Default How do you use SU water color crayons?

I have read several people sing the praises of SU water color crayons. How do you use them?
Thanks

I have used them a few different ways

color directly on to a stamp and spritz with water then stamp the image
color stamped image and then use a wet brush to move the color around (kwim?)
draw on the lid of the WCWC to use as a palette and pick up color from there on the brush and paint onto the image

I do what Victoria mentions, only I use a blender pen rather than a brush.

If you go to the thread about using SU products, there is a discussion on pages 16 and 17 (I think starts about post number 630). Forums at Splitcoaststampers

This was my addition to that conversation:

I was doing bedtime reading in the big 09\10 catty last night, and came across a neat technique on pg 52, using Watercolor Wonders crayons and twill tape. You colour your stamp with the crayons, spritz lightly with water, and stamp onto the twill tape. So I tried it out. It's a neat technique, first few tries were not wonderful, but I like the look.

I use my aquapainter to wet my image slightly, and then i use it to pick up color from the crayon itself and paint my image. I like that the colors of the crayons are really vibrant. That reminds me that I have to get them out. I have been doing so much with my punches, I hardly ever color or paint images anymore.

We did a watercoloring class at one of out stampcamps and used the blender pen and aquapainter. Nothing groundbreaking but here's the link to the class handout with colored photos http://jackietopa.typepad.com/addict...ng-class-

If I have thick stamps (bold images) then I use the water color crayons to color on the images directly, spritz the stamps with a water bottle, wait just a few seconds and then stamp.

If I have an image designed to be colored in, I will stamp the image with a nice black waterproof ink (say Memento); then use the watercolor crayons to color a bit (not too much), then I go over the color with my blender pen (to smooth out the watercolor area using a blender pen); If I need more color, I can dab the watercolor crayon with my blender pen to pick up some extra color.

Cheers, Holley

I love my WWC! My very favorite way to use them: Stamp your image with black StazOn. Color directly onto the paper, but don't try to color in the whole area. Just put lines of color in the area where you want them. A tip: use the shading lines provided by the artist and put darker colors in those areas, lighter colors blending away from them.

Then use a VersaMarker pen to move the color around, fill in the areas and blend the shades of color. Now sprinkle with clear embossing powder and heat set.

Here's a card that uses that technique.

LOVE my watercolors! Best SU investment I ever made and use them often. I have loads of examples on my blog of stuff I've made with them. I use my waterpen directly to the crayon to color the images. I've had my crayons since they first came out and with all the use, they still look almost new. They really last!

I always use the wc crayons for filling in images. I hope they sell the new colors as a separated set so I don't have to duplicate (that would make me not want to buy them). They last a very long time.

Check the Resource/Tutorial pages here at SCS ... there are several tutorials created when the WWC were first available.

HTH,
Awesome! TFS! I was so hoping they weren't going to come in those silly boxes like my neutrals did. Sounds like I can use an old tin for my neutrals? When I got mine they came in 4 tins, 1 for each color family and that silly box for neutrals. I love those crayons and use them a lot!

It is a water and glycerin mixture. I have a few videos on my website using crayons, blender pens and aquapainters. Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Sometimes I actually draw with them...in a child like fashion ('cuz I can't draw any other way!) for a whimsical look...then slightly blend the colors

Here is a card I made with my club last year

I was excited to read this thread because I don't use my wc crayons enough. Please tell me how much of the time are you using Watercolor paper with these techniques?

I love my WCC! I would say I use watercolor paper with them 99.9% of the time. Almost never Whisper White. Rarely, some of the other neutral papers, such as confetti and naturals. It's an absorbency thing. The water sits on top of the Whisper White and Shimmery White, and pills the Whisper White paper. Watercolor paper and an aquapainter allows you to blend the colors oh-so beautifully!
