I have purchased used stamps before, and some arrived barely recognizable. :( Ultra Clean was the only thing that cut through the gunk. In fact, it made some of the stamps like new! Fabulous stamp cleaner.
Fill a saucer with a small pool of UC, let the stamp soak rubber-side down for a few minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush (don't worry about hurting your stamps while scrubbing... rubber is extremely resilient) and then tap on a wet paper towel until all cleaner is removed, and tap on a dry paper towel to dry. Hope this helps.
Another good one is Kiss Off. It comes in a tube, sort of looks like lip balm on steroids. You can find it at Michael's over with the artist brushes and cleaners. Dampen the rubber on a wet towel, rub the Kiss Off on it and let it sit for a bit. Grab an old toothbrush and scrub up a lather and then wipe off. I've seen it work miracles...
This sounds kind of weird but Versamark shifts a lot! One of my stamps came back to me very stained from a round robin activity and I tried everything to shift it - still stained. I read here on SCS about using Versamark and thought it sounded unlikely but worth a go!
Just dab Versamark on your stamp and leave it for quarter of an hour or so then use an ordinary stamp cleaner or a little mild dish soap and water and an old toothbrush. It might just work for you!
I'd also say that if the stamp is still stamping a clear impression then you don't need to worry too much about getting rid of every last bit of staining.
I got turned on to a cleaner called Motsenbocker's Lift Off 3..It's basically a graffiti remover and I got it at Home Depot, I think in the cleaner area. Sorry about the vaguness as to what area- all I know is that it's on an isle behind and to the right of the paint department. I wouldn't say it's perfect, but it does a nice job. I'll have to try the Ultra Clean.
Sorry for my ignorance, bit I have no idea what TSP or TAC means, and the only retailer mentioned herein I've ever heard of is Home Depot! Sorry, but more info., please......

I'm also stumped on what TSP means (it's Thrift Savings Plan to me LOL!)
But TAC is The Angel Company which is a direct sales stamp company like Stampin' Up! or Close To My Heart.

I'll take a guess that TSP stands for trisodium phosphate, which is a cleaning agent sold with hardware/paint supplies. It's used for cleaning things such as mildew on wooden surfaces. I've never tried anything that strong on my stamps, though.
TSP is Trisodiumphosphate (Tri-Sodium-Phosphate) a material used to prep walls before painting. Is it really safe to use this stuff on rubber?
TSP is a wonderful cleaner for all sorts of things, walls included. It is VERY harsh and ruins your hands if you don't wear gloves, so I'm thinking it wouldn't be very good for my stamps. I've used Kiss Off also and I think it cleans the stained stamps very well and doesn't seem to harm the rubber, easy on the hands too. Good Luck, g
It's TAC (Ultra Clean) all the way for me! Works on EVERYTHING!
Thanks for clarifying, Diane. I was 98% sure our cleaner was Ultra Clean branded for TAC, but the 2% doubt was enough to make me hesitate saying so. Now I won't doubt myself if this question comes up again
I love Ultra-Clean, but sometimes I need something a bit stronger to soak it off. I use Awesome from the Dollar Tree. $1 - lasts forever.....make sure to rinse off well and most old ink comes clean.

I'm surprised Awesome and Simple Green work for y'all. I tried them both and neither worked at all for removing heavy stains. That's why I upgraded to Ultra Clean. Hmm...
