Altered jars

I have looked all over the forum and the gallery and I don't see any painted tops on any altered jars. Everyone seems to cover them with paper and ribbon. Has any one tried painting metal lids with craft paint? Does it just peel off or can you prime it with some thing?

I haven't painted lids on metal jars but I have painted metal tins. I sand them first and I seal the paint with Modge Podge. Works great for me. The paint doesn't come off and has stayed nice. HTHs. It should work for a lid the same way.

I sometimes cover metal with alcohol inks. That might be an idea for you that would be less work.

I tried painting them with acrylic paint, but yes, the paint chips right off. I did have better luck spray-painting them with gold Krylon. Sort of a pain, since I had to take them outside, spray, let dry, but it worked.

I can see why others just use paper/ribbon.

try your local library. i have many books for gifts in jars. each jar& lid is altered in some way.
i know one book is jazzy jars

if you use gesso the paint will "hold".

Did you sand the lids first and/or cover in Modge Podge or something similar? It works great when I do that and I haven't ever had a problem.

No, I just applied the paint over the lid--probably not a good idea in hindsight.

I have a question along the same vein. I have some starbucks bottles and they have a code number stamped right on the glass (there is also a lable, but this code isn't on any lable). Is there a way to get that off, or am I stuck with it?

I use nail polish remover to remove the black stamped code number. The Goo Gone I use to remove the sticky from the label won't take it off at all.

I just scrub it off with a green scrubbie - works like a charm.

I use rustoleum (sp?) spray paint to paint my lids and have never had a problem.
