You can set the cricut to cut through different weights of paper. I have never had a problem with it cutting through SU CS. And I have normally seen the Cricuit Expression for $349. That is with no sales.

More info than you probably need but....
The orginal price for the Cricut Personal Cutter (the orginal) with one cartridge (Basic George) is $299.00. I got it last year at Christmas at Wal-Mart for $169.00. The Cricut Expression which has many more features and cuts papers 12 x 24 and items as small as .25" and as large as 11.5" is priced at $499.00 but I've seen it for as little as $250.00 at Sam's Club. The newest addition is called the Cricut Create which is the same size as the orginial one but has the better functions of the Expression. It's retail price is 399.00 and is on sale on Friday at Michael's for $149.00. I would buy this one because it has the functionality of the Expression but isn't the large size (can't take it anywhere) and you can't beat that price! It comes with the Don Juan font cartridge. You can cut cardstock and some smaller weight magnetic backed papers, thin chipboard and fabric (that has been stiffened with Wonder Under) but if you get any thicker you can void the warranty. I love mine and use it all the time for scrapbooking. I use my Big Shot for thick chipboard and other thick consumable materials.
here's the one I found on walmarts site for $199, it is the cricut expression (the big one that does up to 12x24)http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=8586070
My manager ( I work at Michaels) said we would price match it if the customer brings us the printed ad from walmart. I have heard from customers that their walmarts don't have a lot of these, so maybe try price matching it at your local michaels. Afterall, cartridges are on sale for $29.99 anyways for thurs, fri, sat! Plus, the one that is in this link at walmart only comes with one cartridge, plantin schoolbook, and the expressions at michaels come with 2 carts: plantin and accent essentials ( a really cool one with all kinds of swirls and such)
I'm stopping by Michael's to pick up the Expressions for my niece on the way to Thanksgiving dinner. It will be 50% off. 6-9pm on Thanksgiving Day. I confirmed it with the store manager.

My Black Friday AC Moore's ad lists the Cricut Expression Bundle: cricut, 4 cartridges (not specified which in the paper ad), 12 X 12 cutting mat and 5 inks for 269.00 WITH a Cricut Design Studio free (what's that?). Any feedback on which is the better deal?
TIA!

this acmoore bundle is a great deal! You should go for it. The cartridges are retail for 89.99, the inks for 14.99, the design studio 99.99. So, umm, yeah, heck of a deal! The design studio is an awesome computer program that lets you hook your cricut up to your computer and view all the cartridges that cricut has and you can play with them to see what all you could make, but you have to have the actual cartridge to cut. You can rotate, flip, stretch and weld images!
here's a cool blog I found of just some of the things you can do with it!: http://christyscricutcreations.blogspot.com/
Really, you can get SO much more out of a cricut with the design studio!
I thought it was the Cricut Create that was on sale for half price. Hopefully they will honor that for you anyway.
to fura:
she's right. I work at michaels, and the expression is not on sale. the create is on sale for $149.99. Maybe the manager you talked to was not clear which machine is which. Most people in my store have not a clue what the differance is. some even think it's a printer! So I would definitely ask for that manager who told you that when you go to the store. another manager may realize it's not supposed to be on sale, plus, it won't scan that way in the register. Maybe have it set up so that manager is at the register when you purchase it.
Sadly our Craiglist (minneapolis) already has 3 Expressions on there listed today for $275-300...I know people ran to Wal-Mart and bought them to just make a few $ off those who didn't get one.
I hate that they say retail is well over $300...etc. Retail is $199 now...LOL

I went to WM to get a video game around 2:00 this afternoon, and there were only 2 Cricut expressions missing out of the display!
I was eyeballing the regular one at J's as a present to myself for dealing with my ^%%#@&#*( boyfriend, but instead I bought him a video game??!! Which he promptly put back in the bag and threw on the counter and told me not to bribe him??!!! HA! sorry, don't mean to unload on you ladies here!
Anyway, I found the baby bug at the same WM, tucked neatly in the clearance-type aisle. So I grabbed it and went to scan it hoping I would luck out like some people have (some have seen them sitting around at 70$!!!) and it was 184$!!!! So I believe that Cricut Expression deal they were offering must be incredible!
Too bad I don't have that kind of money. I made myself feel better by getting the MS 18-pack of glitter for 22$ though
after reading all the posts I was brave enough and stopped at Walmart and got the cricut. I do not like crowds but was in and out of the mall in 1 hour. I was so exited. I got home and quickly unpacked it. Couldn't get that thing to turn on. It was defective :-( so sad. I went to Walmart again waited in line forever and have a new one. Haven't tried it yet but I'm hoping it works.
My wonderful DH went out this am at 4:30 to go get my my new E-bug at Wal-Mart. I've had the little bug for almost 2 years (Valentines Day 2006 gift) and just love it.
I Love my expressions. I got it last NOV for 249.99 with 4 cartridges, cutting mat and markers. I also have the original cricut to take with me to crops. I am sure everyone will love which ever machine your budget allows.
I did hit M's at 6 lastnight and got 6 new cartridges. Cant beat 29.99 I have never seen them so cheap...

