SU black ink looks purple

Any image that I stamp w/my SU black ink has a purple look. Even when I sponge the edge of card stock the black ink looks purple. Could my ink pad be too old and I need a new one? Anyone else having this problem? Thanks.

It is not an uncommon problem, they had some trouble with their black ink formula for a while...I *think* they have it figured out now. Give your demo a call and she can help you out, maybe get you a replacement!

Does the SU basic black look purple?...yes it does. You might try the Stazon Jet Black that you can get from SU. It's permanent and quick drying.

But my favorite 'go to' black ink pad is Memento Tuxedo Black. It's VERY black and will clean up with a baby wipe.

I'm with Leisa...I use Memento Tuxedo Black most of the time (it works best for Copic coloring) or Versafine Onyx Black for all my black stamping!

Honestly, I am a 100% SU girl as far as colored ink is concerned--except for black. It's purplishy (is that a word?). Go with another company for black--I use Stazon and Memento, but there are lots of other good ones.

Just have to say that mine is black. Really black, not purplish at all. I think it just depends on the pad you get! I tend to use staz on most of the time anyway because I color a lot and the SU black smears easily and takes forever and a day to dry:-) Seriously though call your demo and see if she can get you a replacement! AND SU sells staz on so it's a SU product:-)

Do any of you have a problem with the SU black staining your stamps? I was doing index inserts for my unmounted cd storage and tried black for one cd. Holy cow! Each stamp in that case is now stained and the images all stamped purple... I scrubbed and scrubbed the stamps to no avail and immediately switched colors for my index inserts. I thought maybe it was the age of the stamp pads, but they're all the same age and none of the others stain my stamps. I'm going to try to scrub them with the stayzon cleaner, but I'm afraid it may be too late for that set. :(

I quit using SU black classic ink years ago because of the purple color. Even my grand daughter (at age 6) did not like the purple color of the ink pad. I do not know if they ever fixed the problem as I have been using momento black since that time and have never had problems.

Any black I have used seems to discolor my stamps a little, especially staz on (and I can NOT get WHITE staz on off mine at all!). Some discoloring is ok, won't affect anything, just makes them not look as pretty. It just shows which stamps are well loved:-)

I just had two customers replace their lovingly used stampin up black ink pads with new ones. They are both happy with the new black ink formula used on them. I've had mine two years now and have not had a problem with it. Good luck!

Every SU black pad that I have used is purple. I even used it to do the shaving cream technique and it was totally purple.
I mostly use black StazOn.

I love SU ink but don't use, nor do I ever recommend their black. Agree with others above, Memento Tuxedo Black is the way to go!

Do you think they really did change the formula or was I just lucky? I admit being a little skeptical when two customers who had older purplish black pads wanted to update. I was pleasantly surprised to find both of them happy. Coincidence? I really don't know but I'm happy they are happy!

Mine is also very black. I tested it side by side with Stazon and I can not bet the difference.

I haven't used my SU black ink pad in years because of the purple issue. I use my black stazon for all of my black stamping.

I replaced my old SU black pad last year and it's black-black. I also replaced my reinker as the old one was purplish. Now that I have my new black pad I use it on a regular basis.

As for staining stamps, I don't mind that my stamps are stained. In fact, on clear stamps I stamp them with stazon and let them dry so I can see the image when selecting a stamp.

Stained stamps mean that I love them and use them. I can easily tell what I don't use because they are pristine.

Interestingly, I used my SU black marker last night and it was a pleasing jet black like it should be. I originally thought perhaps the age of my ink pads and markers maybe had something to do with it. They are all over 7 years old and haven't ever been re-inked. (Nor were they stored as carefully as they should have been during my 5-year stamping break. Completely my fault for that.) But all the other colors are okay - sure, I'll eventually replace a majority of them with newer ink pads, but not for quite a while. Lucky for me, they're all still juicy - amazing!

Glad to hear the new pads seem to be better. Maybe I'll take the plunge and replace my black one.

