Default Storage Solution for Markers............

One of my best online craft friends came up with this idea for marker storage and I ran with it:

The two "drawer sets" came from Michael's....got them on sale for $7.99 ea. (marked down from $14.99). I've removed three of the drawers and then I made dividers with black cardstock and chipboard for two of them. I will be using the drawers that I removed as organization drawers within large drawers, so they won't go to waste! Later on, as I purchase more Copics I will remove the fourth drawer and make the CS dividers.

Just thought I would share Teri's idea with you all!!!

Pam

Does anyone know if it is better to store markers vertical or horizontal? If vertical would you store them with the tip up or down?

... well mine is pretty simplistic but it works for me. I have a designated plastic mesh basket. the kind that you might have in your refrigerator or other places.

The actual differing marker types are laying in there each in their own zip-loc baggie. It's easy then to select the marker type you want to use, just lift out the baggie from the basket and there's your collection on your desk-top.

It depends on the marker as to how you store it. Traditional, dye or pigment-based double ended markers should be stored horizontally to prevent the one end from grabbing all the ink from the other end. Single tip dye or pigment-based markers should be stored tip down. Copics, due to the nature of the alcohol-based ink, can be stored either way. HTH.

Looks great! I have marker cases from CTMH and they hold 72 markers each but only thin sized markers.

Pam I did love yours. I think I need something I can pick up and take to other rooms with me. I don't stay in my stamp room.

I found a basket at Hobby Lobby that the marker stands that came with my two 72-piece sets fit in nicely with a little wiggle room. (The wiggle room is nice because I can stick my Sketch markers along the side.)

Kim that basket is perfect!! Did you take your stands with you or measure before you went? Love your stash of markers too.

Loretta the page was blank when I went to it. What item were you showing us?

I did measure before I bought the basket. Of course I never had anything with me to measure the baskets in the stores, but thankfully I was able to grab one from the art section and used that. The handles make picking it up so much easier. I can't for the life of me remember how much I paid for it. I want to say it was $9.99 - $14.99 and then purchased with a coupon.

You can also see in my photo that I wrote the marker number on the end of each marker with an ultra-fine permanent marker. Tedious to do but I sure am glad that I did. I tried the tiny stickers but the darn things fell off. (The good news is that I only put them on a few marker caps to see how well they adhered.)

I to have the Magpie Nesting Storage System for my Copics but it is pretty much filled. I think I'll show DH this and have him try making this. Maybe just a little smaller.
Thanks YorkieMoma and 1chrystal for the great ideas.

Deborah,

I too like to carry mine from room to room, especially since I don't have a designated "studio." I also love to sit in front of the TV and color, or color when we're traveling in the car. It keeps me from freaking out about the traffic and DH's terrible driving skills. hehehe After trying several options (Copic provided cases, Amuse Marker Bins, divided wood craft bin from Target), I'm finally thrilled with my latest solution. I picked it up at Michael's using a 50% off coupon. It came with three or four boxes for photos, but I'm using those for other things. I have all of the Copic colors (both Ciao and Sketch mixed in), and this is FINALLY a solution where I can have ALL of my markers in one place, and it's portable. And it still has room for the 12 new colors that Copic has just introduced and will be available next month!! I cut clear acrylic CS (PTI) to create the divisions between the colors. Hope this can help someone else!!

Karolyn I love your idea too! What is your carrier called a photo carrier? I am not sure I have seen these before. What section are they located in?
Also are they standing alone and not in a stand? Why I ask is because I only have 43 markers and they would tip over at this point if I put them in the carrier since I don't have enough to make them stand up.

I have both types of copics and I bought a copic rack and drat, it only only holds the sketch and not the ciaos. So if you have both, make sure the rack will hold both kinds.

Karolyn- my question is the same- when you remove a marker do they all stay in place or fall? I have mine in a decorated box and they all fit perfect BUT when I pull out say the 3 greens I want- they all fall down. I want mine to stay in place.
I might have to try the foam board thing........... if you made it a manageable size it could easily be moved.

I used the copic clear marker boxes, and absolutely hated them. I had to move 4 cases of ciao's and the 72 case (not full!) of sketches to where ever I wanted to colour at. I couldn't mix & match ciao's and sketches properly!

My new foam board box is 10" x 13" approximately. Its quite portable, and VERY sturdy. DH & I are quite surprised how sturdy it is. Mostly its so sturdy because of the way we made the shelves & dividers. They are all the full length/height of the box, but have slits in them so they slide together. It's hard to explain other than its made like the inserts in a case of bottled beer. I can't take the shelves/dividers out to get a picture either since dh hot glued the whole thing together.

I'm so sorry that I didn't see this sooner!

I found the container in the section where there are lots of different scrapbooking storage solutions. It had three or four boxes inside that they called "Photo Boxes."

The markers are not standing inside a stand - they are standing alone. But they only stay upright because I have so many markers. I think I have a little over 300 markers, so this is the first storage solution that I've found that holds ALL of the markers in one container. All the other options that I tried previously, I had to have two to three containers, and it was so difficult to transport them.

For those that don't have enough markers to make them stand upright on their own, you could create a cardboard, velcro divider, use the available space for other crafting tools, and remove those tools as your collection expands. Just a thought . . .

Hope this helps!

I might have to try the foam board thing........... if you made it a manageable size it could easily be moved.
The markers stay in place perfectly when I pull one or two out, and they don't fall over at all, but only because there are so many markers in the container.

Hi! I was just looking through this thread. You've probably already found a storage solution you like and by now have a LOT more Copics, BUT...
It occurs to me it you put either chicken wire in the bottom or Styrofoam it would help keep your markers upright when you took out your markers. Also, the home improvement store sell sheet of plastic grid that could be cut down for this purpose too. Especially if you're like me and want to keep them in a particular order. Just a thought.

It's great to see everyone's solution for their markers.

My Copic Marker collection is still growing. So I've gotten a Container from Target. It's green with a lid that locks.

I do own some of he other markers that were cheaper than Copic ones. But those are going to be put in another container.

So this way all my copics will be in one place.

Thanks for all of the ideas. Maybe I will store my colored pencils this way.
