I'm suddenly getting popup ads in the middle of my screen. I use Firefox, so I don't get them anywhere else. Well, except for one board where I'm not a paid member. Most boards give the option of an ad-free skin to paid members. Not here, I guess.
Daven posted about this in site suggestions the other day. He isn't a fan of these pop up ads, either. If you'll post a company name in this thread in site suggestions, he can look into them.
I have not had any pop ups but I have had banner ads that "fly" around. Very annoying and I've only had them here. Now I have not had them in a week so maybe they are gone.

I guess I didn't use the right term, yes, they're "flying banners" altho one was a box to take a survey. I'll make a note of the companies so that Daven can see about getting rid of them.
You gotta be kidding me, just posted this, and I got a flying Wii controller from Circuit City. I do have my pop up blocker turned back on, so that's not taking care of the problem.
I guess they're more "rollover" ads, and you have to be really careful where you're moving your mouse.

I've never got any of these ads, and when I get a notice of a PM...it typically says, "Pop-up not allowed" and I have to click on my mailbox to read the message. I'm using Explorer and have all Pop-ups disallowed so it always asks me if I want to allow a certain pop-up but only for things like PMs or on my work email account. Hmm.
I use FireFox and no pop-up ads here, or the roll-over ones either. The only problem I noticed one day was the big Googe Ads box at the top pushing everything else way down, but that was sorted out the same day. I don't think I've even met a flying ad, long may that last, LOL.
Hope you get sorted, though - anything like that is so irritating.

I just got the Circuit City one too. This is the first time I got one of these ads on here (I had posted earlier that I never get these, so this Circuit City ad was a surprise).

I had one that I couldn't get rid of. It landed in the middle of the screen. I couldn't get it to close. If that happens to you try this. (This is what I did.) X out of splitcoaststampers and then come back in again by retyping the address in the address bar.
I don't think these are pop-ups because I have a pretty good pop-up blocker. I don't even get pop-ups on myspace so I think they are some kind of moving banner ads. I had one that was hyper-blinking in the middle of the page as well but that one I could X out of.
Hope that helps, (the X out thing.)

I have Firefox with the NoScript addon, and I do not get flying banners or popups, just the flashing ads for the SCS member companies. If I check SCS on another computer I do see the other ads, so NoScript is definitely working for me.
For PM's, I don't get a popup saying that I have one, but the number next to my envelope at the top of the screen changes so I know there's one there. I also have it set to email me when I get a PM. So you don't have to get the popups in order to know about a PM.
HTH!

I'm wondering why some of you are getting them and some of us aren't (I am not getting them - popups or exploding banners)!
Anyone have a clue? This is the kind of computer stuff that drives me nuts!
I'm sure it has to do with the settings on each computer. I don't know if everyone has "NoScript" because it is an addon. Something to check into if you are getting popups with Firefox and want to avoid them.

I have seen expanding ads (annoying!!) and encourage you to report them to Daven. I do!
Here's his note from another thread:

if you ever see one of these ads (and I've seen a couple myself lately), post a note in here or send an email to me directly ([email protected]). include the name of the advertiser, and if you can, the site address that the ad leads you to. with that info we can remove the ad from the site.
some of you are reporting seeing "popups", some of you aren't. it's probably all in the definition. we've never allowed true "pop up" ads here and never will. I don't believe one has ever slipped by our notice, but I could be wrong.
what you might be seeing are what's more commonly known as expandable ads. those are almost as hideous as popups, not quite. typically you'll roll over, or click one of these ads and it will expand to cover part of your browser window. we've also been hit by a circuit city ad that seemed to be auto-expanding. fortunately I think we've got this one killed now.
nothing has changed in our attitude about these types of ads, if you're seeing more of them lately it's unfortunate and unintentional. we're always on the lookout for anything inappropriate, tacky, annoying, etc. and try to get them removed as soon as possible.
I saw a circuit city one on the top of the gallery over the weekend. I have only seen one other one of these expandable devils on here at the bottom of a forum page but didn't pay attention towhose it was.
I have firefox and I mentioned this 2 weeks ago, it only happens on this site and it was driving me crazy. expandable ads, without even going near it.