Yep, he's a keeper!!!!
And tomorrow, I have to exchange it....it just stopped cutting. No rhyme or reason. Grrrr :(
For anyone still comtemplating getting a cricut today (saturday after thanksgiving):
I checked out the walmart expression for $199 and it comes with plantin schoolbook and solutions cartridge home accents. My michaels has been honoring walmarts price for this deal. And if you do that, it's actually a better deal than buying the walmart one because the michaels expression comes with plantin schoolbook and accent essentials. Which I believe are both retail priced at $89.99, wheras the ones walmarts expression comes with are retailed at $89.99 for plantin and $49.99 for home accents! And home accents is a cartridge you can buy as a single (not one that only comes with machines, other than ebay). You can buy it at michaels, joanne's, and such. Accent essentials is NOT sold separetely. And to me accent essentials is a REALLY cool one!
Also, Joannes $99 cricut is the original, not the same as Michaels exclusive create on sale for $149.99, the create does more things (and IMO has a cuter cartridge in it) plus you can cut shapes starting at 1/4", wheras the original cricut smallest you can cut is 1"
Hope this helps those undecided!
from your friendly michaels associate.

Accent Essentials does have only 50 designs on it and only one special feature that being Shadow. So it is limited in ability. But I will agree it does have some nice designs. If you have the Design Studio, it will give you more variety to do with it. I don't know the retail price for Accent Essentials as it came in the exclusive bundle when I purchased my Expression from AC Moore store.
I just tried mine and it works great! I think some of the problems others are having might be user error. I say this because it took me 2 tries to get the blade installed properly and then I didn't turn the blade to a higher # than 1 so it didn't cut right the first time.
My main problem is that now I want to go to Michael's and get more cartridges to try!!!!
I totally binged yesterday morning and bought the Expressions at Walmart. My SIL and I went about 7:00 because she wanted Kung Fu Panda and I ended up with the Cricut in our cart! lol I got it out of the box long enough to show it off to my crafty mom - so I'm really looking forward to playing with it when we get home later today!! :-) I feel a little bit guilty because I did get the SU! Big Shot this summer - but I know the Expressions will do things the Big Shot can't and vice versa. I may have to push for us to get home so that I can go to Michael's tonight and get some more stuff to play with!!
Michaels sent me a coupon today in my email - for the Cricut Create - additional 15% off on Monday - making it about $127.50
it is getting hard to pass up - I have the original baby bug - I'm thinking I can sell that for about $100 on my Craigslist and get the create for a great deal.....
My problem wasn't user error. It was that the blade wasn't doing what it's supposed to. I've had the baby bug for over 1 1/2 years and knew how to install it.
Anyway, I went and exchanged by e-bug this a.m. The one wal-mart usually carries only comes with 1 cart, so i had to convince them that I should get both carts since I was there at 5:00 yesterday morning and did get the bug and shouldn't be penalized because the MACHINE didn't work. They finally came around to my way of thinking
I decided to go check out the Cricut Create at Ms today so I'd know where to pick it up on Monday. I had to go to 3 Michael's before I found one in stock. I got the last Create at that store. So I decided to go ahead and buy it and not wait until Monday. I wouldn't have been able to find a store with it in stock anyway.

I didn't even look for the Creates yesterday because I figured they'd fly out of the Michael's store - especially with so many cartridges less than $30.
Well, what do you know, I was out to the Plymouth, MN store today for a couple of things with my 50% off coupons. There were TWO Create boxes sitting on the shelf looking ever so lonesome (like puppies in the pet store ya know). I asked a sales person if there were machines to go in the box and lo and behold there were 2 in the box at the end of an aisle. I decided to just take 1 home! LOL
I did buy a "couple" of cartridges to go with the one in the box though to keep IT from getting lonely. AND then over to Joanns to use the 50% coupons on an extra mat and the tool set.
I will probably be good though and put them next to my Santa stocking for Christmas morning. I made stockings for DH and me from quilted fabric years ago and our presents go in them or next to them in lieu of a tree. O happy, happy day to me.
~Cheers

I tried my cricut today and it is working. The one that I bought yesterday wouldn't even turn on. I'm so happy with this one. I've been playing all afternoon. It's addicting. If you bought one I also recomend trying it out. Don't wait until x-mas. Enjoy!
I just realized that the Cricut Create will probably be at Michaels reg price on Monday and then 15% off of that price so it will not be the $127 price...... my Michaels did have atleast 50 of these around noon on Friday -
