Whatever you do make sure it's "bright enough" My room is in the basement also and I did not do this. I have 4 counter top laps because of it.
I don't like flourescent lighting...whatever you do try to stay with daylight bulbs. Stay away from bulbs that will produce a yellow tint. I have a difficult time with these light trying to work with color.
Location: keeping my 7 yr old still, while I'm in stampin' bliss!

Some people SWEAR by Ott lighting, but I have 2 (desktop and floor) and I can't stand them. They leave such shadows that it is really hard to see, especially at night. I still use them, b/c I haven't found anything yet. I'm looking forward to see what everyone else says!
We are in the process of finishing our basement, and my craft room is going to have track lighting. I don't know that it's really "in" right now, but the electrician recommended it. I am going to have three rows so I can have task lighting in various stations. We'll see how it goes.
to be useable. So many times installers put track lighting so that the track is centered. Then when you get down to adjusting the lights so they shine on your work area, they are heating up the back of your head.
So once again, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Only this time it really helps to have the TRACK, not just the lights over the work area.
As a designer I have to discuss this w/installers all the time. As a person who made the first mistake in my own laundry room, I am reminded almost daily of the "hot head" results when I go in there and fold clothes or take things out of the dryer.

I have a basement crafting room but I spend almost all of my time crafting in my dining room since the lighting is terrible and there is no natural light. I have recessed lighting with daylight bulbs in them. I have about 12 in my room with additional task lighting over my main work counter.
I have 14' vaulted ceilings so I need tons of light to make it bright enough. I also have a large window and a 6' sliding glass door, so plenty of natural light during the day. Too bad I'm hardly ever home to craft during daylight hours, LOL. So I really depend on my daylight light bulbs.
If your craft table is against a wall, install two wall lights. They really are great for getting rid of shadows that other lights, ceiling or desk Ott, can create.
We just finished our basement, which has almost 9' ceilings and recessed lighting throughout. It's not bright enough for my workspace, but adding a work lamp and shelving lights has made it perfect. The shelving really needed help since the recessed lights were shadowed by the bookcase tops. We also have added a chandelier over the table.
Love your craft room! Is it always that neat? I have a problem keeping mine neat.

Hi, there! Lucky you to get a brand new craft room!
If you are still in the process of building of that room....I would suggest that you speak with your electrician or a lighting specialist to get the best outcome.
You might want to discuss things like task lighting to focus the light in the areas that you will be working in. Generally the light source should be turned away from you so that it avoids or minimizes a glare. There should be 2 sources on your work area to avoid shadowing. You should request lighting with a CRI (Color Rendering Index) closest to 100....which will give you the best color presentation - thus matches when you are working with different colors - like with your DP, inks , embellishments and ribbons etc. Incandescent bulbs, especially Daylight Bulbs, generally provide good color rendering. Fluorescent and halogen bulbs are alternatives to incandescent - as well as the inception of LED's. - but check the CRI because of the variety available. If you still have the availability - talk to the specialist to maximize your lighting location and bulb choices - which makes a big difference on your creations and new energy efficient sources which impact energy costs. Desk lamps are a form of task lighting...any of these types of bulbs should be available depending on the type of lamp that you buy.

P.S. No - I do not have an OTT lamp nor do I plan on buying one. There are many other options more reasonably priced.

My craft room has a standard ceiling fixture, and then an OTT light sitting high on top of two of the three drawer plastic units. I love my OTT!
Same here. The way my craft room is set up, my working desk is right at the window, then an OTT lamp, then a regular ceiling fixture with a daylight bulb in it.
I use 2 types of lighting: one to illuminate my general desk area (I have IKEA Grundtal lights attached to the bottom of 2 Jarpen shelves over my desk), and one for task lighting (regular desk lamp) if I want a more concentrated light source. OFten times I use both, but sometimes I just use the general lighting. I've found this setup to be perfect for me
I went with daylight flourescent(I think), both overhead and under cabinet. I wanted clean bright light and have been VERY happy with it.
I have the very same thing, and totally love it. I highly recommend this for the quality, durability, and brightness. I have pictures in my gallery of both the lights under the cabinets and ceiling in "My New Studio" album. I also have an Ott Light, but never need to turn it on now because of this lighting system. I also found out from my electrician the reason my recessed light bulbs (which are expensive) keep burning out. It is because of the heat they create in the tube (no air circulation) I did however put in three recessed lights behind my bar in my display shelfs to highlight my projects on display, but I hardly ever have these on because most of my classes are during the day, and I don't need to have them on when its just me there (I have looked at the projects long enough already). Just my recommendation, but go to my gallery to see what you think (a couple of the pictures were taken at night showing the lighting under the cabinets -- there is a main on/off switch on both wall for these lights and each light also has it's own individual on/off switch which is handy when you just have one person at a work station).

I have an overhead ceiling light and several lights placed on furniture around the room. I then use an Ott floor light over my main work station and it is wonderful for selecting the right colors at night time. I don't have a problem with shadows and I also take photos using this same light and it works great. I place the light at the side of my work station so it is shining down towards the top of my work station mat and then I angle the head a bit towards me. No shadows this way and I use it day and night!
without a doubt...........OTT all the way. I too am in a basement. it makes a world of a difference.
I love my Ott light too! I bought mine at Tuesday Mornings for $35.00! Love it!
I have two regular desk lamps on the ends of my table, but my Ott light is centered over the middle of my desk. It's perfect!
I reviewed the heck out of lights before I bought, and I knew I wanted an Ott light. I loved that I found one at Tuesday Mornings at a great price. Mine is a desk mount style, it could also be used on an easel. They come in several styles, just research what style will be best for your area.
I have a mixture of lights. There's a ceiling light with some pretty bright bulbs in it, and every table has it's own task light. Plus I have one of those standing lamps with five moveable arms on it.
It can get kind of warm in there with all the lights going, and I can't even imagine the impact it has on our electric bill! :rolleyes:
I have done two card rooms and I find the tracklighting a real bonus. Placing the track a little forward of your body works best. I also kept it away from the wall so that my spots didn't hit the shelving on my wall above my work stations. My second card room doesn't have track lighting but I used clamp on lamps that connect to my shelf. I used the goose neck type so that I can crank them where the lighting is best. Hope this helps. The clamp on lights I bought at Walmart for 8-9 dollars each. I was surprised at how well they do work for me. I use white bulbs in them. Using more than one helps so the lighting isn't spotty.

Thanks, I've been looking around a bit but I didn't know as much as you do. I'll go and take a look at the hardware store again to see what else there is nowadays. I've even asked an electrician his opinion on the light issue too.
With the OTT lamp, the light bulbs ONLY fit their lamps and if I get the same type of light bulb I can still use my current light fixtures and get reasonably priced bulbs/tubes for my craft room. I need energy efficent bulbs because I plan to spend a lot of time there.:-D
I have two bedrooms upstairs, similar size and location where I changed one room's bulbs and left the other as is. When both room's lights are on you can see the difference....... one is yellowish and the other is bright white light. Gotta see it to believe it!;)

I just got a new craft room downstairs (yay!!!) and my dad installed track lighting right above my workspace. They are incredibly bright, and yet it still has a nice warm feel ( I HATE Ott lights - sorry to all of you who like them :-D) Another nice thing about track lighting is it really blend in - no bulky lamps for me!!! Hope you get the perfect lights for your room!!!

Do you mean it falls closed???? I found that I could tighten the slotscrew on the side just a tad and it took care of the problem.
Wouldn't even want to craft with out my OTT's as they let me see the colors correctly.......but that is just MHO.
