This question is for non demonstrators, I think, since demonstrators need to concentrate on current colors.
Now I have so many SU colors of ink, CS, and markers. How are you organizing your storage?
A) current colors one place and retired colors separate
B) by color, for example all blues retired and current together
C) roughly by category: brights, subtles, etc. - retired and current mixed
D) other
Thanks. I want to keep using the retired colors as long as they last and not lose track of them so I can use them up.
I am currently trying to decide how to deal with this issue. I pulled all the retired colors out of my storage systems; paper, ink pads and markers. I rearranged the remaining colors into the new color groups leaving blank spots for colors I did not have.
The problem is I did not get rid of all the colors that retired. I decided to bunch all the paper I kept at the back of one of my large plastic containers still in their individual hanging file folders with the color name on them. But I have three containers and it's hard to remember which one I decided to put the retired colors into. The ink pads have no home and just sit in a pile on the floor in front of one of my drawer units. The markers were floating around on my desktop or on top of my drawer units then I just gave up and popped them back into the Marvelous Markers case where they used to be.
This is not a great solution and I may have to consider abandoning the color family division SU sets up and just reorganize everything by colors. All the blues together etc...
I don't intend on getting EVERY color so if I keep it in the SU divisions I will always have "blank spots" in my ink pad storage and marker case. I'd love to have the new insert for the marker case but the only way to get that is to buy the "kit" SU offers which contain markers of colors I have no interest in plus they leave out one I really want...Rich Razzleberry I think.
I'll be following this thread to see what others have decided.
I'm a "B" gal too. I've never stored my inks/CS, etc. by color families, nor have I separated retired stuff from current. I want to be able to compare side=by=side all my blues, pinks, purples, reds, etc.
Probably won't be getting many of the new S/U colors any time soon (finances), so it will be a while before I have to worry about how to integrate the new colors from the old. In the past I haven't really cared, so the only issue will probably be 'where do I put all this stuff?' =)

I organize mine by B, color. If I'm looking for a Pink, I want to see all shades then decide by looking at all the shades I have...much easier for ME that way.
Thanks ladies. I am glad I started this thread. By color sounds good to me. I think the markers will be harder because it is difficult to distinguish which pink/red (or whatever color you are looking for) is which just by the cap.
I use option B (and I'm a demo-mostly hobby). I just mark the end of my retired inkpads with a red sticker dot so I can tell what is current at a glance. I also marked my tabs of my cardstock files. My inkpad holder is one that holds the marker beside the inkpad, so that helps with those.
Oh my goodness...I stick out like a sore thumb...I have all the current colors in a vertical file cabinet ALPHABETICALLY!.....I took out the retired packages and I have them organized in a dresser with all the color families seperated within the drawers..I dont like them out in the light. I have like 3 or 4 drawers FULL of the retired colors I ordered extra of and a two drawer file cabinet full too. I should be good for a while...

Even though they've changed it up over the years I'm married to the 5 categories (SS, BB, EE, RR, and Neutrals).
I also have mine like this. It works best for me. I have the paper I buy for other outlest mixed in to but it helps me to think in the different categories when I'm grabbing cs for a project.
I have every color of SU cardstock/ink/markers that they have ever made. I organize everything by color - so all the blues together, all the greens together, etc. I do write a small "R" on the file folder labels (how I store my cardstock) and on the ink pad index I have to indicate which ones are retired. Not that that really matters since I'm not a demo, but it's a quick reference to remind me which ones I can't re-order.
I'm a hobby demo who is in the process of re-organizing paper (I still need to figure out a system for ink). I'm keeping current and retired together, arranged alphabetically in hanging file folders.
I'm not a demo and I'm not SU! only - but SU! is my fav c/s. I keep retired separate from current in both paper and inks.
I keep the color families together - I used to have a separate file folder for each color organized by color family - but it was across the room from my workspace and truthfully it was a pain - so now I have some of those stacking cubes and I have 2 color families per cube for current and probably 2 for retired as well. Once I get in my order of more paper I may have to shift it around a bit but this seems to be working well for me.

PS I keep the scraps in a big bin- one for current and a smaller bin for retired. I found I never got around to filing the scraps - not sure how this will work out in the long run
My paper is roughly by family, with retired sets at the end (I was a demo and habits die hard), but my inkpads are alphabetical, current and retired together. DSP is wherevery I have thrown it.
I just went through this dilemma last week...what to do, what to do? I have no plans to get rid of the retired colors and will probably continue to acquire the "in-colors" (and other newly introduced colors). So I finally decided to change to ROYGBIV order. It looks nice on the shelf and I don't have to know a color family to find a color.
I just organize by colour. I've punched out a 2 1/2 square of each of the new SU colours, punched a hole in each, and put clip through it. Organized it by colour -and wrote the names on each. Works way better than the SU! colour coach - because the colours are true. Having that colour swatch makes it so much easier to choose colours for me.
Option A. I have two color caddies - one with classic, one with craft, separated into families and alphabetized. (Yes, very few pads now with the color change, but I'm working on it!) I have a plastic bin with retired craft pads and one with classic pads. I have my retired markers in an old tin - one that came with a punch bundle many years ago. My retired 12 x 12 cardstock is in a hanging folder box from Office Depot. I have two metal hanging folder carts for 12 x 12 paper for my current 12 x 12 cardstock and for my DSP (which is organized by year of release). My retired 8.5 x 11 is in the back of the drawers with my current 8.5 x 11 cardstock.
Deborah, I was wondering about the color coach. It never occurred to me that the colors might not be true on the color coach. I will make my own with scraps as you did!!!
Just want to jump in and say I saw a Color Coach live and in person at my demo's house and was SHOCKED at how "off" some of the colors are! The Rich Razzleberry comes to mind; it is very dull on the coach. You would never know what the color really looked like unless you saw the paper. That is one tool I WON'T be buying. Disappointing.
I am a mostly hobby demo so I kept my retired colors that I still love and use. It took me awhile to decide how to re-group ( I used to do it in color families) but I decided to go with Option B...by color.... for same reasons as others. It's nice to see all your blues when you want a blue, etc. I have 2 color caddies and I've got 1 filled and the other 1 has some space yet for new In Colors in future years.
Like everyone else, I want to use up my SU items paid for and loved. I just spent an hour rearranging the new color marker kit into my old marker box. Then I had a whole handfull of leftover markers; shocked, and I didn't like one bit.... So, back to the drawing board and so far I've arranged the ink pad, marker, and re-inker together in one slot by 1st color group (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Neutrals) then by alpha. (Purchased a wooden holder, but it doesn't hold all three items side by side now) I've got the papers arranged by color groups and alpha in a standing file. Still not sure I like it... Suggestions?
I had planned to arrange my by color from light to dark. I also plan to make my own "color coach" in a ring with the colors arranged in in the same order as my file. The inks, markers, and reinkers do present the problem. Where do you get an ink storage thing with a spot for markers and reinkers on top? I think I saw those once upon a time in a thread on SC.

