Lightbulb Copic Color Close-Enoughs

This thread is an attempt to help people know which copic colors are so close that you probably only need one of them in your collection. So please post when you discover Close-Enoughs.

Ok...the title is Close Enoughs...I am assuming this means close enough if you don't wanna spend $5 on another marker, but not exact.

Here are the ones I have that are alike:
R12 & R20
R21 & R32
G21 & G24 & YG63 & G94
C2 & N2
C3 & N3 (higher gray #'s DO differ more)
YR21 & Y23
BG000 & B000
B34 & B45 & B95
B41 & B91
E02 & YR00 & R12
YR07 & YR68
G12 & YG41
G28 & G29
RV11 & R83

Ok...before anyone disagrees and says these are not the same...they are NOT the same. They are CLOSE ENOUGH. LOL

BG13 Mint Green and BG15 Aqua are soooo close! If you're choosing between the two, I'd pick BG13.

This could be a really helpful thread for those just starting to consider color choices.

I am just starting to buy copics so I am subscribing to this thread. My dh will love the fact that I can save some money because I am a completer. If there are 322 colors available then, I want 322 colors, but if they are almost the same then, I don't feel the need to have them. KWIM

So am I, a completer. I spent all of yesterday researching these, reading all the copic chatter thread, well, most of it, and then ilikemarkers.com and I too realized even after being told that many are the same and or you can go up 2 to 3 shades for blending between colors and get the desired color you are looking for in between.

I am working on my first order and I took the suggestion of ordering the colors in a magna wallet set that was helped to be created by ilikemarkers (Marianne) who seems to be a PROFESSIONAL at not only copics but art.

Therefore, those are on my list, a blender, the glitter set because a girl loves glitter, and the opaque paint because I saw her do some neat artwork with it and I want it. DBF is giving me more $$ (well, I told him how much I needed to get started but I'm adding to the start set, he doesn't need to know that) for these and I'm SO thankful to him. I did have to do some whining. But he said go ahead. Ahhh.........that was even AFTER he gave my a Valentines early, a gorgeous glass necklace that is heart shaped with red and gold swirled in it. They seem to be new and if I really knew more info, I'd tell you but what I do know for sure is it's beautiful and I love it!!! I'd told him if he ever wanted to get me anything I really liked the one of a kind (go figure) idea of these necklaces and I liked the red one in the ad. He told me he went to buy it (early even, so not like him) and it wasn't on display. Each store got ONE and another person had it on hold but had not been back in the timeframe allowed so she was selling it to him and she was upset they ran the ad with that particular necklace in it because everyone has been asking for it BUT I got it!!

Okay, I got a lil giddy there..........just feeling HAPPY right now bout my soon to be copic purchase........

Missinkyfingers, sounds like your Feb. is off to a great start!!! How exciting.
So how many copics are you getting? Excluding the glitter - which I love.

G21 & G24

Maybe it's just my eyes, but I have them colored on 2 different papers, and G24 is just a shade darker than G21. I believe they are "close enough" that you could get away with buying G21 and layer it to get G24.

IT IS.....finally, a break for me. I'm broke financially AT the moment BUT I'm getting a new job, a raise, and hopefully they will still give me my bonus even though I'm moving postions 2 wks before pay out date, I save $600/mo just in parking, and I've no idea how much in gas but 20 less miles per day so it's a win-win for me all around. I've been in much better spirits this month and it's a nice change for me.

Let's see, what am I getting? That's where you (all) come in. I know so far that I am getting the colors suggested in post #275 I believe. The set seems to be a great starter set and if I heard correctly, Marianne (ilikemarkers) had a hand in helping put it together. Given what I've seen by here, totally trust her!! I'm adding to that the opaque paint I saw her use as well, it made a totally awesome piece of art on the blog I read and thought it'd be awesome for snow.

