Default TLC184 Black Magic {09/01/08}

Hello and Happy Labor Day to all of you Americans. It's time for another Technique Lovers Challenge. Are you ready?

Supplies you will need for this week are:
Prismacolor pencils & Gamsol or other brand of Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) If you don’t have these items, regular colored pencils and baby oil may be substituted
White or Vanilla Craft Ink
Dark Cardstock
Stamps with open areas suitable for coloring

I have seen this technique around, although I don’t know who actually originated it, but wanted to share it with you. I hope you have the necessary supplies to give this a try because once you do, I think you’ll be surprised at how much you will love it and you’ll be searching your images for the best possible ones to highlight that old black magic.

Start with your dark cardstock. I used black because it shows off the technique best.

Stamp your images with white or vanilla craft ink, although any bright, light color of pigment ink should also work well. Let dry.

Pour some OMS into a small glass container. I found a small glass container at a local beauty supply store, one that is used in nail salons that holds the solution used to apply acrylic nails. I gave up acrylic nails a while ago because they just interfered with my crafting…lol. Bless those of you who have the skill to work in them, I just don’t possess that skill…but I digress.

OMS is odorless mineral spirits. Gamsol is one brand name, sold at Dick Blick or similar art stores. Michael's also carries OMS under the brand name of Mona Lisa. Althought I have not tied Goo Gone, I have also read that this works as a blender too.(Read more about this topic here)

Dip the tip of your colored pencil right into the OMS. This will soften the color so that it glides onto the cardstock smoothly and with rich color.

Color your images as you like, making sure not to color over your white stamped lines. PRESTO…you’ll see that old black magic appear right before your very eyes! The contrast of the bright colors from your pencils on the black cardstock will be striking. Once you are finished and your pencils dry from the OMS, I recommend that you sharpen your pencils to remove any OMS that may be left.

I hope you will try this technique. Be sure to use TLC184 in your keywords when you upload.

Looking ahead: If you don’t already have White Lumiere Paint, you may want to pick some up for next week’s challenge.

Thanks, Lynn. Never tried it this way, should be fun.

Edit to add: I must admit, I'm getting a better look without using the OMS. Can I still call it Black Magic? (I know it as Pencil over Ink technique)

Hmm, I don't have Prisma pencils but I did discover last week that my Couleur D'Art pencils worked with Sansodor (low odour mineral spirits that I have in the house), so I'll give it a go. If I don't post a card, then it didn't work but I'm game to give it a go.
With you on the nails, I don't know how people manage with them, LOL. Anyway I hate them clicking on the piano so I keep them short.

I did something very similar to this in a class once and have been thinking about trying it again. The only difference was that we used gold embossing for the stamped image and colored with colored pencils without OMS. It was such a cool look! Thanks for the challenge. Will work on mine sometime today.

Hi! Wow! GREAT Technique!!! I stepped it up by cutting and layering...I LOVE this effect...It has as very similar outcome as the custom paint process for cars. It's done by layering paint colors, most of the time it's an extra 3 coats of paint, including a black layer to get that DEEP look! WOW!

Here's today's submission!

Wow! This looks like a great technique. I just bought some OMS so as soon as I get my weeding done in the garden I'm going to give this a try. Love your sample. Thanks so much for the challenge.

Hey, what about us Canadians? We have Labour Day here too! (it's just spelled differently!)
A question.........can you use different colors to blend then together, or does that not work? For example, coloring the center of a flower a lighter color and making it blend evenly into the darker part.
