Post Need a Poem?

I wanted to start a thread with stamping or greeting card poetry I have collected. Please consider sharing what you have. Here are four I'll share for now until next time. Enjoy!

What's a Greeting Card?
Author Unknown.

It's a little piece of paper
That tells someone how you care;
It can be a ray of sunshine --
It can be a wish or prayer.

It can simply say, "I love you"
Or just say, "I understand"
It can be a little visit,
Or the clasp of someone's hand.

It can be a word of comfort
When somebody's heart is sad,
It can be a smile or chuckle
Making someone's heart feel glad.

It can keep folks close together
Even though they're far apart;
It can show someone you're thankful
From the bottom of your heart.

It can travel any distance
In all kinds of weather, too.
And it has the "magic something"
That some "big things"never do.

Yes, it's just a piece of paper
And it costs no big amount,
But it proves that old, old saying;
It's the little things that count."
~~~~~
Ode to My Wife.
By Author Unknown.
She learned to stamp on Monday
Her embossing was quite fine.
She forgot to set out dinner,
So we went out to dine.
She brayered backgrounds Tuesday
She says they are a must.
They really were quite lovely
But she forgot to dust.
On Wednesday it was birthday cards
She says that chalking's fun.
Shading, blending, and watercoloring --
But the laundry wasn't done.
Her card swap was on Thursday
Using green and blue and red;
I guess she really was engrossed,
She never made the bed!
It was shaker cards on Friday
Using techniques she just adores,
But she never seemed to notice
The crumbs on all the floors.
I found a maid on Saturday!
My week is now complete
My wife can stamp the hours away;
The house will still be neat.
Well, it's already Sunday,
And my forehead's feeling damp.
I cursed, I raved, and I ranted -- :mad:
The MAID has learned to stamp!
~~~~~
Ode to Free Stamps
By Janine Tinklenberg.

I think that I shall never see
A stamp as lovely as one that's FREE
Arriving here by UPS!
I sit all day in strain and stress
And wait for that great big brown truck.
If my stamps aren't on it, I'm out of luck!
My heart starts beating with sheer delight!
My breath comes fast, my sight grows dim,
As if I was running in a gym!
And what a miracle to see
That brown truck stopping with stamps for me!
The UPS man must surely think
That I am much the worse for drink!
When I tear open my green front door
And greet him warmly with smiles galore.
He hands me my box and is startled to see
Me scuttle inside to search frantically
For my craft and rubber scissors bright
To mount my stamps and stamp all night!
~~~~~
Just a Line to Say I'm Living.
Author Unknown.
Just a line to say I'm living,
That I'm not among the dead,
Tho I'm getting more forgetful
And more mixed up in the head.
For sometimes I can't remember
When I stand at the foot of the stair,
If I must go up for something
Or if I've just come down from there!
And before the fridge so often
My poor mind is filled with doubt . . .:confused:
Have I just put the food away
Or have I come to take some out?
And then there's times when it's dark out
And with my night cap on my head
I don't know if I'm retiring
Or just getting out of bed.
So if it's my turn to write you,
There's no need in getting sore,
I might think I've already written
And don't want to be a bore.
So remember that I love you.
And wish you were here,
And now it's nearly mail time, so
I must say, "Goodbye, M'dear."
There I stood beside the mailbox
With a face so very red . . .
Instead of mailing you a letter,
I had opened it instead!
Christmas Cards
By Alice Arlene MacCulloch
There's something about a Christmas card,
At this season of the year,
Which leaves a special kind of joy
And fills the heart with cheer.
They speed across the lonely miles,
Bright Santas in a sleigh,
O what a lovely cheery thought
These Christmas cards convey.
They come to wish you joy and peace,
With wise men and a star,
Like joyous Yuletide messengers
From friends both near and far.
Exquisite scenes so beautiful
Of homes and drifted snow,
Of children's happy faces
And stockings in a row.
A group of little carolers,
Some lines from "Silent Night,"
"May peace, good will and happiness
Make your Christmas Day so bright."
When I receive a Christmas card,
It fills my day with such delight . . .
May I tuck love and friendship
Into everyone I write.
~~~~~
A Christmas Card
By Isobel Miller.