I alphabetize mine too! My ink pads are in a wall unit and my paper in cubes in the closet. Works for me. I keep the retired ink pads in the unit until I use up all the paper, then take them to school to work with my kiddos.

I have two three-drawer sterlite plastic units that hold ink and sponges (dedicated to each ink color). These drawers are organized by current SU color families, with the remaining two drawers for retired colors and other inks (like Versamark and Distress inks). My plain cardstock is organized in hanging file folders, again grouped mainly by current SU color family. Hanging files for retired colors are in the back. I buy cardstock from several locations, though, so I put the cardstock in whatever folder is the closest match to an SU color. I'm not a demo, but I love the new color combos with the reorganization, so looking at my ink drawers organized in the new families gives me a good place to start with color ideas.
Great thread! It's neat to see how everyone is organizing just a bit differently.
I go for option B for cardstock, but without mixing my favorite brands. I have a drawer for SU, another one for Bazzil and another one where I put all the rest. Each drawer being then organised by color. And I made myself a kind of color swatch with all the cardstock I have (or had) for each drawer. Then when I'm looking for a red I just take my samples and try the different reds and can easily choose and locate the one I need. Hope it makes sense.
As to the inkpads, I haven't got enough yet to organise them by colours so I use option C for SU inkpads put in one big box and D for other brands which are all in one small box.
I have all of my card stock and inks in color families. Since I'm not going to stop using something just because it's retired, current products are in front followed by retired in each family.
I used to keep mine in the color families like in the catalog, but now the color families are much different. So now I keep mine in option B, by colors.

I keep mine by color in rainbow order. It's just easier for me to look in one place for all the reds, oranges etc I have. My classic stamp pads organized this way too.
you state you may not be getting many of the newer colors. Since I am retired; I wanted some of ther new colors to play around with the color combination challenges, here each Tuesday- so thank you SU, they have a starter collection package of all new 12 colors, but not in-colors, for $6.95 on page 165 without having to buy a large package of each color cardstock.....lovin that they did that.

I am not a demo, but am finding that it may be better organizing, sticking to one
company of colors. I like stampin up most, because of the color challenges on this site, for that reason I haven't gotten into much other color cardstock, but after reading this;
I'm wondering how I would organize that many different color cardstocks, so maybe it is best to stay with one company just for organization purposes. less confusion

I have my CS in hanging files arranged by B - colour. With the name of the paper. I too don't really care if they are 'in' colours or not. I punched out a small square of each and added it to the tab in the hanging file. I have also since put a black dot on the files that have been discountinued.

I'm not a SU! demo, though I was once upon a time. Two days ago I started to re organize my colours according to the new SU! set up. Why?? Basically because I'm disorganized and somewhat lazy.
Disorganized - Never in my lifetime will I be able to organize a group of 40+ colours in an orderly, consistant fashion. SU! does all that for me. Once I become fanmiliar with how the new colours are set out, I'll be able to visualize where each colour sits in the list, as organized by SU!
Lazy - I clean up my paper scraps from under my paper cutter infrequently.:oops: When I do, I spend about half an hour sorting all the bits back into their corresponding colour slot in my folders. One colour, one slot - I even had a slot for the colours I didn't have. Since I know where each colour sits in its familiy it's a relatively quick process that requires little decison making. I store my full sheets separate from my scrap folders.
Up until now I've kept all my retired stuff from previous years, but I hardly ever use it. And when I do, I get a bit stuck on where to put the scraps, since I can't visualise where it goes. So then I avoid using it altogether.
On a personal, preference level there is nothing wrong with the retired colours, in fact, I like a lot of them. I just don't know how I'd organise them in a recognisable way for me. And I like how there are now four groups with fewer colours. That means there's less to organise now.
I have split out retired and current but I keep everything in color families. I think because that was how I was introduced to the Stampin' Up! colors that is what's easiest for me to think of. I'm still getting used to some of the colors that moved around (like Old Olive is now a bright) but since I know most of them, it is fast for me to find what I'm looking for. Plus, when grouped by family, I just think they look pretty on my shelf.
