What trimmer/cutter do you use?

I am ready to chuck my 12" fiskars trimmer out the window...tired of uneven cuts!
Just wondering which trimmer the majority uses. Right now I'm thinking of getting a Premeir 18" cutter.

I JUST got my Carl Cutter.... I've been using the rotary one from Fiskars that I bought at Costco when I first started stamping in November of last year.

But, I do use the one the SU sells for smaller paper and for getting that 1/8" border around the stamped images.

To be perfectly honest.... I just opened the package. Maybe I will try tonight and let you know what the difference is. When I opened it, I was trying to figure out how to use it! I'm such a dork sometimes!

I am using a Fiskars cutter also and I notice that it cuts unevenly too. However, it works better if you slide from bottom to top.

I am thinking about getting another cutter too. My sister and I have joint custody of the card supplies and sometimes we need another cutter. Since I am a SU! demo, I thought I'd just get the SU! model. Can anyone comment on how it works???

I like the little SU! cutter. It is accurate for the most part and I can measure things that are more narrow than other cutters will cut. I like that about it. I just needed more than that for workshops and such...it only cuts one sheet at a time accurately. I did just cut 48 pieces of cardstock with it for the cards I will be doing at my workshop tomorrow night and it really did fine! They were all thin and small pieces.

My big Fiskars Rotary one serves me one purpose while the little one from SU! serves another. They are both good.... as far as I'm concerned. But, yes, the little one sometimes doesn't cut straight. And it you can tell where it's been cut cause the paper goes into the little groove.

With the large one, you can go a while without having to turn the little mat piece where the paper is cut. I've cut A LOT of paper and I just barely had to turn it last week! AND there are 4 sides to that piece!

I have the 12 inch fiskers cutter and it cuts uneven sometimes. I just thought it was me, like maybe I was in too big of a hurry and did'n't line it up good. It may be cutting uneven all the time I just may may not notice it in some projects. How does the SU! 12 inch cutter cut? What is the Carl Cutter? I've seen people post talking about it, what is so different and does it cut straight?

I LOVE my Carl Cutter. It goes through a bunch of paper at once (8 - 10 sheets). I just have to make sure I have everything straight. If there is a downside to the Carl cutter, it wiould be that trimming to less than an inch is beyond my ability. But I almost forgot, I also have the CM personal cutter, and that's great for little cutting. My fiskars rotary cutter now just has the scoring blade in. And the SU one is great for trimming out to make a border.
Plese don't let dh realize that I have 4 cutters - and desperately need each one!

I was wondering the same thing about the Carl Cutters. I REALLY dislike my smaller fiskars. I have the larger, rotary blade one too. It just doesn't cut multiple papers very well. Thanks for the info!! :lol:

I must have about 5 cutters.

Fixkar small ones: fine for little pieces and one-at-a-time jobs; need to have 2 cutters on hand, because one is for white paper (with newest blade, otherwise US White feathers on the edges), and one for colored cardstock (when the white feathers, it still works great on colored card stock.)

Fiskars rotary: ready for the trash

Carl cutter: WONDERFUL! It does big jobs. It does thick jobs! It is straight. It just doesn't do itty bitty pieces.

A good friend of mine has a carl cutter and she thinks that it's great! I'm slowly coming around to her opinion. I'm really used to my fiskars but, hate that I can't cut a staight edge with it! I'm thinking of getting one of the small carls for myself.

I have the Fiskars 12" Rotary Paper Trimmer and I love it! I can cut up to 10 pieces of cardstock at a time, which is the most I ever do at one time anyway. I have cut a lot of cardstock and still haven't changed the blade or the cutting strip. I think for the price that it is, it is definitely worth it. It retails for $70-80 but costco sells them for under $30-and it comes with 4 blades!

I have the big Fiskars rotary which I use for prepping for classes and all my ordinary stuff. Then I have the small one for demonstrating.

I have found one thing that has greatly improved the straightness of my cuts on the small one. Put just one finger on the blade to slide it and push down as you slide. You will cut straight this way. When you grasp the handle of the blade, you tend to twist and push it from side to side as you cut, which makes your cuts crooked. Try it!

I also ordered a Carl's cutter based on the recs from this site. It has been great; can cut many sheets of cardstock at one time and matboard so easily. If you are a demo or you cut much matboard, it is definitely worth the investment!