Use staz-on cleaner or simple green to clean the stains.HTH;)

This was my problem, which is why I started this thread. I am using my SU black for index sheets. Some of the images look purple. I always have to use Staz-on cleaner to get the black ink off my stamps. The cloth turns purple. I don't know if this means anything, but here are the numbers on the back of my ink pad: Lot#96-128; 05252. Could we all have black ink pads from a bad batch? :(

You don't have to buy a new pad. Just rinse the old one out, let it dry then purchase a new reinker. Should work like a champ. I have two basic Black ink pads. One is MUCH older (right when the new style pad came out) and the other I got a couple of years after that. The older one is purple-ish. The newer one works great.

That being said, I reach for my Staz-On ink if I'm doing ANY watercoloring. I do loves me some Staz-On!

My lot number is 96-118; 01012. Like I said, it's at least 7 years old, too...

My first black on was purplish but my second one was nice and black. I think they may have changed the formula or did I luck out?

They changed the formula; I don't know when it changed but I bought a new ink pad in the spring of last year and it is black black.

I took Willstampforfood/Wendy's tip yesterday and rinsed out my classic black ink pad. Luckily I did it in my stainless steel kitchen sink, because it was solid purple after just a couple minutes of letting the faucet run over the ink pad! I mean PURPLE! LOL I was worried that I'd have some 'splaining to do to DH, but was able to scrub all the purple out of the sink with a scrubbing sponge after I was through. I managed to figure out half-way through rinsing how to remove the cover from the stamp pad, too, which helped a bit. The next challenge was my Willy Wonka "You're turning violet, Violet!" fingers - discovered my Clorox bleach spray had no trouble turning my violet fingers back to human color! (Also carefully used the Clorox spray to clean up the stamp pad case a bit, too, since it was mostly violet when all was said and done, too.)

Oh yeah...if you're going to rinse it out, make sure you have bleach handy for clean up because it's going to make everything it touches purple.

I'm all SU ink except for Stazon. My black is purple, purple, purple and seems to get more so as time goes on. I don't use black a lot, but maybe I should try a new SU black. I always thought I'd get a different brand.

I discarded my SU black years ago...never stamped clearly, anyway. Stazon takes care of the coverage and color issue, but I couldn't stand the smell and the residual staining was more than I could bear (but then again, I'm borderline OCD!! ;)). I used Memento Tuxedo black for a year or two, but once I bought my Versafine Onyx black, I haven't looked back.

LOVE THAT STUFF! Juicy enough to provide awesome coverage, but perfect for fine details. I NEVER have to restamp an image when I use my Versafine. It's such a pleasure this year to work on Halloween cards, because I feel like I'm finally getting truly BLACK images.

And, after it dries a little (it isn't quite as quick to dry as S/U cuz it's a pigment ink), it does just fine with watercolors and colored pencils/baby oil.

I read somewhere that you should stamp versa mark over the stamp and then the ink you want to use. I do this now and find my acrylic stamps especially don't stain, stamping up being particularly troublesome. The ink now comes off with a baby wipe.

I rinsed my SU black pad as suggested. It ran purple for several minutes. When it dried, I reinked it w/black, but I'm still not convinced that it really looks black. In any case, the only way I can remove SU black from my stamps is to use Staz-on ink remover. Since I'm using it to create indexes for my stamps, I bought Memento Tuxedo black. It not only doesn't stain my stamps, but it cleans right off w/my homemade stamp cleaner. I still haven't decided what to do w/my SU black...:-|

I don't like SU black ink. Besides having a purplish hue, I don't find that it's permanent and have had it smear when coloring in an outline image. I use Archival Jet Black. It's a true black. It's permanent, smear proof, fade proof and water proof. I've used the same ink pad (with a lot of re-inkings) for over 5 years now.

I threw my SU black away after my daughter asked me why I stamped something in purple! I now use the Versafine Black Onyx. It's always stamps a crisp image and the pad stays juicy. You have to actually use a light touch or you'll get your stamps too inky! The best part is that it doesn't stain your stamps either!