A Christmas card
is a special card with silver mood
and red-gold thoughts;
a golden glamor or a spiritual blue
with something intangible, something new
to read between the lines.

A Christmas card
is a personal thing
using small peaceful words such as joy and goodwill;
it collects its friends like bouquets to fill
with choice and seasonal wishes.

A Christmas card
is a singer of songs
that tell an ancient story; a holy night,
nostalgic star
and heavenly angel's glory,
a card to be read, and read again . . .
a Christmas card, a Christmas card.
~~~~~
Someone here, in another thread, wanted a Candy Cane poem for a card they were making. I found two at this website: http://www.creativeladiesministry.com
Ode to Paper
By Maria Nerius
Paper: n. compressed matted vegetable substance in thin flexible sheet form being the precipitate of a fibrous pulp in water; a supply a rubberstamper can never have too much of
I am an addict that's for sure,
But, my love for paper
Is deep, sincere and pure.
Paper, Paper, Paper.
My stash is ever growing.
Hear me triumphantly shout,
"Don't throw that paper out!"
Cloud White, Sunflower Yellow,
Ocean Blue or Peacock Green
Eggplant Purple or Chocolate Brown
Candy Apple Red or Tangerine.
Just a scrap or a whole big sheet
Brings me to my stamping feet.
It's a canvas on which to create.
I never turn away. I'm never late.
Gimme origami,
Hand over quilling strips,
Don't forget the vellum
Add some Washi and I'll be happy
As I sigh over linen, so crisp and bouncy.
Imagination thrives in me,
I'm a busy as a bee.
Creativity never fails with paper
Do you understand my paper glee?
Paper, Paper, Paper
Such a pulpy bliss,
To stamp my heart out during any crisis.
I'm starting early for me, reading all the posts on SCS for "Teacher Appreciation". Here are some threads that have poetry for Teacher's Thank you's (either w/ a gift or on a scrapbooking page), or sayings, and a Teacher's Survival Kit. By the way, if you get a chance, go back and do a search on "Teacher's Appreciation" and read all the great ideas there are. I just may have to case a few!
Before It Is Too Late
By George Bancroft Griffith
If you have a gray-haired mother
In the old home far away,
Sit you down and write the letter (or send the card)
You put off from day to day.
Don't wait until her weary steps
Reach Heaven's pearly gate.
But show her that you think of her,
Before it is too late.
If you have a tender message,
Or a loving word to say,
Don't wait till you forget it,
But whisper it to-day.
Who knows what bitter memories
May haunt you if you wait?
So make your loved one happy
Before it is too late.
The tender word unspoken,
The letters (cards) never sent,
The long forgotten messages,
The wealth of love unspent;
For these some hearts are breaking,
For these some loved ones wait;
Show them that you care for them
Before it is too late.
Default June Traditional Wedding Month!
Since June is a traditional wedding month, I went looking through the forum for wedding/marriage/anniversary poetry. Came up with mostly Paint Can Poems, but there were a few other gems too!
Marriage Made in Heaven;
Cash Tree Poem;
Paint Can Kit (ideas); and
Our Thankfulness Can.
Here's a Special Gift Favor Poem. Stamp the wrapping paper you wrap a tiny box with, then attach this poem to a small gift card to the wrapped "gift box" with a ribbon & bow. I've also have glued a strong magnet to the back of the box for a refrigerator magnet for my mother, MIL, & grandmothers.
This is a very special gift
That you can never see.
The reason it's so special is
It's just for you from me.
Whenever you are lonely
Or even feeling blue,
You only have to hold this gift
And know I think of you.
You never can unwrap it;
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close to your heart --
It's filled with love inside.
This is my all time favorite...it's framed on my stamp room wall, but unfortunately I don't know the author.
Life Without Stamping....Isn't
I've got a habit
And it's plain to me
Life can't go on
Without E.P.
Paper and embellishments
Piled up high
I love stampin'
My oh My!
I mask, I layer
I emboss and more
Then I'm back to shopping
At another stamp store.
If I didn't have stampin'
Oh what would I do?
I'd be back to housework
How about you?
Lock me up
Throw away the key
Or give me stampin'
And set me free!!!!
Thanks, Jeri, for posting that cute poem!
By the way, since I was on the subject of June weddings, somebody mentioned in one of the threads above abt. a wedding blessing. Here's the version I knew I had seen somewhere! At www.oldfashionedliving.com
Wedding Blessing
Bread  So you never go hungry.
Wine  So your life is always sweet.
Salt  So there is always spice in your life.
And a Candle  So you always have light.'
Put in a large picnic or "Easter type" basket with handle and individually label each item with its respective line from the poem or stamp a gift card to attach to the basket. On the outside, write this saying: "It's the Little Moments that Count" and on the inside, the above blessing. Breadsticks are the bread. A bottle of wine or non-alcoholic wine or apple cider. Glass Salt and Pepper Shakers for the spice of life which you can stamp and a scented stamped candle provide the light. Two stamped Champagne Flutes are also included for the first toast to the newlyweds. I made one of these baskets for my cousin & wrapped it in a red/white paper picnic tablecloth & tied it at the top with white curling ribbon. I had her maid of honor stick it in the car with their honeymoon suitcases. I heard later they really enjoyed it!
