Default SU Double Mounted Stamps

Anyone else have problems using double mounted stamps? I was so bummed to get the new SU halloween set and it's double mounted - I love my SU outline alphabet but hate using it - I need to unmount it but thought I'd check around and see if there is a trick to using them. Thanks for any advise or ideas.

I don't know about unmounting your stamps but I too was very unhappy with my double mounted Halloween set. I went to my LSS and bought wood blocks for the stamps that didn't have one. I hope SU does not do this often.

What exactly does double mounted mean? I'd never noticed that symbol before and then I noticed it on that really big set with the grass. I love that grass stamp, but I can't imagine how it could be mounted on two sides & still have room to stamp. I feel really dumb, but I just can't wrap my mind around how this works. And if I did buy this stamp, can I leave it unmounted? Enlightenment?

I wonder why they do it with some sets. Like that halloween set, it has 8 small images. They have plenty of sets with 8 small images all on their own block, so why dm that one?

Not sure why they doublemount some of those small sets, honestly. I do think there is a growing trend towards that, as a way to avoid more price hikes. Prices are going up for everybody unfortunately, not just consumers.

Double-mounted means that instead of having the rubber on one side and the full-sized label on the other side of the block, two rubber images share a block (one on each side). Then the labels are shrunk down and are meant to be put on the end of the block. Kind of confusing without it being right in your hands, lol...

I haven't had any problems with double-mounting so far, although I don't know if I care for how snugly they fit in the cases. Probably the main problem would be for those who don't like to clean stamps after each impression made, lol...so if they stamp the image on one side, they will HAVE to clean it off before flipping it over to use the other side.

I won't buy them. I can't use them, they are wobbly or at least feel wobbly and I rarely get a good image. The benefit to wood, to me, is having the image right in front of me when I'm stamping!

When I mount my stamps, I try to line the label very carefully up with the rubber so that when I stamp, I have a pretty good idea where the image will come out on the paper. However, with the double-mounted stamps (I have the Live with Passion set), I really have a hard time judging where the image will stamp on the paper. I usually end up placing it too high or too low.

I'm not fond of the double-mount.

Glad to hear I am not the only one. I will think of something that will work best for me - it just bums me out that I will have to spend more money on sets I already purchased. I worry too that with the clamshell box closed so tightly, that it will effect my stamps over time - I am fortunate enough to have drawers that I can store my sets on their sides - not everyone has that option.

SU is also doing because many stampers complained about storage. Their theory - Less blocks - less storage it takes. Please email SU and let them know you are NOT happy about it!

I just don't get it. It makes the stamping so clumsy. Either I want totally umounted or mounted, not some odd combination.

while I love the images in Inspired by Nature, I will NOT buy it because it is double mounted. I like having the image for placement on top.

I am not too crazy about double mounteds either. I'd rather pay more and have a block of wood for each image.

I have some wood blocks taking up space in my craftroom (I don't use them). If anyone would like a couple just send me a PM...if I have some in the right size I'd be happy to send them.

If you need wood blocks to customize your stamp sets, check out The Block Guy.

And if you are interested, this link explains how he got started making blocks

I have the Nature set, which is double-mounted (the one with the grass you referred to). While I understand the reason for double mounting, I'm not a big fan of it, except for alphabets, in which case I don't really mind.

With the letters, I manage to stamp with both sides without necessarily cleaning the letters in between. That is not really possible with the grass stamp because it's so big (and because I am too clumsy).

I haven't used that one in a club or class before. I'd be afraid we would undoubtedly wind up with ink on the table. Even if you want to put it upright on the table, it's so big that it will probably topple over as soon as someone knock the table ever so slightly.

I didn't buy the Halloween sets, but I read about the double mounting and I was a bit bummed that SU! is heading in that direction. I organize my stamps by sets in their original boxes so if a set is double-mounted but still won't fit in a smaller box, I'm not saving any space in my closet anyway.

