I hope to learn how to make some of those a-dorable fleurettes...I'm taking my 1st crochet class this friday {whatta awesome Christmas gift!} with a bunch of my friends....
Has anyone made their own crocheted flowers similar to the Fleurettes in the new catty? Would you be willing to share the directions with me?

I haven't picked up a crochet hook in years, but I'm going to make me some fleurettes!!
I bet my mom could whip out a hundred of these in one night! Hmmm, might have to have a word with her. LOL! I suppose I could do it, too, but she has crocheted with thread a lot more than I have and her stitches are nice and even. (I would use thread vs. yarn, but that's just my personal preference.)
Really, all you would need to do is find any doily pattern that has the kinds of scallops that look like a flower, and crochet just the first few rows until you have the size flower you want.

I used to crochet. But, now, the strain of holding the hook is hard on my bum hand/arm and causes too much pain.
These would be so fun to make while on road trips, and watching my son at his sporting events, etc.
I'll just hafta buy ready made. LOL!

Oh and the smaller the thread the smaller the flower will come out. But I am sure you knew that!
Yep. For a card you might want to use a lighter-weight thread. For a scrapbook page you might want a heavier thread or yard to create a larger, heftier flower.
I'm not exactly sure what the fleurettes look like (can't open link) but I picked up some crocheted flowers by Bazzill. And I thought the same thing, can't I make these?
I asked a very seasoned crochet/knitter friend and she did not know how and said they are actually hard to do.
Glad I have a learning how to crochet DVD somewhere (DH picked it up for me on clearance ) Now I have a reason to watch it! I only know how to crochet straight lines.
I'm going to send my mom a picture of the flowers and ask if she could make something like that. (My parents are in Arizona for the winter, so it may be a few days before I can get back to you with an answer.)

I must admit, it's been a loooooong time since I crocheted (high school/early college), but, I was kinda hopeful, when I spied this:
I thought it was so pretty! Of course, I can only remember 3 stitches: chain, sc and dc. :oops: I will have to read more.
Hmmmm. Wonder if I could interest my Mom . . . she's does excellent crochet work, might enjoy making some, and she doesn't have a bum hand/arm like me. :mrgreen:

I just got off the phone with my mom and even without seeing a photo she said, "Easy peasy."
Well, she didn't say easy peasy because frankly, my mom just doesn't talk that way! LOL! But then she reminded me of these things she made a long time ago where she crocheted little flowers and leaves, sewed them onto a pretty fabric, and then put it in a wooden embroidery hoop. I actually found one upstairs and I've attached a photo. My mom made this in 1985 for her mother. I remember that it hung in my grandparents' bedroom.
These flowers are about 1.5 inches across. My mom said she has different patterns for little flowers like this.
I am a seasoned crocheter and I think they would not be that hard to make if you do not mind using a small crochet hook & the cotton thread. I have done other projects using the cotton thread and it can be tiring on the hands, trying to hang on to the tiny pieces.

My sisters and I actually learned how to crochet with the thin white thread and tiny hooks (and Japanese patterns that are soooo much easier to read than American ones even if you don't know a single letter of Japanese) making doilies. I think if someone has only crocheted yarn it might just take some getting used to. And now I'll shut my mouth until I actually try it. lol. It's been decades since I tried to crochet. :mrgreen:
I love crocheting with thread - the first snowflake took a little getting used to the thread instead of the yarn, but now I prefer working with the thread. Yarn feels too bulky!

These were not done with the thread. These were from May last year before I bought a bunch of different colored thread and use that now:

About all I could ever make were scarves or afghans when I was a teenager. But, thank goodness, I have no idea where any of them are today . . . some of the yarn I used back then would hurt the eyes today . . . :p
The little flowers are just so cute, I'm tempted to go buy needles and thread again! But, it would prolly inflame my tendinitis, and cripple my stamping hand/arm to work on something so tiny. :shock:

I love this wall hanging and love, love, love the flowers.....do you think your Mom would share the directions? If not, I will just take the photo and work it out. Beautiful!
Okay everyone! I found the butterfly directions! Yeah! And I took a pic of everything I still had in my recent stash along with the thread I use and the hook. The thread I got from Hobby Lobby and they have lots of colors. The hook I use is 00. Here is a pic and the butterfly instructions (sorry I don't remember who this is from so I can't give the author credit). Bad me!!!

Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring.
Notes: 1 round completes the butterfly. All of the stitches on Rnd 1 are worked in the Ch 3 ring, and stitches need to be pushed toward the beg of the rnd as you crochet.
Rnd 1: * ch 3, 2 tr, ch 3, sl st **, [ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st] twice, rep from * to ** once, [ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, sl st] twice.
Fasten off.

I too have thought of making my own - last Jan I retaught myself how to crochet from a brochure - hadn't done it since I was a teen. The examples above are gorgeous!! Thanks for the links and patterns..maybe this w/e I'll get a chance to try this out.

Yeah, what does "sl" mean? And what does "*" mean?
Talk down to us--it's OK, we don't mind!
sl is slip stitch, you slip stitch or "connect" into the ring.
The asterick normally indicates the beginning of a "segment". Then you will be told to repeat that segment.
For instance, if you are making a 5 petal flower, you chain and then sl or slip stitch to form a ring.
Then you will make a petal. (I am making this pattern up - just for a pattern sample.
Chain 2, then dc (double crochet) and then tr (treble or wrap the yarn TWICE instead of once), then dc, chain 2 and sl (slip stitch) into the ring. that makes one petal.
You will then repeat the petal. Instead of repeating the instructions, the pattern will tell you to repeat between the symbols.
Oooooh! Thanks for all the links. I have tested a few patterns, and they will be so easy to make. Of course, I have crocheted since I was old enough to hold the hook in my hand!
That is a great idea about dying them with reinkers. Since it is 100% cotton thread, I'm sure it will work. Can't wait to give it a try!