My dilemma is that I can still buy a few more, not sure of the exact # yet but not sure which ones so to begin with I've gone through and tried to match up SU colors (I know it's been mentioned here time and time again but since I need it I can't find the post that will lead me to the SU comparison chart, thought I'd seen post 2 mentioned several times but I'm mistaken or looking in the wrong place still) and then I'm going to compare that to what I'm actually getting in my starter kit and also refer to a thread I found today "close enough" copics. I'm limited in how many I can get so for my beginning, I want to get as many as I can to get the most colors I can. I use a lot of the bold brights, like pinks, blues, purples but I want to make more manly ones and nature like cards (FINALLY got Lovely as a tree and so many beautiful cards with it). I want to do people, snowmen, snowflakes, bridal/wedding stuff too.

These are the ones I'm thinking............suggestions, best/worst/don't need....

R14 Light Orange
B16 Cyaanine Blue
E29 Burnt Umber
B34 Manganese Blue
B45 Smoky Blue
B79 Iris
Y09 Lettuce Green (really want to do good grass)
B11 Moon White
RV06 Cerise
E57 Walnut (want to do good deers (noble deer))
RV14 Begonia Pink
YR68 Orange
V06 Viloet
BV08 Blue Violet
E77 Maroon
V15 Mallow
RV Dark Pink

What do you think?

Ok you asked what I think...LOL

Personally, I think you have chosen a lot of DARK colors. I would for sure go lighter since more layers will make it look darker. Unless you already have all the lighter shades...I really wouldn't start with the dark ones you listed:

E29 Burnt Umber
B79 Iris
E57 Walnut (For deer I would go with more of E35-37 than this)
BV08 Blue Violet
E77 Maroon
RV Dark Pink

And B34 Manganese Blue & B45 Smoky Blue are an awful lot alike, until you have many other colors, I would choose something else.

I have about 180 markers now, and in all honesty, I could do without about 30 of my darker ones...and I have very few of the darkest of any color.

And if you still need the SU chart...I have one on my blog:

Default Copic color wheel

Thanks for this post!!! I have made a note of all of the similars......

Here is a color wheel from the Copic library
http://www.copicmarker.com/updated%2...%20VERSION.pdf

I read somewhere that colors that are adjacent to each other are very similar in color- not sure where I read that......but, if you look at this chart, then two colors that meet at corners are very similar- some examples:
V01-V12
R12 and R21 then R21 is adjacent to R32 and R30

check it out- some of the mention similar colors are not close to each other though- so I am subscribing to save $$$ (I am a completer too- new description buy I like that!).

Thanks for starting this thread!

I wanted to let this thread know that I started another thread called "Copic Color Close-Enoughs". I still can't figure out how to post threads neatly so there is the big long thread Forums at Splitcoaststampers

It is a great place to post look alike colors.

AWESOME, thank you!! You made some good points. When I was picking the colors, I was forgetting that I can color more to darken. These are going to be something that takes a bit of learning. Financially I can't afford to make too many boo-boo's with them that's why I'm trying to take so much time to learn about them and get my best possible first batch. Thank you so much for those suggestions AND the SU link.

Should I go a few or several shades lighter in those colors above that I picked that are too dark?

I SO appreciate all your help here!!

I read that too so I think you are correct. I find the wheel difficult to read and I found a chart yesterday but I'm not sure it's going to tell me what colors are adjacent. I may need to refer the wheel and make notes on the chart.

I like the "completer" term too.......

If you really like those dark colors, I would just choose the next lighter marker...which I am pretty sure on all of those is at least 2 numbers lower.

I think you need dark colors just as much as you need light colors, but you use them much more sparingly. Dark colors add deep contrast, which many bright cheery pictures are lacking. However, a little dab 'll do ya. I run my light colors dry all the time, but I wouldn't live without my dark colors to make the light colors seem to jump out all the more.

This post explains it clearly for all the newbies trying to choose colors. HTH!

Cher and Marianne

Thank you both for your suggestions AND the tutorial on lighter colors. I think you're both right, to begin with I need lighter colors (I was afraid b/c they're SO light) but I needed to remember I can color over and over them to get a darker color.

