Default silly question...

interesting thing for you to ponder on:

what makes you send someone a handmade greeting card vs. a store bought card?

I know, sill question for a stamping message board.

I had a gal ask me this today and I felt like she was being a little snippy about us "crafters" as she called us.

I'm sure there are probably ppl. out there that look at handmade cards as "cheap" in their eyes as opposed to buying one at the store. But, all my friends and family love my cards from what they tell me and look forward to getting a handmade card b/c they know how much work and enjoyment I get out of them and that's all I need to know.

I think if you added up all the goodies in our rooms for cardmaking and divided it up by how many cards we make for freinds and family each card would end up running live 989.58 apiece...what do you ladies think? Nothing cheap about giving a handmade card...lol
blessings.

I've never thought of them as cheap and I don't think anyone I know does either. I see them as more "boutique" than anything.

I only send handmade cards.

First, to answer the question, I pretty much only send handmade...

Second, as I was dropping off a special card for a young lady at church, her Mom told me how much she has enjoyed the card set I made for her at the end of the school year. She had been my son's teacher and I made her a variety of cards and packaged them in one of the PTI boxes with a belly band. She had written a thank-you, but it was really nice to know that she was enjoying them!

I send store bought cards to acquaintances and hand made to the people who mean the most to me. People who do not know about a subject and cannot do certain things tend to be "critical" and don't need more ammo! The store card they get is from Dollar Tree and not much thought goes into it.

I would send someone a store bought greeting card only if I broke both my arms and had run out of cards in my stash.....

I just don't buy cards any more - the people at Hallmark probably think I'm dead. (Notice how THEY never sent a card - ironic, isn't it?). I threw away my Gold Crown Card about 5 yeasrs ago and never looked back!

The only time I don't make a card is if I'm given no notice on an event and I don't have an approperiate card in my stash. Thats only happened a few times in my life...and had to promise to send a handmade card later, lol. One of my really good friend's boyfriends wanted to surprise her with a promise ring in front of all of her friends and told me the night before. Ugg.

My friends joke that if I was ever mad at someone...to send them a store bought card, lol. That would be mean and it would hurt my friend's feelings.

This is funny...I tell my hubby I just made a 3 cards at $48 each...when I spent $144 on stuff in the same week as those 3 cards got done!

If he knew they were actually $989.58 each, he would faint!!

I do think some people assume a handmade card is the cheap way out...but I don't send my cards to those people...we all know who they are.

And I send handmade cards rather than storebought for 3 reasons:

1: I LOVE LOVE LOVE making cards.
2: I can make the card perfectly fit someone's personality.
3: Storebought cards are so cheesy.

The creativity has to go somewhere. Can't think of a better place for it to go! You can't keep it in or you'll get sick.

Yeah... :-D
I think it is much more thoughtful to send someone a handmade card~with it sends the message that the person was worth enough to spend the few extra minutes making a card just for them. Anyway, it's just F-U-N to stamp!

I have people who give me the "oh geez, this woman needs to get a life!" rolling the eyes look...these people are definitely NOT card worthy! lol! And I think that a lot of people just don't understand...they are confused about the difference between "home made" and "hand made or handcrafted"! I explain to them that "homemade" is how you describe cookies...."handmade or hand crafted" is descriptive of a one of a kind work of art and if they don't behave they can roll their eyes all the like but they will never get a hand crafted cardfrom me! And I try not to sound too snippy when I say it. lol! Jan

That's exactly the way I am. I think I've bought one store-bought card in the last few years only because I was away from home and needed one in a hurry. Otherwise, everyone gets a hand-made one. Yeah, I know some go in the trash; but the people who tell me how they enjoy them make up the difference.

I had a friend that recently had surgery and she was trying to come up with something positive that would come from the experience. She told everyone that she knew she would get a handmade card from me and another friend! She was especially excited that she got both before she left the hospital.

That's one of the reasons that I make handmade cards.

Everybody gets handmade from me. My husband would kill me if I spent money on cards after all the money he has spent on my toys!!!

I have to make handmade cards to send out to people, if I didn't how would I justify spending so much on all the supplies that I buy LOL. My DD bought me a store bought Mother's Day card and when I found out how much she paid for it I told her next time just give me the money so I could buy more supplies. My Mom has not bought me a birthday card over the last few years in her words she said that with all the wonderful cards that I make she could not bring herself to buy me such a cheap looking card, I thanked her for the compliment. For those who do not understand our craft they need to try making a card to see what time and love we put into each and every card that we make and then we'll see if they make snippy comments.

