Remember that cool "Candy Corn Tree" stamp...oyyyyy what was I thinking!
Just in case you missed the thread this is the image that I am talking about and this was the amazing card that was done using this stamp. I think a lot of people were inspired and purchased the stamp...I was one of those people!
Now let me say, I LOVE this stamp and in no way am I trying to say otherwise...it is just that I cannot come up with any way to color it and do the image justice. I am struggling with the background and just cannot achieve the look I am after. I have tried sponging and prismacolor pencils...the problem is trying to get in between those branches and little candy corns...wow! Let's just say MANY "trial and errors" are in the circular file.
Anyone else that bought this stamp struggling or am I just being too picky. Would love to see what you have come up with!
That stamp is super cute! Have you thought about maybe doing a cloud background and then stamping your image? Here is a card that I made with a cloud background to give you an idea. It's a great stamp, and I'm sure you will figure it out once you play with it more!
You could color the tree then color it with an embossing marker and emboss it with clear powder, thus enabling you to do the background with sponging or a brayer or whatever or you could cut the image out and mount it on the background. CUTE image. I would love to play with it.
At the risk of sounding kind of stupid...when I stamped over the background done in dark blue for instance (nighttime) wouldn't I have a blue tree and candy corn too?

This is a good idea but I think cutting this out would be a nightmare...there is a lot of intricate detail. BTW, if you send me your address, I would be glad to send you a few stamped images!
And I love the "cloud" idea, I have actually done this before myself, but this image just screams nighttime to me and I think it must be dark (because of the moon). I guess I am just being too @nal!
Not sure but it looks to me like the card you found actually has cut out candy corn pop-dotted onto the stamped tree? I would need many cocktails to get through a task like that. ;)

Oh, I wasn't even planning on going there...way too much maintenance for me. Kudos to her though, it looks very cool!

How about this part of her suggestion? This would mask the tree and you could colour or sponge over it with abandon.
Hmm.. i agree with some of the other ladies. I think if you want the look the other lady achieved you're gonna have to cut them all out!! It wouldn't be THAT difficult...
What I would do is color the sky with markers (like copic BG10, or B000 or something) and maybe do some shading near the tree trunk etc, then color in the candy corns...

That is a cute stamp. I think that morganreiss is correct, the candy corn is popped out. You know, this would be a good stamp to use the spotlight technique.;) Just a thought.

Another thing you can do if you really do not want to cut them out is, you could stamp this on watercolour paper, colour the candy corn and tree, and then paint masking fluid (sold at Michaels next to the watercolours, or at any art store) over everything you coloured, and THEN watercolour the background.
But I thinking cutting out the candy corn would be easier than painting this twice (once for the colour and once for the masking fluid). Plus if you cut them out you won't have to be exposed to masking-fluid fumes.
I definitely know that she has "popped" the candy corn. I also see that she completely sponged (or whatever) the entire image and then used the cut out candy corn pieces on top...don't get me wrong, I love her card but I don't have any intention of cutting out about 50 candy corns...my question was specifically about the background!
I would be inclined to use watercolour pencils or crayons. The embossed outline provides a barrier for when you use the brush to move the colour around.
Looking at the enlarged version of the second picture on the blog makes me wonder how on earth she prevented the sponged colour from getting all over the tree trunk and branches. If she had the patience to cut out all those candy corns then cutting out a mask might not be inconceivable. Or perhaps the brown is strong enough to go over the sponging. The tree trunk does seem to have a dappled effect.

I just checked out the card again and clicked on the picture of the candy corn (where it's turned a bit) and it zooms it and you can see that her base candy corns have blue on them. I got this stamp also and haven't had time to play, so I'm following this message.

Color your tree and your candy corn....take a versamark pen and versamark the tree and candy....they use clear embossing powder to emboss....you can then sponge on die ink and it will wipe right off the spots that have been embossed.....you wont have to worry about getting color on the corn or tree.

Can you versamark over Copics without bleeding them? I use Copic markers to color mine.

tdodd00 - I remember that thread and card. Cute, but way more work than I wanted. Instead, I did something a little different and went with the limitless limbs set by Pink Cat (not associated with them, just a customer). With limitless limbs, I can decide how much decorating I do/don't want to deal with, location of decs, type, etc - much more flexible. Just another option. Sorry for your frustration; I'm sure it'll be cute when you finish it.

I don't think she did the background first, I think she stamped (and embossed), THEN sponged the colours (not worrying about if she got colour on the tree because YES, you can see the blue and green speckles on the tree trunk), then attached the candy corns on the tree with dimensionals...
whatever way.. i would still colour with copics..

That's what I was gonna suggest-Zindorf uses this technique to get a BG behind some of her beautifully colored images.

I was doing a little gallery gazing and found a card very similar to the one by Wendalynn. Here's a link to it. It looks very similar to the first one (at least on this screen, which isn't the best). It's exquisite. Since this is in an SCS gallery, perhaps you could PM the member with any questions; her username is diannep575. I don't know her. I hope I'm not offering something I shouldn't.

I love the cloud background idea! I do not have that particular IO image (although I do have nearly every other one, LOL!). The clouds would be a great background for lots of other stamps, too. I DO have the truffle tree by IO, and a few other tree images. I think it would look great with pine trees too!
Okay, I finally did it...actually created a card that was "post worthy". I will change a few things next time but overall I think it turned out okay. You can find it in my gallery or stop by my blog. Thanks for all the input!
diannep, your card is an absolutle vision! Your hard work paid off and it truly shines - your grandson is very lucky to receive such a treat! That's a real beauty!
Your card turned out beautifully! I have a suggestion if you want to use a dark background, although I don't know how well it would work, but I've done similar and it worked out fine. Let's say you start with a dark blue background, stamp the image and emboss in black, or clear. Then use a small paintbrush and bleach to bleach out the inside of the candy corn and tree. Then you could colour when it's all dry.
