I can't view the link, but gel medium is not the same as zip dry. It's a product similar to mod podge in what you do with it, though gel medium is better and thicker. You can get it in art supply stores or specialty stamping stores.

I'm receiving a message that I don't have permission to view the image; however, I have used gel medium. It can be used as an adhesive and also to thin acrylic paint so that it stays wet longer, making it more "mixable" with other paints. I remember using it for an altered book about 6 years ago. If you need a very thick adhesive, you can use it for that too. Zip Dry is not a gel medium; it is a clear liquid paper glue. I used the gel medium made by Golden. I wish I could see the picture so that I could see what the gel medium was used for. HTH.
Lynn did this project as a Technique Lover's challenge a few weeks back so you'll most likely see lots of examples if you check that out. This one happens to be in the fan club gallery.
I don't think gel medium is essential, it just happens to be what this artist has used here. You just need something that will adhere paper to metal. Gel medium is just one of the things that will do that.

I am not sure what works with metal since I normally work in paper. I have modge podge but it says paper to paper. I will try it and see how strongly it adheres. I just don't want to have it fall off if he gives it as a present (embarrassing)

I made one of those necklaces for a present a few weeks back. Except, I used alcohol inks to color the washer directly (on both sides). Then I used crystal effects (instead of gel medium) to 'seal' it. I just squeezed out a thick layer on one side, let that dry overnight and repeated the layer of crystal effects on the opposite side.
The one thing I didn't like so much was that the CE left little bitty bubbles suspended in it. I swear they weren't in there when I left it to dry! lol I think though, that with the right paper or colors, that would be a neat thing to have happen...maybe for a watery look. Oh well - I still gave the necklace away and my friend seemed to like it despite the bubbles.

I like the idea of using the alcohol inks. Maybe I will do one side with the inks and the other with dp. This will be fun to play around with.
Gel medium is an artist acrylic that can be mixed with acrylic paint to extend the paint volume, build texture, slow drying, and to enhance blending. You can use it to thin an acrylic paint, thereby creating a glaze. You can use it prep a surface that you plan to paint on with acrylic paints. It is not for use with oil-based paints.
You can also use it as an adhesive and it is especially suited for collage and mixed media art where you might be adhering items made with a variety of materials including wood, metal, paper, etc.
You can find it at any art store or at craft stores. Michaels sells the Liquitex brand. You'll find it in their art aisle with the artist paints, paintbrushes, etc.
Another well-known brand is Golden. Here's a link to their site which gives more details about the various gel mediums they carry.
I use the Liquitex brand gel medium, matte (just because I'm not into high gloss type art). It's about the consistency of pudding (so, thicker than Mod Podge--not pourable), and I use paint brushes to apply it to my papers or other collage items.

The inventor of Mod Podge apparently tested it on all kinds of surfaces including decoupaging a Beetle car with bed sheets! So it should work just fine to stick some paper to a washer, I guess :lol: (scroll to the bottom of this page for a pic of the psychedelic result with the car!)
Anyone still looking for gel medium, if your local craft store stocks Ranger they may well have it as the Claudine Hellmuth Studio range includes both matt and gloss gel medium.
I made these and used tombo glue to attach the paper to the washer , worked great. Then I coated with glossy accents, let it dry, looked beautiful ... until i picked it up and handled it :( It got cloudy . I know I let it dry completely as I had set it aside for a few days to work on another project. thought maybe something on my hands so I washed hands and tried another one same result ;( I love this technique and think they'd make great gifts but I will not be giving any out until I solve this glitch.

I used Rangers Glossy Accents on mine, leaving overnight without moving it. It's still perfectly glossy and shiny.

:lol: I seem to have a special compartment in my brain for craft-related "stuff".
I think with that one I was looking for info about the different types of Mod Podge sometime and just followed the link to the history stuff on their web site (idle curiosity!). The idea of decoupaging a car struck me as funny so I guess it stuck. Probably a great way to get some publicity for your new product back then, too!
Ah well, you can get outdoor Mod Podge these days so maybe that's the way to go to deco-up your mini van for better weather tolerance - don't forget to let us know when you upload the pics of it to the gallery :lol:
Wow, I had never seen these altered washers before (don't know how I missed them.) Now I need to go down to the basement and root through hubby's jars of stuff and see if he has and washers I can "borrow".
Whee! hi ladies! Thanks for looking at my pendants. My favorite gel medium is Liquitex matte gel. It dries completely (unlike mod podge, which never dries in my climate) and VERY quickly, which is great because I'm impatient

thank you Lydia. Your pendants are fabulous. thanks so much for sharing them. I am totally addicted to making these. I am using Crystal Effects for now but when I can drag my arse out the door to get the Liquitex I will switch over. This is definately a fun project.
I made ton of these for Christmas, I also used alcohol inks instead of paper and used Diamond Glaze for the gel medium. Worked great and the finished product looked awesome!

I have been spending the time I could steal away from my family to make these today. I am still using the crystal effects. I think it is working fine, except I cut the tip of my new bottle a little too low so the opening is bigger than I like.