Making a card is cheaper than buying one. Alot of love goes into my cards so that makes them special to me as the sender.

Snort...you haven't seen them!!! FO SHO!

Oh, and speaking of Hallmark, I used to spend sooooo much money there. I loved their Fresh Ink collection. Totally random and witty. I did get an email from them about 3 months ago from the Gold Crown thingie saying, "Where have you been? We miss you?" It cracked me up. Little do they know how much I've spent since I "broke up" with them!!

for friends or family who get a kick out of hand-created I love to make for them! I love to make for friends who share the same interest especially; it's a great way to show techniques off.

I rarely buy cards anymore, but I have been known to recycle parts from cards that were given to me to create new better cards....

I send pretty much all handmade ones and most people I know love them! I get so many comments and questions on them. People get excited about my Christmas cards each year:-)

And case in point: I started dating a guy long distance a few years ago and he was in Florida visiting his dad who had cancer so I sent him a card made with the Loads oF Love set, "thought you could use a little pick up", ya know the one? Well turns out through conversaion a few days later he had NO IDEA it was handmade by me....he said thanks for the card and I said ya it's kinda my hobby and he was like what is???? I explained and he couldn't beleive that I hadn't bought it somewhere! So that was a total compliment! I ended up sending him 1 or 2 cards a week for like a year because he liked them so much, haha. BUT the really funny thing that happened is that he couldn'nt figure out how I'd made the card....so he TOOK IT APART, hahahahaha! I saw it or what was left of it, he pulled all the layers apart and pried the dimensionals off that I had put on it. I just thought that was toooo funny...plus he kept all the cards....even the one he destroyed:-p Just thought I'd share my funny story.

So if people like them great...and if they don't then they can just throw them away like the would any other card....it already made me happy to send it....selfish I know:-)

there's this LADY ( i say it with attitude ) who gives everyone with a hobby this snarky comment: "wow.. SOMEONE has too much time on their hands..." and gaffaws at their (my) work... well.. she knows i make handmade cards, and her store-bought cards that i am required to give her out of professional courtesy are a slap in the face that i hope she feels stinging long after she opens them.

she's about the only one i give store-bought cards to. i have a stack of 'em. really ugly ones. lol

I send my cards to everyone as I feel that something homemade is the best gift or card you can receive. I think it shows that you care enough to do something special for that someone receiving the card. I have only had someone make a rude comment to me once and I have never sent this person another homemade card. It was for a girl I worked with and I made what I thought was a very special card for her and although she never said anything to me she told several of our co-workers that she thought it was very cheap of me to make a card rather than buy one!

I only send handmade cards. I can't remember the last time I went to Hallmark and actually looked at cards.

Of course not everyone appreciates the time and thought to making a card but that doesn't stop me. I enjoy making them and that's enough for me.

I can't remember the last time I bought a card. I work at Walmart and it amazes me how much money people will spend on cards! I know all of the supplies I've purchased added up would probably some to a small fortune but there's something very satisfying with taking some plain paper and turning it into a work of art! I'm not "crafty" but I can create!

I have only been hand making cards since April this year, and since then I have not given out one store bought card. My sister has been known to give the odd "cheap card" comments during that time, but I have reminded her this new hobby of mine is far from cheap. I think she is a little jealous that I have the time and patience to do them. My friend has asked me to send her cards for no reason other than because she is my friend and thinks she should get them regularly. She is probably right.

To re-phrase the Hallmark slogan.......When We Care Enough to Send Only the Very Best!

No matter who they are, I send a handmade card. I enjoyed making and personalizing it for that person and event. If they don't see that, it doesn't matter to me. I enjoyed it anyway.

I don't give a gift in a box to anyone. My handmade cards are my gift to them. If they think that's cheap.....that's their opinion which I can't change.

I have not bought a card since I started stamping. Every card I give is made by me.

I buy cards if the idea is extremely cute or for a sentiment and they never get sent. The store cards I send are the ones that are funny, funny, funny.

I send the cards from my stash that I don't really like to those that don't "get" card making. My friends and family get upset if they don't get handmade cards.