I'm not sure this qualifies as greeting card poetry but it was printed on a napkin at a restaurant I visited as a child while on vacation in Canada with my parents. Obviously it made an impression because it's been over 30 years and I still remember it!!
Why Worry
There are only 2 things to worry about
either you are well or you are sick
If you are well then there is nothing to worry about
if you are sick you have 2 things to worry about
either you will get better or you will die
if you get better then there is nothing to worry about
if you die you have 2 things to worry about
either you will go to heaven or to hell
if you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about
if you go to hell you'll be so da*# busy catching up with old friends
you won't have time to worry!
Stamp and decorate a tag. Glue this little poem to it written either in your best calligraphy or printed on your computer Then, use pinking shears to cut the edge of a small round piece of fabric. Now cover a tiny rock and tie closed with piece of fiber or ribbon. Attach to the rock package for a small gift. We've made these for bazaars and also as a secret sister gift. Enjoy!
I'm your little prayer rock...
and this is what I'll do,
just put me on your pillow
till the day is through.
Then turn back the covers
and climb into your bed
and whack, your little prayer rock
will hit you on your head.
Then you will remember
as the day is through
to kneel and say your prayers
as you wanted to.
Then when you are finished
just dump me on the floor,
I'll stay there thru the night
to give you help once more.
When you get up next morning,
clunk, I'll stub your toe
so you'll remember your
morning prayers before you go.
Put me back upon your pillow
when your bed is made
and your clever little prayer rock
will continue in your aid.
Because your heavenly Father
cares and loves you so,
He wants you to remember
to talk to Him, you know.
Blessings!
August is back to school time for many, so here's a little poem to go with that care package moms can send with their high school/college age kids!
Student Survival Kit
Sponge -- to soak up all the knowledge
Eraser -- to remind you that each day you can start with a clean slate
Candle - for when you are burning the midnight oil studying
Button -- to remind you that sometimes you have to button your lip
Pack of Gum -- so your class can “stick” together
Tootsie Roll -- to help you roll with the punches
Mounds Bar -- for all the information you will need to retain
Toothpicks -- to hold your eyes open during class
Lifesaver -- for when you feel you are drowning in information
Skor Candy Bar -- to remind you to score well on your tests
Sweet and Sour Candy -- to help you accept and appreciate the differences in others
Sucker -- to remind you not to be a “sucker”. Be your own person.
Carefree Gum -- to remind you to have fun.
Hugs & Kisses -- to remind you I am always here and I love you (a mom sentiment).
A Lollipop -- to help you lick your problems
Tissues -- to wipe away the sleepers after sleeping during class.
Pencil -- to “Write” your wrongs
Cotton Ball -- for when you can’t hear yourself think
Penny -- so you always have enough “cents” to realize what a valuable person you are.
And this thread contains a Teacher Survival Kit too, for those back to school gifts!
Nice to see you got one of mine...
Here's another:
Too Nice to Use
I know these cards are pretty.
I made them all myself.
But cards are meant for sending,
Not sitting on a shelf.
So choose some friends to mail them to
And send them out the door.
'Cause if you keep them to yourself
You won't be getting any more!!!
Default Labor Day
Aren't you glad you don't have to labor this hard on one of your greeting cards?
Here's a poem about commercial card-making by one of America's beloved greeting card writers, Helen Steiner Rice.
The Anatomy of a Greeting Card
Written to mark Gibson's 100th Anniversary
by Helen Steiner Rice
You've read what the different departments do,
Now here's a summarized rhyme for you . . .
In short, it's just a bird's-eye view
Of what a Greeting Card goes through . . .
You've no idea how much work it requires
To make a card that the public desires,
We're sure that none of you surmised
And that you'll all be very surprised
To follow the Birth of a Gibson Greeting
AT Our Hundredth Anniversary Meeting:
In the Birth of a Card the First Operation
Is, as it should be, "An Act of Creation" . . .
So, on the 4th floor, in the Department of Art,
Some artist gives a Card its start,
A little paint and a clever line
And the artist presents a new design . . .
From there it leaves the scene of art
And goes to get itself a "heart" --
For any card without a greeting
Is like a visit without a meeting,
So down to the Editorial it goes
For a sentiment written in rhyme or prose,
