I'm hooked on quilling!!!

So it is snowing, nothing better to do than stamp stamp stamp and QUILL!!! I am totally enjoying this. Here are a few of my creations from this morning.

My first scrapbook page had this pretty quilled flower design on it. I love it!!! I also did a HUGE Sunflower on a page of my DD. It took me 4 days and several hours/each day to quill all of the pieces. I loved the finished product. As soon as the gallery is back up to all of us, I'll upload them.

I have a friend that has tons of quilling stuff for sale on ebay. SCRAPCUTS is the store name. The tools is above all overs!! I taught for her and I could teach any age, any hand size and your fingers don't get sore. She has great prices and colors...

i love the look of quilling but havent tried it as of yet, looks like something that is pretty portable to take with you to do. I am wondering if the gals who are doing it buy books with patterns, how to's or just make up your own designs ? If you buy books can you suggest a good one for a beginner?

My friend bought a quilling strip cutter recently and I know it was quite pricey. can you use cardstock for the quilling or do you have to use a thinner paper? I've seen quilling but haven't tried it yet because I really don't need to get sucked into something that will take more of my time and money. LOL

Those cards are gorgeous. I love the poinsettia one the most! I'm curious how long these cards took, just the morning, including all of the quilling?

I love quilling and the SU! papers work great. I cut the strips with my guillotine cutter and they are straight most of the time. :^) I get ideas from internet sites and books. I can quill at the kids sporting events and when I get a few moments in front of the tv (I can't just sit and do nothing with my hands). I have not tried to mail my creations yet but I assume you'ld need extra postage.

Several years ago, when my girls were babies, I did a lot of quilling. All I had was paper, toothpicks and glue. You really don't need a tool, just your fingers! I used the toothpick to apply the glue. I only had white paper and if I needed a little color, I used a crayon and rubbed it over the top of the finished work. Those were the days of NO budget for hobbies. I found it very relaxing and fun. One Christmas everyone in my family and DH's family got quilled snowflake ornaments for gifts. (No budget for gifts, either! )

It really isn't that time-consuming. I think it took me about an hour to do each snowflake, but they were about 4 to 6 inches in diameter and had a lot of different pieces. The little pieces that you would put on a card wouldn't take any time at all!

These are stunningly beautiful!! Excellent work, and a great job incorporating the designs into the cards.

Quilling is not hard, nor is it more time-consuming than any other hobby worth having! We all make time to do the things we enjoy.

I used to quill as a teenager, and my mom probably still has a box of my quilling stuff and my creations. I'll have to go find them!

I asked for a quilling tool and pre-cut quilling papers for Christmas last year. It's actually very relaxing, so you don't tend to realize that it can be time consuming.

My only real quilled craft to date is a shadow box I made for my Grandmother's 80th birthday. I don't have it on the computer at work but I'll try to remember to attach the thumbnail when I get home.

I would love a paper fringer now (but they're oh so expensive)! THAT is one task that is way too time-consuming...

I started quilling in the late '60's and did decorated wedding invitations to order. Still do them to-day. Have tried quilling on cards and like the look. Your cards are lovely. I noticed in the scrapbook store that they sold ready made pieces (flowers, snowflakes etc.) but they were rather expensive. A sleeve of mixed papers and a corsage pin will last a long time. It's a great craft to use on your cards. I'm glad it's starting to come back.

It reminds me of my grandma! She used to do paper quilling alot and alot of it. She had the quilling tool, which I think I might have come to think of it. She would use her own paper if she wanted different paper, like paper from magazines, programs, etc. She also used tooth picks and tacky glue. I remember showing me how to do it and doing it with her but that's been a long time ago. It is fun from what I remember.

Actually, if my grandma were living yet I think she would have a blast with this card making and scrapbooking stuff. She used to make cards out of old cards or whatever and she did tons of scrapbooking. Even some of the boxes she used to make them too out of scrap paper. Now, if I just had a little more of her talent and craftiness that would be great!

I love to quill, also! I use my SU stylus to twirl my paper! I use my straight cut paper shredder to cut the paper into strips!!! Much easier than trying to cut straight peices of very thin paper with my paper cutter! I got started with a book from my library on paper crafts! I have a quilled scrap page in my gallery that I did for an ABC technique book!

A GREAT beginner (and FUN) book for quilling is "Twirled Paper" by Jacqueline Lee. It is one of the KLUTZ books and comes with everything you need - quilling strips, tool, glue, google eyes, etc! I made many cards based on the animals in the book a while back - before I knew about SCS. I don't have the cards anymore or I'd upload them. I love to quill as well. It is appears tedious but is actually very relaxing.Here is my scrapbook page I entered in the State Fair and won Best of Show. Took a couple days but well worth it....

Kiki, your card is beautiful--I've never done one that detailed. Did some snowflakes for ornaments that took some time, but the results are well worth it. I really enjoy quilling, and when you don't have many stamps, it's a great way to add interest to your cards. Here are 3 of mine:

You can also find the Klutz book at Michaels stores and use a coupon. I've gotten into quilling in the past few months and love it. It's very simple. Now I just have to go back to stamping.

Thanks! For the most part, I hand deliver the cards I've quilled - unless they are going in a box with a package. I think the really thin quilling strips would make it through the mail. Some shapes are more fragile than others -- like the "neck" on the snail in my unfrogettable card would be more likely to get flattened than any part of the dragonfly. You could always send them using a bubble wrap mailer - although it would cost more.

For any quilled or punch-ins, I've used the small boxes the USPS has. It's a little more expensive, but at least the card doesn't get crushed after all your hard work! Has anyone received or heard of how the cards survived regular mail? It would sure be less expensive!

I love this book, it just has the most fabulous funky designs in it. A friend and I have just taught 3 classes in quilling and whilst it is not my favorite thing to do, I do like it when I want a change, or like teabag folding, when I want to do something mindless.
We had little old ladies making black widow spiders and bugs. Bofore now, I have made rockets and diggers for boys and tutus, tiaras and wands for girls. A good site is www.quilledcreations.com, their little booklets are amazing if you have young friends of your kids to make cards for.
I must get my cards back from my friend so I can submit my cards to my gallery.
Your cards are beautiful though, I'm definitely going to case a few of them!

I too quill, i have sent alot of cards in a padded envie with the card wrapped in tissue paper. For the most part the design is not as fragile as you might think. I've made hundreds of cards and have never heard of one being destroyed yet. I also do the wedding pictures but they are framed. Its deffinetly an art. It does take some time to make all the individual petals the same. Its very relaxing for me.
