purple your main colours.
If you'd really like to go for it, the last verse contains the line "Thine alabaster cities gleam" - which calls to mind the translucency of vellum, but this is not completely necessary. That's just for those who feel like an additional challenge.

When I was young...Okay, back in the EARLY 1970's, I spent my summers in the rural areas of northern Maryland on my grandmother's farm. I worked the farm, as a farm hand. There were 5 FULL time farm hands who pretty much made SURE I had plenty to do. Grandma had over 300 heads of cattle, 300 milk cows, a BIG MEAN BULL, horses, chickens and MANY farm cats. She also had corn, squash and blueberries in her VAST fields.
My chores were to get up at 4AM, help milk cows, (it was a REAL dairy farm with milking machines, and serilization machines, not to mention the fact that those old girls were treated like royalty!) feed and water the steers, muck out the barn and get the chicken eggs...All this BEFORE breakfast.
By midmorning, I had finished any odd jobs that I was assigned, and had a few hours to help fix lunch for the men. After lunch, I was given 2 hours of free time that I spent trying to catch the wild kittens. Then, I helped in the "kitchen's garden" by pulling weeds, picking vegies, etc. Of course, my grandma then had me help her in the kitchen making dinner for the family. After dinner, I went out to get the cows into the barn.
You know what? I LOVED my summers! I was always busy, slept through the night and felt like I had done something with my life. I learned a lot about responsiblity while working that farm every summer from third grade through my junior year of high school. I wish I could have sent my children to work that farm, like I did.
My challenge to you is to use anything FARM, or rural area related on a card. That means, fruits, vegies, animals, garden, ANYTHING related to farm or rural life.

Summertime in the USA makes me think of all of the people outside enjoying sports and games...whether it be at the local T-ball or soccer park or at a stadium. I have had the pleasure of going to Yankees Stadium when I was little, Fenway Park to see the Boston Red Sox when I was in high school, and also to Shea Stadium to see the Mets when I was in college. The electric atmosphere, vendors, and crowds are almost more exciting than the games! But my favorite part is listening to the "Star-Spangled Banner", and hearing the crowd ROAR after the last line is sung..."and the home of the BRAVE!"
So my challenge to you is to create a card incorporating the following list of supplies, and you will notice that they spell out "BRAVE"! Please include at least 1 of each of these on your project (but then after you can add other colors and embellies, too, if you'd like):

When I think of summertime, I think of vacations, and vacations we have taken in the past, One of my favorites was watching the Bald Eagles soaring in Alaska. However, soaring could also be parasailing at the beach, soaring in a plane on your way to your vacation spot....... Soaring in your mind just to be going on vacation. So my challenge is to make a card showing how you "soar" for your vacation. It could be showing your special vacation spot (like Alaska is for DH & me), a kite that your kids are flying on the beach, a bird from a bird watching trip, etc etc. So come soar with us with this unique challenge.

I am from the Jersey Shore and summertime to me is all about the beach, the ocean, and the Boardwalk. The colorful umbrellas, laughing children, the babies experiencing the ocean waves for the first time, the smell of suntan lotion, the treats of ice cream, soft pretzels, pizza or a cheese steak. There is nothing like a day on the beach!
I think one of the things that I miss the most being so far from home is the smell of the salt air. My challenge for you today is to make a card or project using the Salted Background technique.

When I think of summertime I think of MOVING (which I did this year) and VACATION.
When you move or go on a vacation - if you're like me - you need a LIST! A to-do LIST to get done before you leave, and a LIST of things to pack. Here's a LIST of things you'll need to remember when making your project for this challenge...
- use at least one texture (crumpling, ripping, crimping, embossing, textured paper, etc)
- use only one embellishment

Ah, summertime. I love warm sunshine. But I live on the coast very close to the ocean and when it is hot inland, we often have fog or clouds. Today is such a day. It is overcast and in the low sixties here at my house! So I have no aversion to using a heat tool tonight! I hope you'll join me!

This song reminds me of a lazy summer afternoon and doing some good old fashion bicycle riding. Think back to the movie Wedding Crashers when Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams riding their bikes! Inspiration for my challenge came from this...
In celebration of our festivities..."Summertime in the Land that I Love"...my challenge to you is to pick your favorite summertime song and use it to make your card. There is one teeny tiny thing...to make your card you need to use one of the Sketch AND Color Challenge from SCS!!! BUT with a little twist...you must use the same number for the sketch and color challenge! So if you pick sketch # 175 then you use the same one for your color challenge. Easy peasy???

One of the absolute delights and pleasures on a hot summer's day - a long, tall drink!!!! My challenge for you tonight - create a Cup Card!! (Click on the words to go to the easy to follow tutorial!!)
Think about your most enjoyable drink during summer - a Long Island Iced Tea, Homemade Lemonade ............... or maybe something more exotic, ahem, or even more "adult"!!!!! Whatever you fancy, take the opportunity to recreate something to cool you down after a long hot day of stamping!!!!
