Default How do you keep your digi's straight?

I have a bunch of digi's I've downloaded and they're all just in a folder on my desktop. Unfortunately some of them don't have the info from where they came from. Any ideas on how to keep them organized and labeled so I can give proper credit when I use them?

I know I should have labeled them when I downloaded them, but I didn't. Sigh.
Thoughts?

Hey Dani! It is best practice for the designer to add their credit in the actual filename itself. However, (from here on out) if they don't then just make a new folder with their blog address for the name. Then download to individual folders. The only thing you can do for the ones you already have is go searching!! Of course, when you post a card/project with a digi (that you don't where it came from) - You can always say something like... "pls let me know where this digi came from so I can give proper credit!!"

Oh, how I wish more designers put their info in the file name! I've been trying to add the info as I save them but sometimes I forget. I like your idea to post a disclaimer/plea as to the designer when I post something.
Thanks!

I save mine in separate folders with either the designers name, or the site address I download it from. I'm going to have to start making sub-category folders in the folders cause I have quite the collection now.

it didn't take me long to figure out I needed a system. Since digital images are becoming popular and inexpensive, I have saved mine on this device:
http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=UFL
they plug into your computer tower USB drive, same place as your camera plug.
You can name individual folders, and I usually rename the image with the company name and save to company folders, love this device because nothing is saved on your computer if it crashes, and you just plug it into the tower when you want to use it, and little storage space. Just an important note:
you have to click on the icons on the bottom right to remove the device from your tower,
these little gems are on sale often and can be found at any discount store.

Default save to folders

Yep, I do what some others have done and when i download, I save to a folder with the name of person or company. The idea of the filename having some reference is a good one!

That's a great way to track the source, but once you have the folders, how in the world can you find what you're looking for? This has been my dilemma....I don't want to search is 12 desiger folders for flowers, for instance.

I have been wondering about doing a 3 ring folder of digi images, with the
company name for fast reference to check; then go to that file folder to print it out.
Never organized enough

I save them in seperate folders as well based on company or blog.

I also make a master printed copy in my regular stamped image binder (right by my craft desk). I have so many that I forget what I have and find it a little while later. So, having it in the binder makes it easier so I can flip through and see what folder it came from. I wait until I have about 8 images from a particular place and then I put them all on one page and print it out.

I think I'm going to get another usb flashdrive, I like the idea of keeping it there and having the extra space on the computer... now... to convince hubby I need another thing in the house. ;)

You might want to try a "tagging" system that is popular with digital scrapbookers to organize their digi stash and pictures. Here's an older post on a digi board about two systems:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com...ganizing.shtml.

So you're basically organizing all your folders like everyone does today but you can "tag" your files so that you can then just go look in your directory for images that are tagged "flowers" or "quotes", etc.

I had purchased the program ACDSEE when I first started but have had lots of problems with it so now I'm looking into the free program Windows Photo Live Gallery. Hope this helps

When you download a zipped file or right click and save, you can CHANGE or ADD TO the name of the file. When I download or right click to save, I usually leave what the designer named the file but just ADD their name to the end. This way, I can put flowers in my "Flower" folder or get well digis in my "Get Well folder" and know who created it. So much easier than having to tag and search or keeping them in specific designer folders.

I am not at all computer savvy regarding files, saving, etc. Often, it seems to me when I request a download my system does not give me a choice of where to put it. Most often, it goes to a folder in my Documents - imaginatively called Downloads. Most recently they seem to be going in to a "new folder" within the Download folder.

I can rename the item, but is there a way to tell the computer where to send the download? (sometimes I have to track it down and that is not easy for me!)

Hi Dorothy,
When you click to download a file you should see the "file download" box pop up. After clicking on "save", you should see the "save to" screen pop up. This is where you find your folder to save into and change the name of the file. I've attached two screen shots.

Hope this helps.

I also have folders set up by company and if I have lots and lots from one company I set up sub folders. I like the idea of printing out the images and saving them to flip through!
