shadowing an image

Okay I have been playing with m y copics with certain images and I am starting to understand them better thanks to everyones help! One more question. Does anyone else have the problem of know WHERE to shade. I have tried imagining the light source and such but I think my simple brain is having problems with it. I can't quite figure out where to place the shadows...anyone else have this problem??

I have not figured out the art of shadowing yet either...maybe someday I will get it...good luck to you.

I just pick a side or angle.

If you choose, for example, the upper right corner to be the angle at which your light source is coming, then the shadows would fall opposite, towards the lower left.

If you are shading multiple objects, stick to the same side you chose on the first image you shaded.

That's just a general suggestion, tho. I have zero formal art training and am not Certified.

Google images is your friend! If you're having problems imagining the shading on an object, you can take the imagining out of it by looking at the real thing. Almost anything you have as a stamped image you're likely to be able to find a similar image online of the real thing - study the pic and see what's going on with the light and shade. Once you've done a few, you'll probably find the whole light source thing clicks in your head and you'll be able to do it without thinking

I'm no art major either...that's why I usually just shade the left side and the bottom.

You can also draw faint lines in pencil - start at the imagined light source, and draw to the edges of your object and beyond. The shadow will be between the lines. This is a drawing tutorial I've used before - it has shadow techniques in it. Skim through it all
