and this site was started by a SU demo and her husband (Daven and Tracy Nolta). So this site was originally for SU demos, but has grown to include customers and ANY other stampin' folk. All comers are welcome. The challenges naturally follow the SU colors - but you can come close with several other brand colors and still get the challenge of new color combos.

I'm not a demo with any company; but do love the color challenges on this
site. I do tend to buy more SU cardstock, but am not bound to them only.
With the color challenges, I have printed off a card I like, and taken it to
the store, to find other company color matches close to it, also.

Right - the SU colors are just a reference. I love them since they are naturally designed to "blend" and I'm severely lacking in knowing what goes with what but over the last several months I've also expanded to many other vendors and still use my SU color wheel to know what goes with what.
Emily did a poll back in March asking whether people wanted to see other colours besides SU, and the results were overwhelmingly in favour of SU. Here's the link if you want to check it out: Colour Poll
However, it doesn't matter. Honestly, you can use any colours you want, the challenges are a way of getting you to try different combinations. So if you have a close or even not so close matches...play! There are no rules about using SU papers...just that most of us are familiar with the colours so it makes a good reference point.
JUST CURIOUS!
If this site is for all stampers. Why are our color challenges on the NON-DEMO board always listed in SU colors?
Just curious myself -
are you OK with this explanation?
As mentioned, I use many other vendors and it's just a reference point.
Paper Trey is great, Stamping Bella, Prism Papers, etc etc. I guess using the acronym we use in swaps - NVR right?
Please don't be put off by the SU. I think it is also sort of where many of us started out and they are also the only ones in my knowledge that does the color wheel thing and the sets of colors that for those people that have troubles knowing what "goes" - that provide help.
Wow, yes, this thread is a bit stale! I understand the origin of this site and why it is deeply SU influenced . . . and I participated in the color challenge poll too. Colors need a point of reference, and who would do the job of listing a challenge that listed every major company's colors ??? ;)
My 2 cents...it's probably easier to say Barely Banana or Ruby Red as opposed to saying pick a pale yellow, or a light red that is sort of pinkish...I think it is easier to think in SU shades...Most of my SU cardstock is gone now, but I still play! I ripped out a page of an old catalog, and take it to Michael's or JoAnn's every now and then, and pick some colors that I think match...also...if I'm really stumped, I just use dp that goes along with the challenge! Hope that helps!
Actually, I'm glad somebody resurrected this old post. I have been lurking and wanting to do a color combo challenge, but was hesistant due to lack of SU paper. Glad I can participate. Can't wait until tomorrow to pull out my SU catalog (great tip schirmcat!) and try to make a match with what I have on hand.
I asked about the SU colors a year or so ago when I wasn't sure if it would be ok for me to use non SU colors. Emily replied to use what ever looked close. I did go on Ebay a short while after that and found a lady selling a sample ring of the SU colors very reasonably and bought it. A lot of the colors I already had clones of and some I actually did buy the SU. Just use what you have and it will be perfectly fine.
Ladies - I have stated many times that I am not picky about perfect matches. The colors are a suggestion to help you think outside the color box you normally work in. I'm not a color nazi - just have fun with it!
There are some really great comparisons of colors on the Lists and Charts thread, for CTMH, Prisma Color and others. That is what I use for doing the color challenges as I have mostly CTMH colors.

I asked that once and was assured it was just because those were easily identified colors to compare and easy to locate to find a similar color. I have never seen anyone have a problem for using a similar color in a challenge. I think many SU people just naturally THINK in SU colors Oh, that Pomegranate sweater is beautiful! LOL

This is SO true and SO funny! I refer to clothing, paint...so many things by SU colors. I just signed up as a hobby demo...but long before that my staff said I needed "an intervention!"
(by the way, I am currently wearing chocolate chip and tempting turquoise!)

What a great idea! I never thought of that, I will have to try it. Thanks!
