A concerned store manager who asked not to be identified shared the actual policy from his manual with me in hopes that it would clarify Michaels policy for the thousands of SplitCoastStampers. I have the original from his book - he kept a copy.
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE 404 - EFFECTIVE DATE FEBRUARY 2, 2010.
The policy says that "The acceptance of coupon discounts is limited to one coupon type per customer per customer per day.
"Type 1- %Off Any Regular Price Item (AORP)
Type 2-% Off Entire Regular Price Purchase (ERPP)
Type 3-% Off Entire Purchase (EP)
Type 4- Any Type Bonus Coupon (Bonus)
Type 5-Any Department Level Coupon (Department)
Type-6-Michaels Rewards Loyalty Card (Loyalty) discount"
So in general for most of us, it probably does mean that we can only use 1 coupon at a time if we have only Type 1 coupons: $Off Any Regular Price Item.
I just got back from there and noticed for the first time ever (at least on my local store) a sign that said they would accept competitor's coupons and would match advertised prices. That was a new thing for me.

Wasn't that pretty much the standard all along ? I'm sure some stores will continue to deviate from that policy, but in a worst case scenario, the coupons could be fewer and less often. And I wonder why it becomes an issue? Because of the stores that deviate and the customers that abuse the system. Nothing personal meant to OP,r anyone else in this thread, or anyone who enters the thread later, so please do not shoot the messenger

you used to be able to use one micheals and one joannes at at time there. for me it is worth the drive out to joannes where you can use abunch of coupons at once
She said that there were 42 SELECT stores that held a LIMITED TIME competitor coupon plus 10% off. An example would have been a Joann's 40% could have been used for 40% plus 10% extra = total 50% off. And for a limited time, they would also accept a Michaels coupon for the same transaction, but not for the same item.
And now Corporate rules are one coupon per customer per day at face value only, no matter if it is a Michael's coupon or a competitor coupon.
I shop at both JoAnn's and Michaels and always with coupons. Both stores accept competitor coupons, usually only for items both stores carry though. Michael's often has more items I want, but they no longer accept coupons for books or magazines and they have that one coupon per day thing. JoAnn's will accept multiple coupons on one transaction as long as the coupons have different codes - so I use the ones I get in the mail, by email and from the newspaper all at once because even when the coupons are the same, they have different codes based on where I got them.

Our Michaels here and Joanns both take the competitors coupons and multiple coupons to boot. I used SIX coupons on my most recent visit to Michaels and have done this many, many times in the past.
blessings.
The sad thing is that customers of M's have gotten used to always asking or using a coupon. Though Corporate's new policy is that the customer must bring in there coupon to receive the discount and this is when customer then gets upset with the cashier that they cannot give it to them. I just wish M's management would understand the harassment that is then forced upon there associate's to deal with. For sure many of the associate's do not get paid enough money to have to put up that kind of ignorance.
I'm sort of confused - I have always always brought my coupon with me to M's and it has been years since they stopped having extra newspaper flyers on hand. Same for JoAnn's. Are there really people who go there without coupons and expect the store to still give them a coupon discount? Does that happen in any store? And how awful that they take out their frusration on the clerks who are just trying to follow policy and do their jobs!

Well, it used to be that you could go in without a coupon, give them your zip code, and get the discount...
No wonder everyone is confused.
And sometimes things happen like the newspaper ad didn't get inserted into the paper a customer buys...so not everyone that comes in empty handed without a coupon planned it that way...just a thought...
What is the Type 6 Loyalty Rewards Discount? I've never heard of that one? They own me some kind a loyalty discount for the thousands of dollars I've spent in there!
This may have already been said...I was is M's about a month ago and while at the register I overheard what looked to me like a General Manager type telling the staff that effective immediatly M's coupon policy is "One coupon per customer per day" They will still take competitors coupons but you can still only use one per day period.

Hi - This was a program that they offered to email subscribers last year. I joined with the glorious notion that I would save money on all those "little" purchases. I rarely use coupons on items $5 or less, so I thought in the long run this could be a good thing.
First of all, the program offered was not the same to everyone. My program was different than the one my Mom got. Also, once I signed up, they changed it on me. I would have to go back look to see what I thought my original deal was going to be. What I currently have and on the back of my card is 20% ERPP ( i think that means regualr priced items) and 60% off custom framing.
In conclusion, I would not sign up for the program again. The main reason being that I was not allowed to use the card if also using a Type 1 coupon. Therefore, I would have to plan special trips where I would only buy the "little" items and save the bigger purchases for trips with the 40% or 50% off coupons. That is too frustrating for me. I also seriously doubt I saved any money by joining the program. Yes, you did have to pay a fee like a memebership fee, so it only works if you think you will purchase beyond that fee amount.
BTW - hilarious when I do pull it out and the new employee has no idea what to do with it. Obviously, employee turnover is quite high at our store.
I signed up for the "discount program" at my store and got a card like the grocery club type card. It gives me an extra 10% off my purchases. That is when I remember to use it...
Hit the Jackpot: so I was in Michael's (not one I typically go to) and I was searching my coupons for my Michael's coupon and I had a 50% Jo coupon, 40% Jo coupon and my 50% Michael's and the girl let me use them ALL! I was amazed but didn't argue the point for a second.
I used to make the extra trip out to Michaels. Now, I basically stay at Joanne's and use multiple coupons. Of course, most of the coupons from Joanne's are 40% off a regular priced item. They seem to place on sale the items I am after and I get 30% off instead of 40 or 50. Oh well, it is better tha paying full price and I love coupons.

My issue w/ Joann's coupons right now is they do them in color and I only have a b/w printer so the actual % doesn't show so it only works at Jo's. For instance I need a 40% off coupon right now for a local scrapbook store to honor and I can't find out- but it has to be B/W.

But the policy posted in #1 above says "one coupon type per customer per day". It looks like you can use one of each type of coupon each day. Of course, there are usually, at the most, only a couple of different coupons at a time.
Sharon...can you scan the page from the handbook and post it here? Then we can print it out and show it at the store if we get grief from the manager.

My Roberts always has tons of ads on hand. Half the time they don't even keep the coupon. Micheals is very strict though!!
I was in one local Michaels the other day and the clerk told me I could use two coupons IF the discount was different. So I used one Michaels 40% off and one Joanns 50% off.
