Hi
My niece is expecting again. I would like to do a morning sickness kit but don't really know what to put in it. I haven't had any kids. What do you suggest?
Thanks
Pam
I tried Google and found this Morning Sickness Survival Kit idea, which is probably the type of thing you're looking for... saltines, chamomile tea, travel toothbrush, mints, gum, moist towelettes, and wash rag. Here's the link:
I agree with Loretta. When I was pregnant, I lived on Tums, ginger-ale and crackers. You should throw in some saltine crackers. The peppermint lotion I used was Origins (because someone gave it to me) but it really does make you feel better. I'm sure that you could get some cheaper stuff.
If your niece is lucky, maybe she won't get morning sickness at all...but better safe than sorry! Your gift sounds like a wonderful idea!
I never experienced morning sickness myself in either of my two pregnancies, but all the suggestions above are what I've heard too. I can't think of a thing to add, just wanted to say great idea! :-D
I haven't thought of this for a long time since my youngest son is 11 but during my 2nd preg, I wore acupressure wristbands that I bought at the drug store. I was much less sick than with my first. I'm not saying I would have been sick if I didn't wear them but they may be worth a try. Even the placebo effect can be helpful.
I still hate that it's called morning sickness- more like all day sickness! I like ginger candy- I get some called Gin-Gins at my health food store and it seems to help. I also have the wrist bands- they help for a while but are not pretty!
Depends on the person. I lived on Lemonheads! Careful with the smelly stuff. That would send me running for the toilet! Used to love Bath and Body Works - can't even walk by one of their stores anymore - and my daughter's 10!
I was so sick with my first two kids that I lost weight through the 8th month! I hated almost everything, Saltines were the only thing I could stand...mints, ginger ale, all those other home-remedies were sickening. The only thing that really helped was a pillow and a place to lie down.
Oddly enough, my third kid (and last) was not so bad...I was sick a lot, but could at least eat enough to not lose weight.
I'm not saying not to do a kit...I honestly would have appreciated any kind of gesture from anyone even acknowledging that I was sick...so whether I liked ginger or mint or tea or anything wouldn't have even mattered...it would be the fact that they cared that I was miserable that would have been so nice!

Preggie Pops! I saw them at my local pharmacy and they are supposed to help with morning sickness.
I was going to suggest these Preggo Pops are a must in my book...LOL and they really do help the morning sickness! I always bought mine at Motherhood Maternity. If at all possible I would definitely try to put these in your kit.
That is really thoughtful of you to do for someone. And even if you get a smell wrong, etc, I think knowing she was thought of will brighten her day. With my son all I could stand was really cold Gatorade, and with my daughter when I felt queasy, I could eat jerky. I know that that sounds so bizarre to most people, but it was the one thing that I could handle when my tummy got rumbly.
Awww, that's sweet! I just went through 10 straight weeks of hideous morning sickness and appreciated every single bit of kindness anyone showed me during that time.

Just a note about Pepto: it was on my "Do NOT Take" list from my obgyn.
Ginger tea, candies and/or capsules all three from the health food store, gravol is safe for pregnancy (references: I am an RN, plus I used it with both pregnancies plus go to www.motherisk.org), wipes, preggie pops made me worse but it may help someone else, gaviscon is safer than tums or rolaids (you can take almost an unlimited amount without side effects of the other two) and works better (I prefered chewable and it travels better), you can get Vomibags from a first aid supplier, they close reducing the smell and 'tip risk' if you are in a car. Brushing my teeth made me gag but again, might work for someone else, I prefered mints and mouth wash. A travel toothbrush with toothpaste in the handle might be nice. As for packaging, you might want to include or decorate a small pencil case or makeup bag so it is portable. HTH

I was sick for the entire pregnancy (my last 2 were the worst) all day long....never did like the name "morning sickness" either. Ginger in any form and Grapefruit/citrus scents were a life saver, ginger ale, ginger cookies, orange juice, I had a bottle of Ginger Citrus body spay that I got from Avon a few years ago that REALLY helped. Cinnamon also helped, red hots and cinnamon trident gum. To this day I can not stand saltine crackers, I tried eating them before I even got up out of bed and needless to say it did not work. Mostly the thought is what counts, if someone had made me one, just having it would have been comforting! My husband used to think it was all in head untill my Dr. put me on medicine for it. Even with meds, I still lost 30 pounds with my last one. Hope she does OK!

