Ornament HELP!!
Okay, I'm trying to do the clear ornaments for MOPS and I am so lost! These are the directions I've used, (whomever I got them from thank you,) but it just isn't working. I don't have much covereage with the glitter, and it just doesn't stick. Does it need to be the dazzling diamonds? I don't think the MOPS leader likes me very well and these really have got to turn out GREAT. Thanks for all you help! Oh, I'm using the classic ink refills, does it need to be the craft ones?
L
Supplies:
Clear Glass Ball Ornaments
Dye-Based Ink Refills
Glitter (ultra fine and any color)
Ribbon, Raffia etc...
Small paper or plastic cup (ornament needs to sit on top)
------------------------------------------
Take clear glass ball ornaments and remove the top.
Rinse ornament out with water, drain water. (helps ink cover inside)
Drop about 18-22 drops of one color of ink refill into the ornament.
Swirl ink around the inside of the ornament until inside is covered.
(Only add one color ink refill (dye based ink) or it will create a muddy
mess and won't look very nice.)
If there is excess ink, turn the bulb upside down and let the excess ink
drain off into a paper/plastic cup OR onto your ink pad!
(thanks for that tip Jodie V!)
While draining, take a business card size piece of cardstock and fold
in half hotdog style.
Pour approximately 1/2 teaspoon glitter into the cardstock that is folded.
(You can mix different colors glitter here.)
Pour glitter into glass bulb, QUICKLY, put a small piece of paper or
plastic over opening, to protect your finger, now ...SHAKE vigerously.
You should shake the glitter around *immediately* so that it doesn't sit
in one place forming a big blob of glitter.
Pour excess dyed glitter into a different paper/plastic cup.
(You can reuse it.)
Put the top back on the ornament.
Tie Organdy or Grosgrain Ribbon, Raffia or whatever you would like around
the top or just leave it plain.

i did my clear one different. i took a piece of acetate, trimmed in a circle the size of the ornament, embossed a picture on it (one that i didn't have to color it) rolled it up and fit it into the ornament (it should be a tite fit but not so tite that it curls). it would unroll to fit in the center of the ornanment (sometimes with a little help). then i added glitter/snow to the inside of the bulb so it was on both sides of the acetate piece and put the top on, added a ribbon and it was done - got lots of oooo and ahs. i did some for a group of anthropologists with southwestern symbols and - omg - you would have thought i gave them gold! they are fun to do and real easy if you have to do a bunch.

I don't have to do a bunch, but I've got a bunch of ladies to do one or two. that's why the glitter idea looked so good, fast and easy, but it's not working!

I haven't made any of the glitter ornaments yet but plan to try them this year (I made lots of the acetate ones like carolyn m described above and they're fun and turned out super). But I do recall seeing in the instructions that you don't want the bulb to be too dry inside; you need some of the liquid (water & dye) for the glitter to adhere to. Is it possible you're draining them too much before adding the glitter? Just a thought; sorry I can't be more helpful. What I would suggest though is you check out the "Trim the Tree" section in the "Everything but a card" gallery (there are several glittered ornaments posted in there) and see if you can get some pointers there. Here's the link: Trim the Tree by IndigosMom at Splitcoaststampers
Or, try a search for glittered ornaments. Hope that helps, and good luck! Let us know how they turned out.

This may help ...
Post #9 on this thread has a MSWord attachment that gives step-by-step instructions, with pictures, for how to make the acetate inserts for glass ornaments. I don't know if this will help, but I thought I'd pass it along.
Forums at Splitcoaststampers
Also, if you go to the "Search" menu at the top of this thread, type in "glass ball ornaments" you will find several old and new threads with instructions, tips, etc.

Well, I'm glad someone besides me has not had any success w/ these. Man, what a mess! I wasted four of them before I finally gave up. I even tried using acrylic paint (as I've heard that works, too), but by the time it drains out the stuff is basically sliding off the sides. I went w/ the acetate inserts, and they are so cute! I'm much happier! If you do a search in the Techniques Forum for "glass ornaments", you'll find lots of instructions for these, and you can use the round ornaments the same as you would the flatter ones. Good luck and if you do figure out what works w/ the reinkers, please let me know.

I made them (before I had a digital camera) and I used a few drops of a clear acrylic decopage medium that came in a small tube (like the apple barrell size container). I got it at Mikes. I'm not home so I can't look at the bottle but you can pm me if you want me to check. It was a nice thin liquid that dries clear so it could be easily colored with the reinkers (I did them plain). The liquid really "stuck" to the sides of the ornament, when I drained it, and the glitter went on really evenly that way. Perhaps just a few drops of this in your ink is what you are looking for. Good luck, post if it works.

I absolutely think that will help. It sounds like your color needs a little more stick-to-it. I think CE is the perfect remedy, clear but sticky and should work with the ink well!

When I've done them, I've only added about 10 drops. Roll the ornament slowly to coat it. Let it rest upside down for only a few minutes. Add ultrafine glitter {this might be your problem], covering the hole with paper to prevent glitter escaping. I forgot that If the reinker isn't enough you can add more as you go. It just may be the type of glitter. Hope that helps. It always works for me.

I've done the glitter balls and those directions seem right. I didn't rinse mine out before and also didn't add that much reinker. I just put more reinker in when I needed it for coverage and swirled it around. Make sure you aren't letting the reinker dry before you put the glitter in. You don't have to use Dazzling Diamonds (I did), just make sure you are using ultra-fine glitter. The ultra-fine glitter I've seen actually costs more than DD. What problems are you having exactly?

I tried adding Mod Podge to the acrylic paint (white) w/ reinkers...still same result, so I'm not sure CE would work either. I also used very fine glitter...maybe it was too fine?

I did 2 today just to show at my party tonight, and they turned out great! I followed those exact instructions and they worked for me anyway (a rare thing I might add)!

The glitter isn't covering. The glitter I used was some real big stuff, the 99 cent stuff from Hobby Lobby. I think I have some finer stuff I'll try today. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I would think the bigger stuff would tend to clump. Try the ultra-fine Good luck!!!

i am planning on doing these myself but my instructions call for alcohol ink - it seems that would work better since it is made for slick surfaces but i have not tried it yet......
