Daven, I just received this email and I am very disappointed and unhappy with SCS.

Hi, this is Justin Ethington with Volt Marketing Research and I’m writing because you previously participated in a stamping survey from Split Coast Stampers or Simple Scrapbooks magazine.
I wanted to let you know I'm the lead researcher on a new, non-stamping study and I'm looking for 1000 women to evaluate a new anti-aging cream from a high-end cosmetics brand. We pay you $40 to sample the cream (it retails for $55 but we mail you a sample free) and answer an online survey. This is for valid research only. We are not selling anything, joining the panel is free, and we don't spam you with offers or make you jump through hoops for payment.
If you are interested, please join our skin-care consumer panel at www.xxxxxxxxxxx.com. When you sign up you will answer questions about your skin type to see if you qualify to participate.
You can contact me at XXX-XXX-XXXX or xxxxxxxxxxxx if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Justin Ethington
Founder, Volt Marketing Research
PS: This is a one-time email notice only and you won't get ongoing email from me.
Info about our skin-care panel: www.xxxxxxxx.com Info about me: www.xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Is this what we have to look forward to now? Our email addresses being sold?
I won't be participating in any more members survey here, due to this.
Location: Moving home to Kiwiland sometime soon, I hope! Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada until then.

I got one too. I just forwarded it to Daven to ask him if it's legit.
If SCS have actually sold the names, and this is not a phising venture (ie this company is using the SCS name illegally to trick us), it's probably a sign of the times now that SCS has been sold.

That is sitting in my spam box right now. I will be pretty disappointed if that company got my email from SCS. I do have to note though-- that name (Volt) is associated in my mind with a survey that came from SU. Does anyone else remember that or am I having a senior moment (Waayyyy early!)?

I agree with Julia....seems Volt was someone who SU! used. Also the email says Simple Scrapbooks, so if you ever filled out one of their surveys (I haven't and haven't received this email, and I did fill out the SCS one), this may be where it came from. Just a thought.

Yes, Stampin' Up! uses Volt Marketing for their Customer Panel Surveys. I filled out the SCS survey as well, but have not received anything in my email regarding it.
Neither Jenn or Daven are online currently, but I'm sure they'll respond as soon as they get online.

I've never filled out anything in regards to SU or Simple Scrapbooks, so the only place they could have gotten my email address was SCS.
thanks for the report. let me definitively say that we never have and never will share your email addresses with anyone, for any purpose. we stated that on the survey and we'd never break that trust with you.
I don't have the facts yet, but we'll look into this and see what's up.
Daven, several weeks ago there was a post in General Discussion about taking a survey to join a test panel for some anti-aging cream. It was posted by a gal that worked for the same company that Stampin Up had used to find their product testing volunteers. (Let me state it was NOT STAMPIN UP that posted) She worked for that marketing company and said she'd had such good luck getting people here with that that she wanted to try for this new one. The post was pulled fairly quickly, or I'd go back and look for it... I have no idea if this is helpful or not, lol...
Volt is the company that was recruiting stampers to be on a Stampin Up panel. You would receive free SU product for filling out surveys. You had to take a questionnaire to see if you qualified. From my best recollection, I filled one out over a year ago. When I got the email from Beta Test Beauty I immediately remembered applying for the SU panel in hopes of getting free stuff. I too took the SCS survey but believe strongly that SCS has nothing to do with this.

ditto! i'm sure this is where they received my email addy from as i used my older email address for the SU! survey and that's where the Beta Beauty survey was sent. let me be clear - the email addy is NOT the same one i use with SCS so SCS couldn't have provided it to anyone.
i have a single addy that i use whenever i sign up for things online. then, if it's something that works out (like, if the SU! test panel had selected me), i would update my profile to include the email addy i typically use. make sense?
I did too. Here is what mine said, bit I took out the link information and phone number. In case this is a virus situation. Nothing mentioning either SU or SCS.

I have participated in all surveys that SCS has asked me to, and never gotten an email like this.
Daven and the rest of the Splitcoast team - thank you for your dedication to the members of this community -- I know you are out of town right now at CHA, so this must take some effort for you to coordinate.

Thanks for this reassuring statement, as well. Thanks for caring about your members so much, Daven

I've been in contact with Daven privately and he's looking into it. He's busy with CHA, so it might be a couple days.
I didn't fill out the SU survey posted here, so it's still a mystery where they got my email from.
Wereas I filled out the SCS survey, several Simple Scrapbooks contests (and would have filled out the recent survey, but the link was broken, sad to see they are folding Simple Scrapbooks), and, way back in the day, I also filled out several surveys for SU demos.
So they obviously have me down as a survey junkie!
Thanks for looking into it, Daven. Not nice to see SCS's name used in this way.

Just a polite bump and vouching for SCS privacy standards.
I have been a member since, uh, January 04 or something..I don't know exactly. My member number is in the 1600s. So I've been here awhile. I have NEVER EVER EVER had a problem with SCS using my information inappropriately. Further, I have never had a member of this community to my knowledge use my information or scam me or anything like that.
I guarantee you and swear on my Fan Club membership that this will get worked out. Tracy and Daven are just good people. Be patient and it will get worked out.
Have a great night everyone!
I spoke with the company yesterday that sent these misleading emails. we've never had any relationship or any communications with this company (Volt Marketing), and the contact information they have did not come from SCS.
as most of you know, we regularly delete promotional postings in the SCS forums. we've deleted postings in the past from representatives of this company, seeking participants in market research projects. some of our Splitcoast members may have responded to these postings however, and below is the explanation we've received from Volt Marketing:
Quote:
There have been discussion threads on Split Coast (sic) where users were talking about some of our research surveys and panels. Thousands of people, as a result, came to our sites and signed up to participate in market research, and we’ve recently sent out some emails announcing a new market research project we have going on in the skin-care field. We referenced Split Coast in the emails to help people understand how we knew about them and to help them understand they had signed up previously for research. I would be happy to confirm for you that Split Coast did not share any of your member information with us and we have only contacted those who signed up with us on their own for research.
I can't speak to the accuracy of the statement above, but that's the explanation we've received. we've asked them not to use our name again in any of their market research efforts, and not to post in our forums with solicitations of this kind.
if anyone has ongoing concerns or questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me directly: [email protected]

I think Volt Marketing needs to understand the meanings of "solicited" and "unsolicited", not to mention "spam". But it all seems fairly typical of these companies.
Daven, thanks so much for looking into this! So relived to know that SCS will continue to be a good guy!

I am sending an email to SU about this. I do NOT fill out surveys (sorry, not even SCS's) but I did fill out the Volt ones sent on behalf on SU (because it was SU! I thought there was no risk). For them to use my email to solicit for something else is unacceptable.
