OK ladies, I live close to the coast of NC. As you ALL probably know we are about to be hit by a small hurricane. This isn't the one I'm worried about! It's the one coming NEXT week (Ike) that has me nervous. Anyway, what would you, as a stamper/scrapbooker, pack if you had a truck and a camper you could pack? I mean, besides the essentials - kids, clothes, food, DH....
I would take every scrapbook and pictures and leave the rest. My scrap stuff is covered in my homeowners policy. Also a CD of what is on my computer-and my computer!
I'm on the east coast of FL and I'm also watching Ike. I've been thinking about doing some packing this weekend, depending on the track he takes. I don't have a camper but all I'm going to worry about taking are important papers and pictures. Anything that can not be "replaced", if that makes sense.
I used to live in the panhandle so I've been there.
I'd leave the replaceable items and pack what can fit.
But space was an issue for us with three kids and a dog and a cat so I couldn't take it all.
You could possible use a roof top carrier on your vehicle, but you may encounter rain, so be careful of that of course.
Whatever you can't take that is irreplaceable put in plastic storage containers and in the safer places in your house. I think places you might go in a tornado, such as a closet or hall away from a window.
Other places I used to store things: in the washing machine and dryer, in the vehicle we didn't take which we put in the garage.
I pray you, your family and your belongings fare well in these storms....
First I would pack, like one the posters above said Scrapbooks, completed or in process, pictures (these are almost irreplaceable) then my essentials tools, (those I cant live without), then I would start with my pricier things and keeping moving down the line.
As for paper/CS, I probably would not worry about those too much, because paper/cs keeps evolving and there is always something new, and these can be easily replaced with newer updated styles.

I was just thinking I should probably take some pics of all my stuff and store that. Pics I'm not TOO worried about since I have them on my external HD which will fit in my sock drawer in the camper.....

I put our photos in waterproof containers and move them to a safer area in the house well off the floor in case of flooding. We have always stayed, but if Ike is still a 4 and heading for us, this time we will head up north. Unfortunately there won't be room for stamping stuff.
We are on the NC coast too. =)
If we leave, I will take all of our home movies/pictures. Besides that, just whatever we would normally take on vacation.
My Homeowner's Policy would cover most of my 'stuff' but I'd definitely take my laptop and EHD and the DVDs that I've burned for back-ups. I have a scary large reference book collection with a number of rare, out of print volumes. Those would go with me. I'd only take two scrapbooks, because they have photos that cannot be replaced in them. I'd focus on the things that couldn't ever be replaced, no matter how much money was available from insurance.
canben - You've put a real "face" to all these numbers of people that the horrible storms are affecting. I'll be praying for you and your family! When it's all over, please be sure to tell us how you fared.
First of all - I pray that you and your family will be safe..things can always be replaced. A few times in my life I have had a potential threat of fire so I made a list which changes and evolves over the years. It is not only what to take, but what to do and in what order. It helps with my peace of mind.
After you have the essentials you already know about - don't forget to back up your computer and take that back up with you. I use external drives - just bought a new one with a terabyte of memory.
For scrapbooking and stamping - start with the basics and build as you decide what you can't do without for a period of time or what cannot be replaced. Don't forget envelopes and postage stamps! I'd take my box of paper scraps and my new Big Shot and my punches - using the time to cut or punch shapes for use in a less stressful time.
I agree - anything that's irreplaceable (it's amazing how much 'stuff' IS replaceable!). Pictures and important papers are the things I'd grab in case of a catastrophe. My thoughts and prayers are with you, too.
I would be screwed because it took 14 large rubbermaid boxes to move my craft stuff in this house - and I couldn't leave it behind because if we had to file a claim there would be NO WAY my Dh would allow me to spend as much money as I did to replace it all.
I live in central florida and i have also started thinking about what i would take.when Floyd was suppose to hit us as a catogory 5, i took all of my stamping and scrap books with me.But, I have added so many things since then,i would take all of my scrapbooks and my computer.
My kids, my dh, scrapbooks and photos/disks, any mementos that have sentimental value, (and my camera). Other than that....everything else can be replaced.
Hopefully Ike will turn out to be a dud and you won't have to evacuate. My prayers are with you.

