... I just made my order with my SU demo-- it was big with a lot of paper, supplies, and a coupla sets of stamps for x-mas.
and for the first time ever, I actually feel a little guilty for buying craft supplies. Why!?
I'm going to make my own x-mas cards, DBF is supportive of my habit, all is good in my world.. but I feel a little guilty this time around. I think the last "big" (big meaning over $150) I did was at least 6 mos, if not close to 1 year ago. And I don't do a lot of craft shopping in between. I have no idea why I feel guilty. It usually never fazes me at all.
Maybe it's because it's close to the holiday when I feel I should shop for everyone else and not myself (and no, what I got DBF would not be getting for me for x-mas).
And I've been on a stamping rampage lately, so it's not like I'm buying and it's going to sit there...
I feel guilty but for a another reason, I put in a lot of little orders throughout the year that really add up.
You shouldn't feel guilty especially since like you said you have been on a stamping rampage and using what you buy. I think that as long as you are using what you are buying (and not spending what you don't have) then you should enjoy your purchases.
You probably are feeling guilty because it is close to Christmas and with all the economic talks it is kinda scary to be spending lots of money on craft stuff.

Thanks. I think part of it is like you said- the economy, too. I'm in budget, but I think the economy makes it feel "not right" to spend (unless it's gas and groceries and necessities).
Thanks. I am going to stamp a lot so I get full value and enjoyment from my purchases. (It's seriously my only hobby. I used to clothes shop, now I stamp!).
guilty -- nope -- our significant others have their areas where they "spend" too. I just bought 24 sets of Nestabilities -- feel guilty -- nope!!

I usually feel guilty for about a minute or two, then I start planning what I am going to make when I get my supplies and I forget that I ever felt guilty. As far as the economy goes, as long as you arn't out spending thousands of dollars on things you will never use and as long as you are paying your bills and buying groceries I wouldn't worry about it to much. The country has had problems with the economy before and we find away to come back from it. I am not trying to make light of the situation, I am just saying that as long as people don't panic and spend within reason things will turn around.

Yeah, I don't care much for (the commercialism) of Christmas these days . . . I love Thanksgiving precisely because there are no gifts involved--just gathering together, and lots of good food--I'm all about the food and have the muffin top to back that up, too. LOL!
I had to laugh, but, my Grams would get SO stressed out about finding just the right gift for everyone in the family, that she finally cut herself some slack. Here's her solution:
"I'm only giving one or two gifts at Christmas. It may be to you, or it may be to someone else in the family, but when I spy the right gift that I know is perfect for whoever it happens to be, that's it. I'm done. Maybe next year, it'll be so and so. But, I'm not keeping track."
I suppose some would say that is a rather selfish and crabby approach, but, I can't say that I blame her for adopting this strategy, at age 90.
Besides, it cracks me up!

You shouldn't feel guilty about purchasing something that you use and that makes you happy. And I think hand stamped Christmas cards make other people happy, too. So don't fret and have fun when your box of toys arrives.

DO NOT feel guilty, if you are using the things you are buying I say no worries. I set aside part of the money I make for my stampin' and my husband sets aside part for his computer stuff. It's all good.

You should only feel guilty if you don't have enough money for food and you bought the stamps. And unless you are directly affected by this bad economy why should you care if you spend money on yourself? The way I see it spend more and stimulate the economy!
At 90, she should be able to do it anyway she wants! Cute story Julie - you should turn it into a scrapbook page!

Adriene, Your blog totally rocks, I just bookmarked it for myself. I feel a little guilty about making my own cards since I say look I just made this card with my stuff today. I don't think about the 1,000's of bucks in the craft space to make that "free" card. I feel that at this time in my life I just need to do something that makes me happy and card making makes me very happy. And that Christmas card is awesome. I might have to get that mouse stamp and do those for next year, lol. I already have the stamps from SU.
I know what you mean about feeling guilty. We've been on a tight budget since April. I budgeted $50 fun money a month, $25 of that to been specifically for stamp supplies. I don't how many weeks I went without buying anything because I used that money for other needs. And then I was reminded how we need to pay ourselves first. So I did. I have to admit that the last couple of months I spent my money on supplies for Christmas gifts. So the guilt wasn't there. As long as it's cash and not credit, go for it.

I found myself feeling really guilty last month when I placed my order (at the exact same time as the bail out or not fiasco). I knew I had the money and both dh and I have very secure jobs and paychecks, but I think all the negative talk about the economy makes you feel guilty about not worrying about your personal finances too.
I think there is just too much economic jitters everywhere this year, but you know your personal finances, not the guy on the news.
I was feeling guilty at times also, now I pray about every purchase, there are times when I am lead not to buy and I listen, I feel to much abundance is deadly to the soul. And though I enjoy this new craft I have also learned God does not want us to have every thing we see, and even in this we must pray and seek Him first.

What JulieHRR says about her Grandmother's solution to shopping for others, yes, it works if you don't have any young grandchildren in the family. Children would be very disappointed if one of their siblings or cousins got a gift from Grandmother, but they didn't.
Same is true for me. I have no human children, but more than 11 nieces and nephews. If I can't get a nice gift for each of them, I just don't get anyone in the family a gift. That way no one is disappointed. I feel it's not fair to play favorites.
Actually, I enjoy not giving gifts. It's takes all the stress out of the holiday. I can enjoy just the togetherness with the family and socializing instead of worrying and trying to find that perfect gift for each person.
I do make personalized Christmas cards for each of my family members even the young children. That's my gift to each of them. They each receive it in the mail so they can feel special if that's what they like.

I have the cash to spend on stamping stuff but trying not to spend due to the economy. I do feel guilty when I do spend for stamping stuff not because I can't afford it but I think of all the stamps and supplies I have that I have not even used. And some of the stuff I've had for years. What a waste -- feeling real guilty.

I totally agree... Egad! My brother has five kids: two 20 yr old girls, one 18 year old girl, one 16 year old boy and one 14 year old girl. I found the girls cute bracelets this summer at a craft show (bought one for myself too). I finally found the neatest thing for the 16 year old boy -- a set of potato pellet guns. (But I got two on eBay for around $5 total including shipping.) Then I give them each $10. I've finally realized a few years ago that MY present isn't supposed to be the "end all" of fabulous gifts. That's their parents' responsibility.

Today I am at work shopping...SU, glimmer mists, spellbinders dies, etc.
It seems like such an indulgence but I figure that these are early Christmas gifts and it is good to take advantage of a sale if possible. Most people give me money and we have 3 paychecks in December. Most of my Xmas shopping is done for the others including treats for the dogs and most of the things we will have for Christmas baking and dinner.