Ugh, I don't like double mounted sets either. They are awkward to stamp with. I won't buy them anymore, regardless of how much I like the set. I don't want to spend extra to buy more wood blocks either. Even if I did, I would have a storage problem because they won't fit in the box so I have to spend more money on that too. It's just not worth the hassle and extra expense, IMO.

I don't mind the double mounted. I don't use the wood blocks anymore anyway. The double mounted sets are cheaper because there aren't as many wood blocks. If SU isn't going to offer us a choice of 'no blocks' for cheaper money, at least I can buy the 'double mounted' sets for less money.
I am saving my wood blocks from all of my new stamp sets I buy since I've unmounted. So far it's just the wood blocks from Simply Said (so you know the sizes of them) ...if anybody is interested!

Forgive me if this is a repeat comment...

I also have issues with the double mounted stamps. So what I do is search in the B/S/T forum for wood blocks. There are Gals that keep their wood blocks because they use them unmounted. Measure the sizes you need and place a post in the ISO forum for the sizes you want. I have been very lucky when looking for blocks, most will send them to you for the cost of shipping. You can get a TON of blocks in a flat rate box. HTH!!

I agree with the people who said to email Stampin' Up! and let them know you don't like the double mounted stamps. I am sure its a space and cost saver. It doesn't really bother me but I would prefer the stamp be on one block. I hadn't thought about purchasing blocks or checking the BST forum. That's a great idea. Hopefully, I will actually remember it!! LOL

Me again - I did email demo support and let them know about our thread here. I did receive an answer but it was pretty general. I do believe our comments are heard but with sooo many people wanting different things, all we can do is hope. I went and bought some Tack It - over and over. I will see if that works for me. Price is right and I already have acrylic blocks from CTMH and ebay..I will let you know tomorrow if it works

UPDATE:

I found a solution that worked great for me.... I was NEVER going to unmount but hated the mentioned Halloween set. After researching, I bought some Tack it Over and Over.... WOW! I already had acrylic blocks (CTMH) and found some inexpensive CD cases at Big Lots. My next set was the SU Outline Alphabet and WOW.... I LOVE USING IT NOW!!! I think I will keep chosing which sets I do and don't do but this seems to be a perfect solution.

Thinking about the Background stamps next.... the acrylic bock I use will have the Tack and Peel on it . Heard mention of the space being too large and the tack it over and over curled some stamps. This way I only treat one block and store the unmounted in the cases BUT can store lots of them per case. Kitty14 told me it made them lighter and easier to use. Thanks for everyone's input!!

I agree with you, Joan. I did make an exception for the Inspired by Nature, only because I was able to obtain the extra set of blocks from an SCSer who unnmounts all her stamps. However, it is a pain not to have the full-sized picture on the other side of the stamp, so I won't be buying any more double-mounted sets.

LM :-)

I too find it awkward to use the double mounted sets. I didn't even like it when they did it with the alphabet sets. I could never really get a good grip on the wood block with the rubber on top. I doubt I will be purchasing any double mounted sets in the future. Just my two cents if SU happens to read this thread.

I sent my email also. In it I suggested that they could divide the double mounted sets into (name of set) and More (name of set) --- as in the past with sets like Petal Prints and More Petal Prints.

Using Inpired By Nature at both a stamp camp and a monthy stamp club proved to me that I am not any good with double sided stamps due to my multiple sclerosis. The tactile response was small jerking and contraction movements in my hand. NOT good for obtaining good image on cardstock. (plus there had obviously been a past use with Irridescent Ice powder at one time, which as we all know, is very difficult to completely remove -- and is not that easy to absolutely remove in one shot from your hands either)

Those two tries were enough to tell me that set would not be coming home to my stamp room, nor would the Text and Texture set that had also been on my wish list.

One can only hope they will listen.

It doesn't bother me at all since I unmount. I am hoping they will eventually let us decide unmounted or mounted. It would solve the problem as those of you who prefer wood could get the complete wood set and those of us who want rubber only wouldn't pay for blocks we do not use.