I've been working on which ones to get for like 2 days now, haha!!! I do the same thing when I order my stamp sets.......in the beginning I'd ordered ones I'd never use, etc. so I learned to really research what I'm buying. Seems kinda silly that a set looks so cute but I gotta see if it's REALLY cute. KWIM.

It's fun though, I'm having fun picking my colors!! I can't wait to get home and play with the color chart I printed today and review going to the lighter colors of what I want.

Those aren't the only ones I'm getting they are just in addition to the Magna Wallet set put together from a post I read in another thread "copic chatter" and I believe many of those are light colors with a few darks......at least tonight I'll have a real color comparsion chart with that set and what else I'd like to get.

DBF is hopefully going fishing this weekend (how sad is it that I don't even care he might leave me on V-day, heck already got my gift , but I'm hoping to have these by then so I can play!!!

Not to hijack...but anyone thinking about colors that are NOT alike when they SHOULD be??? I mean like a sequence of colors that really don't work??

G14: NOT at all like G12 and G16...it's really limey when they are softer

YR14: It's not in between YR12 and YR16...it's got a golden tint rather than the soft pretty orange tint of the others

That's the problem that I run into with some of the browns. My E30, E31 and E33 don't look like they're meant to go together.

I could see myself being dragged to one of those, haha!! This past weekend I joined him to the magic store and then was harassed (friendly like) about learning all his tricks. In the car he asked what I heard and I said I kept myself pretty occupied reading this and that and then I said ALSO, I've got alot of copic information and ideas running through my head right now so not listening to you all so much. Hahaha..........lately I think we're quite a pair.

These are the things that start to get me confused and why I feel I really need ALL the colors but I also know it's likely not necessary. Specifically for somene like me who does not have much time to stamp (slacking on schoolwork right now even) or in general the consensus seems to be that you do not need EVERY color.

You can also find the SU comparison charts here. I like her site because she colors a lot of different images. I look at something she's colored and see what colors she used then check to see if I have the markers. She does House Mouse and I need those colors...gonna get them first. Her work is amazing. I wouldn't just try to pick out colors. I'd look at images and see what colors they've used. You'd get more of an idea as to what the color looks like with other colors. I could never just pick colors off of a chart. I have to see it in action. I'm one of those people that fills her cart up, empties it, re-thinks...over and over and over again. Reckon that's why no one likes to go shopping with me?

Anyhow...check out this site. I have a pen and paper with me right now taking notes from her...colors I want and need. Good luck:-)

That's a good idea too...........didn't think about that as I didn't really think about the colors being listed for specific images.

Thank you for that idea.

I'm not usually a cart filler and emptier when out shopping IRL but online, YOU BET!! Wonder why that is?

I thought this would help:

http://papercanoes.blogspot.com/2009...son-chart.html

At least you can make comparisons yourself instead of taking my word for it...and if you have your own chart to compare colors I don't have, you might get a good idea of what is similar and what's not.

What do you think?

first, congrats on your new job
I'm a little late in responding here, but I have V15 and I think it's kind of ugly, actually. Wish I hadn't bought it! Now we all have different tastes, for sure...but looking at the cap and samples, I thought I'd like it. I think it's supposed to be like Orchid Opulence (??) but it's a lot DULLER IMO.
Just some feedback.
Maybe you've already mentioned this in a later post, if so I apologize: I also agree that there are a lot of dark colors here, and you haven't gotten any blending groups. To me, that's the main reason to fork over the money for Copics--to blend. If you just want nice, solid colors, you'd be fine with the SU markers, KWIM?
Also, several of the Bic Markits (at Target--bigger set) and even Sharpies match SU colors, and they are nice deep colors. So, again, you could do with that if you just want nice colors and don't plan to shade.
Just sharing my limited experience! I am not an expert by ANY means...

I love this idea (that's how I got V09, from the blog that starts with a "K" mentioned on the Copic thread...I don't want to butcher it, but it's something like Kiyomi)...unfortunately, A LOT of people don't list the actual colors they use. I know I end up grabbing a lot, and don't keep track myself...