I like the newest blue fiskar's cutter. I guess it has been out for several months now, but its new for me. It cuts better and more evenly than the black one like SU sells.

just 2 cents... this may be a coincedence, BUT I have found that the times that my Fiskers doesn't cut straight (of courtse it's not me!!!) is when the end is off the table. I get a straight line everytime as long as the whole darn thing is on the table!

I got a Carl cutter off of QVC.com for about $30. It cam with a regualr straight blade, deckle and victorian blades. It cuts MUCH better than my Fiskars did.

I have the 12 inch Fiskars and the little SU cuttter. Personally, I really like my Fiskars and only have problems when I need to change t he blade. I like that I can use it to score and cut. The little cutter is great, but I don't use it as much, just like to have it for tiny pieces. Since I am doing all these cards for the military personnel, though, I may have to check out this Carl Cutter you are all talking about!

I use a quillotine style paper cutter that I bought at Office Max about 2 years ago and it is wonderful. I think I paid about $30 -$35.00 for it. It's super easy to line your cardstock up to the correct measurement and always gives a great cut. But, then again, maybe I like this type best because of all my years as a teacher (that's the kind we have at school) Anyone else use this type cutter? Oh, and I take the one SU sells when I do workshops or go to a crop. Maybe SU will come out with a different cutter in the new catty.

I have the huge Fiskers rotary trimmer and it cuts great for me - It has a grid system so you just make sure your paper is lined up straight and cut away...

For smaller pieces I use my Creative Memories personal trimmer and I love that - it also has a grid system so it is easy to cut thing to just the right size - you can pick up something similar to the CM one at Micheals but I have a few friends who have had those and end up ditching them for the CM one - heavier plus you get a cut little drawre to stash all your odds and ends.

Okay, I'm confused. Is there a different cutter that SU sells? I thought it was just the fiskars cutter. I just bought mine at Michaels'. I absolutely hate it! I've wasted so many sheets of cardstock because I can't get a straight cut no matter what I do! And I'm always getting jaggedy edges too!

I'm tempted to order the Carl cutter you all keep talking about, and I've checked it out, I just don't know if I can afford the price tag. Are you all talking about the heavy duty cutters that sell for around $90 or are you talking about the personal cutters that sell for around $45-50?

I love my Carl Cutter. I can cut paper for 50 cards in no time at all. Wish it cut the small cuts though. Everafter Arts are great to work with. Linda

I did! Till I met CARL! I read about them on SUDSOL, and got to try one out. Ordered it right away, and it has not left my side since! I got the fancy blades for it, and have never used them. I have 2 fiskars that go to workshops.

But for massive cutting. . .you can't beat the Carl. And with kids around, much safter than the guillotine I used to have. My kids love to cut paper, too, and I can leave the Carl out on my table for them to use, too!

I love my carl cutter !!!!! I use my small fiskars for scoring and sometimes small cuts. I did have a fiskars rotary cutter at one time but in no way does it compare to the carl cutter. You will never regret owning a carl cutter.

You guys are going to get me in trouble!
I have a terrible (or wonderful depending on how you look at it) collection of cutters already. My husband would cringe if he saw me reading this conversation. I have several of the 12 in. one in the catalog, 2 of the smaller one we used to sell, 2 of the fiskars mounted rotary cutters, one of the handheld rotary cutter, and a guillotine. I now I *need* the Carl Cutter. How am i going to "slip that by him"?

If I had three wishes I might use one of them to create the perfect cutter, able to cut through anything - but never crooked, perfectly accurate and easy to read measurements - but can cut the tiniest pieces. Alas, I have not found any bottles containing genies, if you happen to find one please put in my request.

I used to use the Carl Cutter which is fun to use however it seemed to need blade replacements far too often -- was costing a small fortune in blades. And if you used the decorative trim blade it destroyed the cutting mat.
I switched to the large Friskers rotary cutter (Costco) about 18 mos ago and it took awhile getting used to it but it cuts perfectly (the first one from Costco had to be returned as there was a problem with it). The replacement rotary blades for the Friskers are much cheaper than the Carl and you can find them everywhere. Also, the cutting mat for the Friskers lasts much longer than the Carl.

Well now I am more confused (happens very easily) than before. LOL
At my DH suggestion I went out and bought a new blade and cutting mat for my Fiskars 12" and it seems to be working perfectly. Nice clean straight perfect cuts...go figure.
I will be keeping my eyes open for a good sale on a Carl cutter though....most of you seem to love this cutter.