Then the Numbering and Estimate fellows step in
And order the quantity required to begin,
Work Sheets are written and Records compiled
And Drawings are made and Lettering is styled,
The Layout Department then figures the "sheet"
And makes a "layout" that neat and complete,
Then the Engravers and Plate Makers start
And contribute their most essential part,
Then the Card goes to the Printing Floor
And the powerful presses begin to roar . . .
From here cards go to the Die-Maker's place
And "die-outs" are made to take care of each case,
Then back to the Press Room to be Cut-Out and Sized
In a manner that leaves you amazed and surprised,
Then the Caption is Stamped and the Card is ready
To take on the glamour of Hollywood's Hedy
Silk Screening, Flocking, Embossing and Flitter
Are added to give the Card glamour and glitter,
Then cards are Folded by hand or machine
And carefully done so they stay white and clean,
Then a Sample's Assembled and from this one
The entire "run" is fashioned and done,
Ribbon, Sachet and Satin and Lace
Are put on by hand, by girls in the place,
Then cards are Checked, O.K.'d and Inspected
So any errors can be detected
Now they are ready for the last, final touch,
That consists of Boxing and Labeling and such,
Then on to the Shipping Room bunks to be stacked
Until it is time for them to be packed,
And where the Card is shipped and lands
Is in some Super-Salesman's hands
Its Destiny rests in the Dealer's Display,
Where the Passing Parade goes by it each day,
And who can tell and who can guess
How great is its power for happiness . . .
And so your loved ones have had a part
In reaching and touching the "Nation's Heart" --
And Friendship and Love and Goodwill on Earth
Are kept alive through the Greeting Card's Birth.
I wonder what is all involved in the process of making rubber stamps for us to use to make cards. Anybody know?
Default October is Pastor Appreciation Month
Kellen, in post 28, there is a link to Sawyer's survival kits. I hope the "NewlyWeds" one is the one you are seeking!
Also the same website has a "Pastor's Wife Kit" if you want to show her your appreciation.
I found a Pastor's Survival Kit that I want to share here. It's similar to the Pastor's Wife one. Put the following items in a sandwich baggie, top with a stamped tag along with this list.
A STICK OF GUM -- to remind you to stick with it.
A CANDLE (birthday candle) -- to give you light when you feel burned out.
A CHOCOLATE KISS -- to remind you that someone cares.
SMARTIES (sour candies that come in a roll) -- to help you on days when you don't feel so smart.
LIFESAVER -- to remind you that everyone needs help once in a while.
A SNICKER -- to remind you to see the funny side -- there is one!
A ROSE -- to remind you to take time to smell the flowers.
CONFETTI -- to help you celebrate the good times.
A PENNY -- with thanks for sharing your thoughts.
A BAG -- to help you keep it all together.
On a more serious note, type this one up and insert in a card. Or type on a piece of vellum in a fancy font and insert into a picture frame over a piece of pretty scrapbook paper. Or write on parchment paper in your best calligraphy and stamp a church building or cross to the side and insert into a photo frame.
To Our Pastor.
Author Unknown.
Our God has sent you to this place
To lead us in the way
That He would have us work and think
And live from day to day.
No matter the hour; whatever the need,
You've gone the extra mile --
Always ready and willing to share
A comforting thought and smile.
We're grateful you've been with us
To teach us from His word,
And we will try to do our best
In service of our Lord.
We thank you for your ministry,
Your guidance and your care.
His greatest blessings for your life
Is our most humble prayer.
Default Third Sunday in October is Sunday School Teacher Appreciation Day
Here's a small poem to insert into a scrapbook gift or tie to a pair of stamped sculpey earrings or pin for a Sunday School teacher.
Unity.
Author Unknown.
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptor's there.
The clay they used was a young child's mind,
And they fashioned it with care.
One was the teacher, and the tools he used
Were the Bible and music and art.
One was a parent who worked with a guiding hand,
A gentle and loving heart.
Sunday after Sunday, the teacher toiled
With a touch that was deft and sure,
While the parent labored by his side
And polished and smoothed it o'er.
And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they wrought;
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought.
And each agreed he would have failed
If he had worked alone.
For behind the teacher stood the church,
And behind the parent -- the home.
Kimi2, sorry to hear about your dad. You might want to check out these two threads here at SCS > Things My Father Taught Me & Cancer Support Basket Idea.
I have a few scrapbook Daddy poems I thot I might share here with you.
Daddy's Shoes
Author Unknown.
These shoes are too big for me,
As you can plainly see,
But even when I'm all grown up,
They'll still be big on me.
The reason is quite simple,
I'm sure you will agree,
No one else can fill these shoes
Like my Daddy.
~~~~~
Daddy's Hands
By Holly Dunn.