I am 16 weeks pregnant right now, and nothing can prevent me from getting sick! All the talk about eating before you get out of bed, it's just crap I think. If you're going to throw up, you are going to throw up! Here's what I would want:
Travel toothbrush and toothpaste
Breath spray
Mint gum
Those cute little cans of either ginger ale or 7-up
Saltine crackers or maybe plain rice cakes
Depends on the person. I lived on Lemonheads! Careful with the smelly stuff. That would send me running for the toilet! Used to love Bath and Body Works - can't even walk by one of their stores anymore - and my daughter's 10!
I agree with this. We moved into our house when I was first pregnant (and didn't even know it yet). Every time I walked in our house, I had to throw up. We had to have the carpets professionally cleaned. Then I bought an air freshener that to this day I can remember the scent, and it makes me want to throw up. (That "baby" is now 21 years old.)
I also during that pregnancy made what sounded like an amazing sweet potato casserole for the first (and only) time. I have absolutely no interest in that.
I also agree with the "all day sickness" comment. Again, for my first pregnancy, I guess I craved spaghetti because I frequently cooked it for dinner. It just really appealed to me. So, I made it a couple of time a week, and threw it up every time. Don't ask me why, but spaghetti doesn't make me sick now. I still love it; I just don't throw up anymore.
I definitely lived on saltines back then.
I am one of those people who really liked sour things when I was pregnant and experiencing morning sicknes, sour lemon heads, lemonade and limeade (and virgin marguaritas!) Sour berry lifesavors were my absolute favorite candy then, I never have them at all now. All these things usually helped me from getting sick.
I have heard that crystallized (candied?) ginger is also good and you can look for some pregnancy tea (it probably has ginger in it, too!)
A dear friend also got me (maybe she made it herself?) a small lavender scented pillow to help me sleep better, I thought that was a very thoughtful gift and put it in with my first born child's keepsakes later on!

I agree with everyone; the guesture will be very appriciated! I was sick for 4 months w/ my first son and for 7 months w/ my second son. What we women go through is only understood by other women.... W/ the 1st preg I lived off of cheese popcorn and Gatorade. The 2nd one I ate lots of dry foods like popcorn, rice cakes and flavorless crackers. I mouthwashed lots because I couldn't brush my teeth (GAG!) so I always felt gross. I think that any personal hygene for the mouth is great! Mints, gum, mouthwash and such. Everyone here has such great ideas! It will turn out great no doubt!

Mint gum always made me feel better. And the accupressure bands but they were a little hard to get used to. They made my wrists sore for a couple days. I lived on Easy Mac and dill pickles. People always tease about pickles but I guess they are a little salty or maybe the vinegar in them is what settled my stomach. Good luck to her!
I was hospitalized for dehydration and kidney infection with my pregnancies. I threw up for SIX MONTHS, ten to twelve times I day. It's a big part of the reason we only have two kids (and number 2 was unexpected). It was a hideous time.
Anyway... not my favorite memory. They were worth it, of course. I second the wristbands. I could only wear them for a few hours at a time or my hands swelled, but they did seem to help a little.
Crystalized ginger is stronger than ginger snaps. I never tried the Preggie Pops but I know that after a few weeks you are so TIRED of chewing anything that maybe sucking on them would be a good change.
I drank protein shakes because they were easiest to throw up because after a while your throat gets abraded from throwing up food that hasn't even had time to begin to break down.
With my second one I learned to keep my stomach full 24/7 worked the best for me. I never went an hour during the waking day without eating and as soon as I opened my eyes in the morning, before I even lifted my head from the pillow, I'd eat two pieces of dry bread that I kept in a baggie by my bed. I was so sick of eating I thought I'd never ever be actually hungry again.
All that and I still LOST weight! You'd think I'd have been as big as a balloon!

Ginger tea and ginger cookies. Saltine crackers. (I thought that Camomile tea is not recommended). I liked the Preggo Pops and got mine from Motherhood Maternity-DH liked them too...LOL. There was a great book that I loved called the Mother of all Pregnancy Organizers-by Ann Douglas. You could do up an altered notebook for her to use as a journal.
