Default TLC249 Metal Washer Pendant Necklace {11/30/09}

Tis the season of gift giving and today's TLC will have you making these adorable necklaces that are so easy to make, but look so awesome. You are going to love these and they make wonderful gifts!

You can embellish them or make them simple to suit your taste. This would also be a fun project to do with the kids as they select designs and doo-dads to add. Grandma or that special aunt will treasure the beautiful pendant necklace that your child creates just for her. You're sure to have fun, just don't tell your husband where all of his metal washers went. It will be our secret. The most time consuming part of this project is waiting for the Crystal Effect, Crystal Lacquer, Glossy Accents or what every clear glaze is your favorite choice.

I saw THIS POST (<-----CLICK) and was totally blown away at their beauty, and how easy they were to create. Shelly Katzung, a/k/a Sugrnspicy, has graciously agreed to share her project process with the TLC group.

What you will need for today's project:

Metal washers: New are preferred as you won't have to take the time to clean them up first. These can be found at any hardware store and if you are lucky, perhaps your hubby has a few unused ones in his garage.
Cording
Crystal Effects, Crystal Lacquer or Glossy Accents
Patterned paper OR if you prefer, Alcohol Inks
Sanding tool or emery board
Glue - E6000 or other glue suitable for metal. I used Tombow Mono Metal Liquid Glue

This step is optional, but I wanted to include some instruction. Shelly very cleverly stamped on the back of her washers using metal stamps. Shelly mentioned that it would be a good idea to practice your metal stamping first, until you get the hang of how hard you need to pound and how many times you need to pound. Mark the sentiment with a black or colored Sharpie, and let dry. Then wipe away excess with cloth dampened with alcohol, or a baby wipe.

1. When you are ready to begin, trace the washer onto patterned paper, both the inside, and the outside.

2. Glue the paper onto the washer. Let your glue partially dry, and then using the sanding block or emery board, sand the edges, and using your finger, push the center inward, smoothing down the center edges. It was at this point that you would want to apply any special embellishments to your pendant.

3. Apply Crystal Effects or your preferred coating product, (I used Crystal Lacquer) making sure it is completely coated, without bubbles. You can use a toothpick or straight pin to pop any bubbles that might form.

4. Now here is the time consuming part. Put your pendant aside, lying FLAT and let it set for 24 hours without disturbing it. This is vital for a stunning shining and clear glazing for your piece.

5. After your piece has had adequate time to dry, attach your cording and you are ready to go!

Some ideas for created your designs are using simple rub-ons and alcohol inks. Shelly has some wonderful examples on her blog (has music on her blog - wanted you to know just so you aren't surprised) as well as a video linked from Creative Juice with wonderful visuals on how to complete this project.

How fun it would be to make a few of these for Christmas gifts! I cannot wait to see what creative ideas you come up with for this project. Your ingenuity always blows my mind.

Be sure not to forget to include the keyword TLC249 when you upload your project so they will be included in the gallery.

HINT FOR NEXT WEEK: Shipping Tags will be needed as we transform them into something useful - aside from shipping things. =)

I see now what we need washers for. I found the ones that I use for counterweights, but they're going to be too small for this. Off on another hunt!

Fun stuff. I have those big washers in my SEWING supplies! I use them for pattern weights, but I think they all have felt glued to the back. And I'm stuck here with no wheels today! I know there would be no weight, but I wonder if I could fake it with chipboard. Thanks, Lynn.

You could try it, but I think the weight of the washer helps it hang more like a necklace, if you know what I mean.

One minor correction here ...
We mustn't "ask" if it's okay ...
We should simply "acquire" with an appropriate rationale! ;)
That's my plan, & I'm stickin' to it!

Working at a trucking company I am sure there are washers out in the repair shop. Now to just find a way to go get them. LOL.

These are so cool! I have to go run a few errands but when I come back I'm going to sift through the endless amount of tools in our garage to see if we have any washers!

Ohhh, what a great idea for teeny boppers! Hmm, I think my husband told me he had the smaller size and not the ones you requested. I'll look around though. Thanks Lynn.

These are really pretty! I do have one question though, if the back isn't covered with something, will the washer leave marks on clothing? I'd hate to try this and find that after a day of wearing it, I've got black stuff on my blouse from the washer rubbing against it all day.

Just a thought if you're concerned about rub-off ..
Coat the back of the washer with the same product that you use on the front. i.e. If you've used Glassy Glaze on the front, repeat it on the back, etc.
;)

Lynn,
I edited my previous uploads to include the TLC249, and entered them into the forum. Will they still be included in the gallery, if they were previously posted, and then edited?

If they are clean/new, I don't know what there would be to mark clothing. If you are using used washers, then a good scrubbing would be in order. (these are metal washers and not the rubber ones...just to clarify)

I would think they would be included in the gallery, as people will often enter items into a challenge that they actually made a while ago. Thanks so much for all of your instructions and great idea!

Wow...so I made one! I found a THIN washer at ACE Hardware. A thick washer would be too heavy, and I get BIG TIME headaches when I wear heavy jewelry.

I used UTEE to cover the paper and this worked really well.

Here's today's submission

Thanks for the tip about washers at Wal-Mart. I am so looking forward to making these cool necklaces! I am going to Hobby Lobby later for the glossy stuff ... will someone please tell me what product they have that I should get for this project? Thanks!

I think I am going to give the UTEE a try. I was thinking about it earlier, so I am glad that you tried it Faith. I am getting so impatient wating for the other ones to dry. I have my washers sitting on my filing cabinet so they don't get messed up and I keep getting up to look at them. Wait... Wait... Wait.

Lynn I think I am going to love how these turn out. I love the examples. The only thing I don't like is waiting. I am so impatient. I went to the shop and got 2 washers. While I am waiting for my glue to dry, I saw that Faith, used UTEE. I thought about using it before I saw hers, but I was trying to follow the directions as closely as I could. I had already used the washers, so the McGyver in me took over. I saw a can of soda on my desk. I thought that I would try this technique using the pop top tab. I really like how it turned out. I'll hopefully be back to link my other pendants when they dry. Wait... Wait... don't touch... wait...

Here is my Pop Top Pendant

I couldnt find any washers in my hubbys toolbox, so while I was out earlier I went into
ACE hardware and bought a few of them. Cant wait to try them.