I remember Daddy's hands folded silently in prayer
And reaching out to hold me when I had a nightmare.
You could read quite a story in the callouses and lines
Years of work and worry had left their mark behind.

I remember Daddy's hands, how they held my Mama tight
And patted my back for something done right.
There are things that I've forgotten that
I loved about the man,
But I'll always remember the love in Daddy's hands.

(Chorus)
Daddy's hands were soft and kind
When I was crying.
Daddy's hands were hard as steel
When I'd done wrong.
Daddy's hands weren't always gentle
But I've come to understand
There was always love in Daddy's hands.

I remember Daddy's hands working till they bled.
Sacrificed unselfishly just to keep us all fed.
If I could do things over, I'd live my life again
And never take for granted the love in Daddy's hands.
~~~~~
Daddy Fell in the Pond
By Alfred Noyes
found at www.poetry-online.org
Everyone grumbled, The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And then there seemed to be nothing beyond,
Then
Daddy fell into the pond!
And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed!" Click!
Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft,
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
Oh there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
When
Daddy Fell into the pond!
~~~~~
Sayings and Page Toppers

No matter how tall I grow, I will always look up to my Dad.

Fathers hope their sons will turn out just like them and worry that their daughters will meet someone who did.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

A father is someone you can lean on.

Blessed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him Father.

Any guy can be a father. It takes someone special to be a Daddy.

A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.

A Daddy is a man who has photos in his wallet where his money used to be.

It's easy for a father to hear himself talking. All he has to do is to listen to his children.

Children can find other children to be pals. Children need fathers to be fathers. (Garrison Keillor)
