Default Domino ornaments

I gotta gripe!

I set my mind to do some altered domino Christmas ornaments for my co-workers this year. So I went out and bought some stamps to fit and started looking for dominos. Well, my local thrift stores didn't have any, couldn't find any at Wal-mart, and the tin at Odd Lots was $10!! Argh!! Now what?! lol

I found some at Michaels (Canada). They were regular sized plastic sets for $3 - they were in the bins where they have all the cheapy stuff for kids.

Figures. I asked at JOANNs if they might have some and they didn't. Never thought to check Michaels!

The WalMart by me does not sell dominoes, but Target does. I'd love to see what you make if you decide to post them.

Do you use the black ones or the newer white ones w/ colored dots? I have some of both and would love to gift them to you. If you send me your snail mail I'll send them to you. Just let me know how many you need. Also, would love to have the directions so I can try my hand at them myself.

Woo-hoo!! Using Cat_Woman's suggestion, I stopped at Michael's after work tonight and found a set for $3!! They're white with the colored dots, but should work just fine!

Brenda - thanks for the offer, but you might want to try this for yourself! I'm using a tutorial from Debbie Seyer that someone directed me to: http://www.debbieseyer.com/my_weblog/2006/10/index.html. I've never made them myself, but will post mine when I do. They sound fairly simple! Also, there's another tutorial in the Resources section for altering dominos.

Let me tell ya how frustrated I was the other day! I stamped and colored 20 ornaments - they were looking sooo cute! I used irridescent ice and holographic EP on 3 of the 5 designs. On the other 2 designs, I planned on using Crystal Effects, so I used a heat-gun to heat set the colors. Applied my CE....and the colors bled all over the place!! Ruined 8 of my 20 ornaments!! Ugh. So I had to buy more dominos. Re-stamped, re-colored, etc. and decided to just clear-emboss them. Put 3 layers of EP on them and they looked pitted. Geez. I finally just used irridescent ice over them and they turned out ok. What a learning process!! lol

I'll try to post pics of my finished ornaments later....

I never made domino ornaments but remember seeing dominoes at RiteAid so perhaps chain drug stores with toy areas are a ggood source for anyone still looking.

It's been so long since I made these, sorry. I would say Crystal Effects is okay but only on a small portion. I did what you did - embossed the whole thing using Iridescent Ice Embossing powder. They turned out much better that way, too! Here is a link to the ones I made using the embossing powder. I might have to make some of these. This was posted in 2006! Gosh I didn't realize I had been blogging that long:cool:

I've been making them into pins and have sold quite a few of them the last couple of years. I just use a glue pen and some dazzling diamonds to give them some extra sparkle, it's quick and easy.

Here are the ornaments I was finally able to finish! The "jingle" ones were covered in the holographic EP, the rest in irridescent.

These are the one's I made last weekend. I used different coloured sharpies and acetone nail polish remover and a q-tip to blend the inks, stamped the image with stazon, and then glued a little rhinestone on with sobo glue. Once everything was dry I covered them with Plaid liquid glass.

They are all lovely. I don't remember reading about sobo glue; what makes it different from other types?

Sobo glue is another brand of white glue, but what I like about it is that is doesn't warp my paper, and its still a little flexible when it dries. It dries clear and won't yellow or turn brittle over time either. I buy mine at Michaels.

Wow ladies! Great dominos. TFS!
In the summer one of my friends who is a yard sale diva, looks for sets of dominoes for me. I look too but only go yard saling a couple times a summer. I like how the older ivory colored ones take ink better than the new ones with the colored dots. ( I use both but prefer the old sets).

I am going to look for dominoes on EBAY....I think you can get them fairly cheap there, even paying the shipping fees!! Off to look for dominoes!!
