I'm bidding on a retire SU on Ebay, I'm the high bidder...ending in less thatn one hour...
When it gets down to the wire I always feel like I'm not sure I really want it because I always end up spending more that I really want to.
But, I am always afraid I will loose the item.... Why do I ever look there...
I can't resist temptation!!!! But, my long retired but really love em' list is WAY TOO LONG!!! Why didn't I start stamping 10 years ago?:rolleyes:

I've done the same thing so you aren't alone :-D But the way to look at it, I guess, is if it's not a set that comes around that often, and as long as you don't go over (too far over??) the original price it was when it first came out in the catty, then you really haven't lost Some sets go up in value while other really depreciate. Yes, it's used and yes, there were owners before you, but if it's still stamps well and is in good condition, you can keep it for a long, long time and get plenty of value out of it, too. Plus, sometimes I think what is the person's situation that they are selling it - it would break my heart to have to sell some of my very special sets and I like to think that whoever and why ever it's for sale, it is coming to a loving happy home. Not sure if that makes sense! I guess that's when I used to do ebay how I determine how high up I will go :-D Good luck and let us know if you win!
I don't buy much on ebay, but when I do, I use a sniping service, esnipe.com. You use esnipe to place your bid for you. You tell it your maximum bid, and it places it for you in the last few seconds of the auction. You don't have to be awake or online when the auction ends, you can't be tempted to go over your maximum, and you frequently win items for the minimum bid since nobody can see that you're bidding until it's too late. It costs a very small amount to use esnipe, usually about 25 cents per item won. Oh, and you can also use what they call bid groups to bid on several of the same item and have it automatically cancel all of the remaining bids once it wins one of them for you.

Cool... I never knew this service existed... Might have to use it next time to keep me out of a bidding war and then regret how much I just spent!!!

How do services like E-Snikpe and the other one work if more than one bidder on an item is using it, lol? Is it first come, first served? Or by whichever one put in the highest max bid, I guess...
I just put in what I'm willing to spend and let ebay do the bidding. I usually don't even log in at the end so I won't change my maximum bid. The way I look at it, if I miss it the first time around, there is always someelse selling what I want. It took me six times to finally win A Beautiful Season. I lost 5 auctions but eventually I won and I didn't pay more than I was willing to pay.
I love the Bay and use it all the time, but to get over the "gotta have it" feeling, I always check out the BST boards here first. Most of the time the prices are right in there with eBay, but I have managed to get some things for much less. Sometimes members here price low just to get rid of stuff.

When I sell stuff here (BST), I look up Ebay prices, subtract the Ebay fees, shipping supplies, and pure PITA cost factor and that's how I come up with my price.

I keep a list of retired items (with original catalog price) and give it to my DH each time a gift-giving occasion arises. I tell him the ones I really want and/or those that are hard to find but leave the spending up to him. I don't think I could resist the temptation of E-Bay (so much so that I won't even get a paypal account - it would make it so much easier to shop online and that would be very, very bad for my budget).
The sniping service is the BEST advice. I use auction sniper, but I truly think they are about the same. I figure my highest big and then forget about it. If I get an e-mail saying I won---GREAT---if not, then try again. With auction sniper, they also have a mutiple bid service, that you add all the auctions for a particular item. If you do not win the first auction, it will bid on the second, and only stop when it runs out of auctions or you win. I have gotten things cheaper, because I did not win an auction that closed at 2:00pm, but did win an auction that closed at 11:00pm (I guess not as many bidders)!
I am the high bidder on an item on Ebay right now. It is a retired SU set that I'd love to have but I won't over pay for it. The same set was on Ebay recently and I was at work when it was ending (I was asked to stay later - I had intended to be home at the end time) and my husband bid up to $41.50 for it. I am so glad he was outbid. I would have never paid that much for a stamp set no matter how much I love it!
So far no one else has bid on the set but I'm sure there are watchers who will out bid me closer to the end time of the item. I've decided how much is the most I'll pay and if it reaches that point, I back down. It takes a lot of discipline to do it but I do. I've never used a bidding service and I'm not sure how they work but I may have to look into it. I like the idea of putting in your max and then letting it go.

I don't understand the difference between putting in your max at ebay and then letting it go, or putting in your max at a sniping service and letting it go. Unless the sniping service doesn't even begin to bid until the last minute or so?
I few months back I was researching ink pad storage and decided that "I Had to Have" one of those Dzyntec clear acrylic ink storage units that people on SCS have and love. I came across a seller on eBay who was selling one and I had decided on a set amount. My bid was the ONLY bid for 2-3 days (and very low price at that). The final few hours of bidding, two other "bidders" drove the price up and I succumbed (dummy) and paid way more than I should have including s/h. Needless to say, on a lark I posted an ISO for the same item minutes after I won the eBay item and someone here offered me two units for the price of the one I paid for on eBay! LOL! I told my husband, and he just grinned....thank goodness I have a job, right? I needed three of those anyway...
I learned my lesson. Now, I only look for things I think I need right here on SCS and if I can't find it, oh well....

If you're leary of Ebay then BST would be best for you. I've never used it (buy or sell) but might in the future if posters are willing to wait for a mailed check - I have a PayPal account but am leary of using it. The set I'm currently bidding on prefers PayPal but will take a check or mo.

Your bid is held for you on the sniping web site and not actually submitted to ebay until just seconds before the end of the auction. So you don't tip your hand that you're interested, and there's much less chance of a bidding war.
I also wanted to put a vote in to try the BST boards first. If you don't find what you want, post a ISO. There are many of us out there with hundreds of sets to unload but don't like to pay ebay fees so we sell in other ways, like BST. If you don't get what you want right away, then try the Bay.

Ebay is o.k., you just need to be careful. I was a power seller for many years, but the fees and rules have gotten so difficult for a smaller seller. I usually try my retired sets on the BST or on my blog and then once I get sick of looking at them, I will do a huge lot to Ebay. If you are willing to ship overseas, you increase your selling potential. In the years I did Ebay (and over 6000 transactions), I NEVER had a problem with my international buyers. A few problems in the US, but generally people are pretty fair and honest.

Actually Auction Sniper is not free, I've been using it for years, and although I got a bunch of free snipes when I first signed up and for referrals, you do get charged a small fee for auctions won.

I can relate - if it's a set I really want, I have a tendency to go a little crazy in the last few minutes. I think it's part adrenaline, and part competitiveness. I just want to win, even though I'm paying out in the end. LOL.

Although when I bought it they were going for $40 and up...and I just held out for about 2 months and one sold for $18...to ME. One thing I do is search descriptions instead of only titles...I got two other rare sets cheap from one seller because they were not listed with Stampin Up in the title, only in the description.

Just an aside: If you are afraid of using Paypal, get the security key fob from them. No one can access your account without the key fob security code which changes every time you punch the button. It only costs $5, but gives you peace of mind.

Someone told me about the Webstore website last year and I've bought a few retired SU! sets from there. The prices are often cheaper than eBay - definitely worth checking the site out!
For those of you wanting to sell SU! sets, I think Webstore is free - no fees!
