Default How much would you pay for a single stamp?

This is the first time I have posted a question like this and I really keen to see what other SCS'ers think of this!

I have been watching a stamp on a well known auction site and could'nt believe my eyes when I saw how much it sold for! See link below

PENNY BLACK Rubber Stamp CHRISTMAS CAROLING MICE #623 on eBay (end time 24-Aug-10 04:35:06 BST)

Now I am as addicted to buying stash as the next crafter but how desperate would you have to be to pay this much?

As much as I fell in love with an image I would could never justify paying this amount for a single stamp! I bet the seller could'nt believe their luck!

So it got me thinking.....What is the most you have paid or be willing to pay for a single stamp?

Hi Leslie!

To quote Meatloaf...."You took the words right out of my mouth!" I have just done an order with Dick today for 3 of the new 2010 Halloween PB's and am counting the days til they get here! I think what suprised me the most was the fact that the winning bidder was not a newbie to the auction site.

I know newcomers get carried away but you would think that the long standing member would have wised up! Stamps are a bit like buses, miss one and if you wait long enough another will turn up!

Hi Larue!
I'm glad you noticed that too! I think that's one of the reasons I am amazed!

Would'nt it be fantastic if you got that amount for each and every unwanted stamp? Imagine the stash you could buy with that sort of profit!

I am not sure how much I would pay for a stamp I really really want, but I can't believe I would pay $55 for one used stamp!

It's not quite the same thing, but I will admit that I once spent $20 on a retired embossing folder. Probably not the smartest thing I've ever done

I've paid around $50 for a stamp, but it's an XL Stamps Happen one that was retired a loooong time ago, and it's extremely rare. I don't make it a habit of paying that much for one stamp, but I knew how rare it was and would likely not see another one again for a long time.

I believe that they are talking about this website right here - Dick is the owner of the site (at least that's what I could gather ;))

For me it would depend on the size of the stamp, what I wanted it for & how badly I wanted.
For a rare, very-hard-to-find large stamp something along the size of a SU! background stamp, I might be willing to pay in the $30 range, but I can't imagine going much higher than that.

WOW! If I were the seller of that stamp I would be doing such a happy dance!!

I can't believe anyone would pay $55 for that!! It's cute, but geez....especially when it's still available for MUCH less elsewhere!!!

To answer the question...I guess if it were a large stamp; like SU background stamp size and I really, REALLY wanted it I'd go as high as $20 but that would be such a rare exception. It kills me to pay $10 or higher for a single stamp no matter the size.

Sometimes the prices people bid to on ebay are crazy! The Hanglar & Stanglar stamps regularly sell for over 20 each, and while they are lovely, there is no way they are worth some of the prices they reach, particularly since there is now so much choice out there for cute character stamps.

Such a shame the bidders on this PB stamp obviously didn't know about PBStamps, that $50 would have gone much further. LOL!

I would never pay $55 for ONE stamp - I couldn't justify it. Not when you can get this same stamp at PB Stamps for $10 + postage. Guess some people get caught up in the emotion of bidding esp. when they really, really want the stamp. I am stunned at how much some PSX stamps go for (whether Auction or just the Buy it Now price! Maybe some people don't have the time to shop around - maybe they only buy off EBay or other Auction sites(?) - and don't know where else to buy. You can sure buy a whole lot of great stamps for $55 that's for sure!

Thanks for the link! If that poor ebayer were to see this, I bet she'd have a serious case of buyer's remorse!

There is something messed up in that auction. If you check out the bidding history, the dates and the amounts are fishy.

Unbelieveable!

I think the most I've ever spent on a stamp was $15. I just can't see spending that much on stamps, no matter how much I like them.

Moosekrazy....you got me curious so I checked out the bids. If you check out the bids just from the "18 bids" link, it will look weird. You have to also click on "show automatic bids".

From what I can tell the winner jumped in on Aug. 20th with a VERY HIGH maximum bid. After that it appears the bidder identified as "i***6" continued to try bids at dollar increments and each time was notified that she was already outbid because Ebay automatically bid .50 cents higher for the person who put in that high maximum.

By putting in such a high maximum amount as a bidder you don't have to worry about monitoring the auction everyday. But I've learned to never put in such a high maximum unless I am really willing to pay it.

I can't believe the winner of this stamp would want it so badly that she ( or he ) would set up such a high maximum to begin with! If nobody had tried to keep bidding the winner might have gotten it for much less. Ebay will only auto bid for you the least amount possible ( up to your max ) to keep you top bidder if indeed your maximum is the highest on record for that auction.

The winner could be a shill bidder, too -- a friend of the seller or something like that. I've bid on things before and entered what I thought would be a relatively high maximum bid only to be outbid. As soon as the auction is over, however, I've received a note from the seller saying the winning bid "fell through" and if I want the item, I can pay my max bid price. It's happened too many times, though, for me to go for it.

I had my eye on a stamp from Ebay once and just had to have it. It was a retired stamp of a country cottage with a picket fenced in garden, from PSX, I believe. It was so cute that not just me but everyone and their mother wanted it too! The start bid was $10 and quickly grew out of hand. I stopped my bidding at $20. The final price was $63 + $5.00 shipping!! EEK!! No Thank You!!! If I had bought that, my husband would have gone through the roof ...And so would I at the silliness of spending that much on ONE item/stamp! But we all have our weaknesses at some point

I'll try to think of a time where I spent way too much on one item..hmmm. I get bavk to you on it...

There is no way i would pay that much for a stamp no matter how much I've wanted it. I think a lot of people on E-bay care more about winning the item than the item itself.

Last year I paid $20 for the retired Haiku bunny stamp that was popular right before I started stamping. I still haven't used it yet but I will and don't regret buying it at all.

I've been watching several PSX Halloween stamps in the last week or so and a few have gone for $50 or more. They are really great images but I can get several not-as-great images for that $50!

PSX G-2099 HALLOWEEN SKELETON IN CHAIR RUBBER STAMP! - eBay (item 260653216483 end time Aug-24-10 14:57:25 PDT)

Rare PSX Scary Scarecrow Halloween Rubber Stamp Fall - eBay (item 140441118599 end time Aug-22-10 19:25:46 PDT)

I really wanted this one too but even $22 is too much during back-to-school fees weeks.

Even if I LOVED a single stamp, I would not pay more than a couple of dollars over it's original price .
