TLC40 - Faux Silk
TLC40 - Faux Silk
This week's TLC is completely inspired by stampin-sunnychick's NOVVSNG challenge. If you have already made one for the VSN, you know how much fun this technique is! If not, I didn't want you all to miss it!
You can see tons of great inspiration by typing NOVVSNG into the search box in the gallery.
Here's mine:
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Complete directions and another sample can be found here:
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
As always, if you have questions, please ask. If you have suggestions, please share!
When you upload, please put TLC40 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread.
If you need help uploading or posting a link to this thread, check out this link:
Forums at Splitcoaststampers
If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us STAMPIN' !!

What a cool technique! Hmmm, I have to decide what to do... my Xyron machine isn't that big. I'll have to dig up some clear glue!

Here's my card! I wasn't sure what glue to use so I used Mod Podge to adhere the tissue paper and it made the ink bleed and the red turn all orangey. Whoops! I used the background anyway, but I will try again later in the week, because this was fun. Thanks Beth!

WOW! I have done a similar technique using freezer paper, but never knew it was called Faux Silk. If you want to try the freezer paper method, you just iron the stamped, crumpled tissed to the shiny side of the freezer paper, then cut pieces to desired sizes. I used to do this all the time and use the envy templates with the "silk" to make gorgeous envelopes! Try it!

Here's the instructions that I had typed up for VSN...HTH...
The instructions: (Aubrey made me type them! )
DO NOT FREAK IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING ON MY SUPPLY LIST. Just wipe away the tears and use a Kleenex in place of the tissue paper. PLEASE JUST HAVE FUN & BE CREATIVE with your substitutions
1) First cut your cardstock to desired size (2" X 4" or whatever you choose). Your tissue paper should be cut no less than 1/2 " larger than your cardstock. (The tissue will be wrapped around the cardstock and glued to the backside of it.)
2) Now "trash" your tissue paper...Ok, just crumple it repeatedly (2-3x at least).
3) Next straighten the tissue paper and stamp your image on the tissue paper.
Tip #1: To create a shadow effect stamp about 1/4" to 1/2" beside the first stamped image.
4) Coat your cardstock with your adhesive (VIP~VERY IMPORTANT~must use a stick o' glue) completely.
5) Now adhere your tissue loosly to the cardstock.
Tip #2: You want to leave some wrinkles in the cardstock this gives the faux silk illusion and the stick o' glue helps with that process.
6) Now glue the the edges to the back of the cardstock and adhere to your card or background.
TOTALLY OPTIONAL: Embellish to your liking...I like to embellish as you can see in my gallery.

Those instructions might be a bit much...
So here's the short version...
Cut a piece of cardstock to the size you would like to use & tissue large enough to fit cover the CS. Crumple up your tissue paper like you would to throw it away. Straighten the paper and crumple again. This creates the look for the faux silk...Now completely cover your piece of CS with a glue stick. Next step is to adhere your tissue to the CS...Leave some wrinkles in the tissue while smoothing it out over the CS. Now stamp on the tissue...Voila! Faux Silk
Maybe that is a little easier to understand. As I have said before I despise directions so I totally understand your confusion...Hugs and I hope that helps ya! If you still have questions just ask!
I feel so special to have this weeks challenge as my VSN challenge. WOO HOO, thanks Beth! You ROCK, GF!

I am back....after being away for a month w/my new little grand daughter. I used the zyron for this, but I think the glue might work better. I will have to try one w/the glue stick next. However, I do love this technique.
Here is my first attempt, and I think it is still pending:

I just uploaded my sample, but it's pending approval...just search on TLC40 to get it. My scanner is CRAP! It didn't pick up the texture of the main piece at all. :( Still love this technique though, and will be doing more of them in the very near future. Thanks for the inspiration Beth!

Silk Hearts
I made two cards tonight. Love this technique. (I now have a reason for the huge supply of glue sticks from Office Depot) I like how the tissue paper sort of "crackles" the design if you stamp first and glue it down after -- especially on the more solid of the two hearts. It adds a new texture.

Here is my Faux Silk Birthday card
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Okay - there are a ton of peeps who used RIW with floral together...so I have to give a "hollah hollah" to those ladies before me who are STAMPIN' GODESSES! HOLLAH HOLLAH! I actually went back and started to list them ALL out...but nap time is short and I can hardly give credit to everyone without possibly leaving someone out....but to Jus Colorado, Stampersharon and stampalicious, along with dorinda and anyone else who used this combo before me - ROCK ON WITH YOUR BAD SELVES!!!!

Here are my two attempts at the Faux Silk. It was a fun technique! I found wrapping around the rectangle much easier than the oval, though. Also, I found that the tissue paper I used even soaked up pigment ink almost immediately (thus the vellum square on the Christmas card).
