Where to buy Seam Binding
Hi All!
Seam Binding on projects is the latest trend right now (so of course I have to get some;)) but where would I purchase it from? I tried JoAnn's today and came up empty. Unfortunately, Fabric Stores seem to be a thing of the past now. I think I read somewhere on here that Rayon Seam Binding is recommended for dying and crinkling, is this correct?
Any help is much appreciated!!
Thanks,
Melanie

JoAnn's by me has it, in with the packaged rick rack, bias tape, etc. There is probably not a choice of what it is made from. Best just to buy a pack of white and try dyeing it and see how it takes ink. Higher end fabric stores (think Project Runway) may have different types available by the yard on big spools like ribbons and trims. I'm going through my sewing box right now to see what I can find to play with!

I asked for it at my Joanns (MA) the other day but all they had was hem tape; it looked the same so I bought 2 packs; one is light purple and the other is a blush color; 3 yds for $1.89 and I don't have to die it; I figured I'd give it a try! hopefully, I can find time tonite so I can let you know how it looks!

They have probably moved it to the racks. Middy Braid has moved there as well as twill tape.
Oh by racks I mean over by the trims.

I googled it and found a good price in NY for a 100 yd. spool of white seam binding. It arrived promptly and it should last me a lifetime! Sorry I can't remember the name.

The Mood fabric is a warehouse thing. I am sure in most cities such a thing exists. I was at the Dallas one yesterday Golden D'Or and I do believe they ship. The rayon seam binding was a whopping 20 cents a yard.

Oh I've missed the newest trend involving seam binding. Is it used as ribbon?

I posted on the other thread, but I'll post again here.
The hem/bias tape currently in Joanns is polyester, NOT rayon, and will not take dye well or crinkle at all. You must use the rayon for this type of project.
You can get the rayon tape from seller "zipperstop" on ebay. They're a reliable seller, and I've been buying from them for years.
I've seen many posts about dyeing the tape with reinkers or spritz sprays. It's all well and good for instant color, but since there's no fixative applied after the dye, your colors may run. Just store two colors next to each other and get some humid weather--the dyes could transfer. Ditto with using tapes dyed in this manner in a scrapbook--they will not be colorfast long term.
An alternative method is to take colored rayon tape and using a discharge dye method. If you rinse well, your colors will be stable and there's no chance of dye transfer.
Just my .02 as an old school dyer of fabrics and yarn.

The web site post #10 is referring to is: http://www.zipperstop.com/index.php?...d=33&Itemid=73
They're also on eBay. There's a video tutorial out there somewhere I've tried to find, but have had no luck, and can't find the other thread that talks about this. Good luck!

OK, just found one of the tutorials (both are very similar: one uses distress reinkers and the other uses Glimmermist). Here's the link for the distress reinkers: http://qksc.blogspot.com/2010/03/lets-get-inky

My good friend sells Vintage Shabby Seam Binding on Etsy. She has a ton of colors to chose from, and is great to do business with. Her link is: http://www.etsy.com/shop/debssimpletreasures
Hope that helps!

HERE is a link to my blog post about this if you are interested. I know that the seam binding isn't totally colorfast but i'm using it on cards so it doesn't really matter to me.

I bought a 100 yd roll from Ebay seller Zipperstop ($7.95 +Shipping). They sell it in multiple colors but I purchased white so that I could dye it myself.
I followed the same tutorial mentioned above using distress ink reinkers, Stampin up reinkers with water, Perfect Pearls & Tim's mini mister.
I love this technique..lots of fun & a little messy! I used cheapo plastic gloves from the dollar store to avoid staining my hands.
This was my first attempt:

The unwrinkled seam binding can be purchased cheap from this seller on Etsy. It's where I bought a ton of it a long time ago. Great seller, fast shipping and the colors are BEAUTIFUL!

okay dumb question... would it be better if you were going to color these to get the bright white or the off white?? ( i tend to lean more towards distressed and faded colors so my brain says buy off white... then i wonder if it would be harder for an off white to absorb the color??)

I ordered from one of the Etsy links that Melissa had in a recent post after I saw her beautiful projects! It wasn't expensive; I'll post something once I receive it and try it out!
Also, here's a link to Michelle Wooderson's blog; she sells it and has several posts using it; http://michellewooderson.blogspot.co...inkle%20Ribbon

i've bought from zipperstop LOTS and they are always fast and friendly and the price is great!