I lived in Florida for 15 years, the last year we were there we had 4 hurricanes in 5 weeks. I got one Rubbermaid tote (a large one) and packed all pictures, photo albums, and scrapbooks into it, as well as CDs that had pictures and files on them. I also packed a video of our house and contents, focusing A LOT on my stamp room and all cabinets and drawers open showing contents. I didn't have too much room for anything else since it was DH, DS, myself, 2 dogs and a cat all going too!
My prayers go out to all of you. Hopefully it won't be too bad, maybe a last minute turn!
We are here in Melbourne and have begun thinking about what to take if we evacuate. Obviously we'd take our computers & external hard drive as well as pictures and other important documents.
Fortunately we won't be going very far - his parents live about three miles from us & they have an extremely well built garage on their property where we would ride out the storm if necessary. They also have a generator in case the power goes out.
My biggest concern is that I probably won't be able to get to my house in Orlando to board it up. :(
I pray for your safety. As to posessions, we just went through the midwest floods, rubber totes if tipped on side do leak so seal it up well with duct tape and leave it. take backups of computer and pictures, scrapbooks that can't be replaced. Take a lot of pictures of all of it now and take them with you. The "things" are replaceable don't be concerned with that. Leave early, and try to relax, God has a plan for everything and try as we want we can't change it so make the best of life's journey. Let us know how you make out and remember. There will always be someone less fortunate than you in the end. I don't mean for that to be a cold thought but a comfort for whatever is to be.
I didn't read through every post, but it would be a good idea to take a picture of everything that you own, even inside all of your drawers and cabinets for reference in case you need to replace things. That way you have proof and a reminder as you need to make lists. It's amazing the things that you can forget about, especially in times of stress.

I think you're right, but yesterday when I posted it was showing Ike following exactly in Hanna's path and at a cat4 when it was where Hanna was yesterday! I was thinking "Dennis/Floyd" all over again! (for those that don't know/remember - back in 1999, we had a tropical storm (Dennis) hit us and dumped a BUNCH of rain. Then Floyd came through and pushed all the water up into the rivers. We (my town) was completely cut off from the rest of the country. The only way in or out was by plane. The most memorable scene from those events was the pic of the pigs and cows on top of barns with other dead animals floating around them....)
Just did this for the California fires last fall. Besides kids and husband, take food, water, blakets, warm clothes and medicines. Take irreplaceable paper work, deed to house, insurance papers, retirement fund papers, etc.
Take hard drive of computer. Then pack irreplaceable pictures and keepsakes and family heirlooms. Leave anything that can be replaced. You don't have time for it. Take your cell phone and if you and your husband each drive a car, designate a relative in another part of the country to be your contact point. The last thing before you leave with your digital camera, take pictures of your home and belongings left behind. Then drive out of your dirveway and pray. We returned two days later and our home was intact. We were very lucky. Good luck to you.

You guys ok? Did you end up evacuating or stick it out? Here in Raleigh...we are currently getting Hanna rain and wind. It's not too bad, but we have got around 5 inches of rain here. The wind is making me a bit nervous as I live in a wooded area near a lake and creek so the ground is saturated and this is combination often ends up with a tree falling. Do let us know how you are!
I hope everyone makes it thru Hanna okay.It spared us here in Central Florida, thank goodness because some areas here are still dealing with the flooding that Fay left us.Thank god my home is high off the ground !!
It looks like you guys will be spared from Ike. It is headed to the Gulf. We still don't have power from Gustav and now we have to watch out for Ike. As for stamping stuff, I wouldn't pack anything. Take pictures or scrapbooks and things that can't be replaced. After dealing with Katrina, you realize that material things aren't worth it. Only irreplacable things and loved ones are what really matter.
I agree Amanda, We, too, went through Katrina here on the MS Gulf coast and it wiped our coastline clean of homes, business' and more importantly, lives! Things, no matter how dear, can be lived without. I cannot think about living without my family... We are now facing Ike... Gustave just gave us gusty winds and lots of rain.. Ike looks like it is going to be more of a threat..
Its a wait and see situation...

I agree. And it is a good idea to take a digital camera with pictures of all your supplies & personal items in the house so you have records of what you have. Lists of items you own if you have that. But I would just take the items you can't replace as stated above.
