I find that some stamp sets are easier to use than others. Does anyone else feel this way?
For example, I love the set called Cake Decorating 101 from Flourishes, but I can't seem to make a decent card with it. I've looked at some examples in their gallery, and all show beautiful and elegant ways to use the stamps but everytime I try - no good, my cards never look very nice. It's frustrating.
Anyone else have problems with some sets? I'm wondering if it's only me or if others feel the same way.
No, it's not just you...I'm the same way. Some I persist with (SU Always comes to mind); others, I bail out in a hurry and trade them for something else!
I have the same trouble. I like the Sparkling Summer set but can't seem to make a decent card with it. That's the first set that comes to mind. I've yet to want to part with it because I love the beach in the summer (wish I could get there more and play instead of lay around but I'm not good at catching/throwing things) but it's just a fun set with cute pictures. Oh, Many Moos, thought that would be a good occassion set, think I've used it once. :(
Anymore I tend to shop the galleries here of the sets I'm thinking of to see it they'll be practical for me or not. I've found that helps me.
i did sell a few sets this last summer and now have some regrets...
I did that too! I sold like 20 sets, and now wish I hadn't! Now I think I may never sell again :-D You just never know when you will have a use for something
The one I am having the most difficulty with, currently is Viola - I love the Chef, reminds me of the Disney Movie Ratatouille, but everytime I try to use him, I just can't seem to come up with anything new and exciting! I do intend to make a cookbook cover with him, eventually, but really wish I could incorporate him into more cards
YES!!!! Some sets practically make cards for me all by themselves, and other sets, no matter how much effort and thought and research I put into them, refuse to work for me. Is it my fault or theirs? I don't know.
Like momis mama, I still can't get rid of these problem sets.
I hear ya! I have the (retired) SU! Etruscan set, and I think it is so pretty, but I have no idea what to do with it. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm gonna go check out the gallery.

I would love to have some images of Viola. My sister in law's kitchen is decorated with the cute chefs and I thought if I had the images I could make her a cute matted picture for her birthday. Would you be willing to send me some images in perm black???? I know that's presumptious, but it never hurts to ask.
I can see how it would be hard to use those images for a card though. It lends itself more to decor than notecards.

Certainly! PM me your address, and let me know how many you want
I was a CTMH consultant for a while and have a LARGE collection of their stamps, but I haven't used a set in months and months. I think part of the problem is I don't see many CTMH stamps used to get inspired and I'm still at that stage where I need to see ideas to get started. I wish there was a larger CTMH gallery...
I think this must happen to all of us...except the true artists..... When I get really stumped (after I've looked through all the galleries available) I ask my SU Demo gal. She always has ideas and enjoys helping us. Good business for her too, her customers stay loyal to her. Try asking your demo. I can give you my demos name. She hosted the summer VSNs.

i always go to the sketch challenges when i am stumped!
i just look for a sketch that has an appropriate size focal space for the image i am wanting to use.
Humor in High Heels is one set that I keep getting flustered with. I loved it in the catalog, but I haven't done much with it. And everytime I do it just seems "blah".
Oh, boy, I could make a list a mile long...just went through a bunch of sets to sell, and quite a few of them have rarely (if ever) seen ink. I think I can do something with them, but once I own them, nothing. One of the worst for me was SU's Stipple Celebrations. I thought the cards in the catalog with it were so cute, but for me, just awful!
No, it's definitely not you. I bought PTI's Boards & Beams and Home for the Holidays after drooling over the DT's work for a while. Got them home, inked them up, and HATED every card I made with them. Oh well.
OMG, the challenging one for me is Baroque Motifs - I ended up getting it but it sat unused for a solid 6 months!!
I LOVE baroque motifs!! CHeck my gallery. I think I have a few there. If not, I'll upload some this afternoon. Not that I'm really great or anything, but once I started playing with it, I found a lot of ways to use it.

The biggest one for me was sunflower serenade (I'm pretty sure that's the name anyway...) I HAD to HAVE that set! I love sunflowers & I tried & tried but could never make anything decent with it & I finally got fed up & traded it!
I have the same problem - there were sets I "had" to have but when I got them home they've just gathered dust!!
Love ya bunches - I've done one card and refused to send it because it was so awful - its now gathering dust.
Add to that, the tags one whose name escapes me!!!
the list does on
I do try and have a sort out once a year - I put things in a box and if I don't miss it/need it over a 6 month window, it goes on ebay!

YES!! Love Ya Bunches! I thought it was so cute and that it'd be versatile... I haven't liked a single card that I've made with it. I've even tried casing them from the gallery, but it never looks the way I want it to. Bah! Glad I got it off of eBay and didn't pay much for it.

There is a website called www.patstamps.com and she has a whole gallery of both current and retired SU stampsets of cards made by any particular set. Go into it and you can find any SU stampset listed by alpha order. Just click on the name of the set, and it will bring up images of cards made by that set. She may even be a member here on SCS. Good luck. Karen
I have the hardest time with sets that have small images like the retired A Little Love. Unless I am doing a 3 x 3 card or a tag, I just don't know how to handle an image that small, and everything I try just ends up looking too busy.

I love that set! I don't use it often but it's fun. When I first started stamping (2001) someone talked me into getting Hand Painted Petites. I struggled with it for years & finally gave up & got rid of it.

I think that's my problem with a lot of the CTMH sets I have, now that I think of it, they're mostly the small images. I'll have to look more specifically for small image cards in my Favorites. I wonder if I even have many favorited, since I'm drawn to larger images. Hmmm... funny I didn't even realize that about myself. Learn something new every day.
i also like to check out the gallery of a set before i buy it to see how versatile it is.
the one i have and can't seem to work with is 'sketch it'
but yet i don't see me ever getting rid of it! how silly is THAT?!

I have a stash to sets that I have put aside to sell, but I am afraid I will wish I hadn't gotten rid of them. Like pwincess suggested, I will put them away for 6 mo. then off to ebay if I don't miss them.
