Default TLC185 Embossed Shimmer {9-8-08}

I must have been a magpie in a former life (if I believed in that stuff) because I am so attracted to shiny, shimmery and glittery objects. I'm consistently drawn to them and it's for that reason that I bring you today's technique, Embossed Shimmer. I first heard about this technique from Pat Huntoon back in 2007. I was really attracted to his technique because (a) it was easy, and (b) I loved the shimmer that it added to the project.

Ready? Ok, here we go!

For this challenge you will need the following:
Embossing Folder or other embossing device
White Lumiere Paint - an alternative to this would be to mix white acrylic paint or white gesso with pearl colored Pearl Ex - however, Lumiere works best because its properties allow it to dry on nonporous surfaces yet remain flexible and soft (resists cracking.
Stipple Brush
2 or 3 dye reinkers
Either a paint palette, discarded CD or a Styrofoam plate

1. Cut your acetate to the size of your card (normally 4-1/4 X 5-1/2")

2. Place about 1/2 tablespoon of Lumiere into palette or plate

3. Place two or three drops of your first reinker into another well of your palette or on the other side of your plate (depending on what you are using)

4. Using your stipple brush, dip the bristles first into your lightest color of ink and then picking up some of your Lumiere, stipple (bouncing) the color mix onto your acetate - leave some open areas.

5. Repeat #4 with your second (darker) color of reinker in the open areas left from step 4. At this point you will want to make sure that any unpainted areas of the acetate are fully covered with paint. (if you are using a 3rd color of reinker, continue the steps with your third and darkest color

6. Now this is the hardest part....WAIT FOR THIS TO FULLY DRY. sigh...

7. After you have cleaned your house, done the shopping and laundry, you are now ready to proceed (it really won't take that long to dry, but you DO want it to be completely dry before going onto step

8. Run your painted acetate sheet through the Cuttlebug (or whatever machine you use) in your selected embossing folder with the painted side down (facing the bottom of you embossing folder) You can probably see at this point why using Lumiere is preferred due to the shaping of the acetate (to avoid the possibility of the acrylic paint cracking

Now you are ready to finish your project as you like. I have found that with the acetate coated with the lumiere/reinker mixture makes it a little tricky to stick with regular adhesive. One idea would be to attach the acetate with brads or eyelets

Here is my SAMPLE (I'm having some computer issues, so please forget the BIG link TLC185 Embossed Shimmer by Lynn in St. Louis at Splitcoaststampers

Sounds interesting and fun. Unfortunately, I don't have any Pearl Ex or Lumiere. I'll enjoy looking at everyone else's creations, though. Thanks, Lynn, for this new technique.

Yikes! I don't have any of this stuff, and since I pretty much have to order everything online, I guess I will tuck these instructions away for another day. Sorry I won't get to play this time, but can't wait to see what everyone else posts!

I am so bad, now I remember your instructions last week telling us what supplies we would need for this weeks TLC and guess what I forgot to pick up at the LSS? You guessed it. I will have to enjoy everyone else's projects on this one as my nearest store is 40mile away and my next day off is Sunday. :( can you see my pouting?

Very cool challenge! And I have the stuff, so I'll get started now! I always knew there would be a use for that Lumiere paint at some point! Thanks for the opportunity to use it!

Very interesting - I couldn't find the lumiere paint, but will try another paint and see what happens - thanks, Lynn - you're coming up with some pretty cool stuff!

I have never heard of this technique before! How fun! I bought a bottle of white Lumiere paint a million years ago and have yet to use it! Guess I gotta crack that baby open! Now . . . off to find some acetate . . .

I had my white fabric paint out and ready, but after reading your instructions, Lynn, I've tried it with silver acrylic paint. Mind you, I don't have any re-inkers, so I've tried alcohol ink to colour it...so I'll give it a couple of hours to dry and see how it goes. It certainly sounds like fun, and given that I got my mum's old pasta machine when I was visiting my dad a couple of weekends ago, and bought one embossing folder to try out, I'm game to give it a try.

Hmmmmm.... don't have any Lumiere or anything like it, don't have a Cuttlebug or any other embosser (other than these two hands  ).
But I LOVE the effect.

Going to put my thinking cap on -- if massage oil can do the jjust as well as OMS (last week's technique), I'm betting I can find something that might come close. Time to dig into my box of acrylic finishes and paints, I think!

I don't have Lumere paint or pearl ex either. I knew to look for it in advance, but Michaels nor my LSS didn't have any. They said they could order some for me, but I declined since I knew it wouldn't arrive in time for the challenge. However, this technique does look interesting, so if I see a lot of great cards, I might just have to have put my order in!

Awesome looking technique. I have ALL the supplies (including about 8 colors of lumiere), so I'd better play, huh?

Lynn, did you put the painted side up or down on your sample, which is awesome, BTW?

Hi Lynn!

This challenge (as usual) sounds very cool, but I don't have an embossing folder or proper stipple brush.:(

I'm wondering, will this work with a Classy Brass Embossing Plate and a stylus if I do it by hand? Also, will any stiff-bristled paintbrush work?

I suppose I could just go try it and see, but if you or anyone has any info or ideas, I'd be interested to hear input.

Thanks! Can't wait to see all the results!

I have the cricut but I'm not the luminier. I do have something called LuminArte that I think I'll try if I can find some acetate (not sure if I have it but I do have the plastic that covers the sticky sheet for my Cuttlebug so I might try cutting that and using it, it might be acetate). Guess we have to get creative at times!

I tried my idea and it did not work. LuminArt is solid shimmer paint which you need to wet to liquify (some) and works well on dark cardstock but did not work well on "acetate" (my plastic sheet). This sounds like a good idea and the samples are lovely but I, too, can't afford to run out and buy supplies today (see post below by gtgirlee).

Great challenge Lynn. Can't wait to see what everyone creates
Me either! I will say that while I enjoyed last weeks challenge I spent $27.00 in supplies which I can not afford to do every week! This technique is really neat as well but not one that could really be accomodated without some means of embossing and numerous other items that I don't think I would buy just for one project. I would love to see some still new and difficult challenges that didn't require me to spend so much on all new items.

This is a gorgeous technique. Unfortunately no lumiere, or pearl ex or cuttlebug maching or any other embossing machine. I sure sound deprived.:( I will enjoy seeing what every one creates.
