I'm with you. I don't understand the appeal. There was a stack pack of beautiful designer paper at Michaels by My Minds Eye, but quite a few of the patterns were skull and crossbones, even in pastels, lol.

I guess I'm just o-l-d.

They're not my cup of tea either, but they must be popular with some people. I just, honestly, don't know who because I don't know any crafters, except one person, who uses anything like them.

I personally feel they are demonic and will not purchase them. To be honest, I was surprised to see SU selling a skull and cross bones set in the new catalog. I know they are very popular. And to each his own. It is most likely a fad and will eventually fade over time.

I'm not into the whole skull and crossbones either. I love everything else in that set (especially the cherries!), but won't get it cuz I hate the skull.

It reminds me of death or the devil or something - LOL! I'm not superstitious or anything, but they scare me. I guess people see something in them. It is funny to see "heart" eyes

I really love them and so does my teenaged daughter. They've been "chic" for several years now in scrapbooking, paper arts, fashion, and home decor

They're partly from tattoo art, partly from "Dia De La Muerte" art, partly from the occult, partly from punk/goth. I actually remember the skulls & roses theme from the Grateful Dead albums!

I haven't seen the SU set though.

They aren't my style either, but I think most companies are just trying to reach everyone, from all walks of life ...... it seems kids are even scrapbooking and stamping these days. I have a 13 year old and she loved the skull/crossbones with cherries, the more girly girl one. It's nice to know if you are looking for SOMETHING - be it skulls or butterflies or both mixed together <g>, someone will come up with it!

Just why is there a cherry in that set, anyway? If you look at the samples on that page in the catty, they don't use the cherry with the skull, but they use the cherry on another card with another set.... if I'm not mistaken. Am I missing something with skulls and cherries? It's like... aww, that skull is too scary... now, wait... put a cherry on its head... MUCH BETTER... how cute!

I think they combined the cherries to make it more girl friendly.

Lisa, you are too funny!

It's just the crossbones I don't like. Skulls by themselves are okay. I prefer the realistic images of skulls though, with cross-hatch shadows etc. (no heart eye sockets!!!)

Interesting thread! They are not my "style" either, but I do think they are kind of fun! I can't think how I would use the set, though!

I don't see myself using the set, but if I had a teenage daughter I probably would (and if I had a teenage daughter we would have all sorts of other issues since I'm just in my 20's). It's very trendy right now. Just go to the Juniors section of any department store and you'll see tees with skulls with heart eyes and cherries, etc. Good for SU! for being on trend and having a little something for everyone.

I am with you, I find it an odd thing  to like anything that signifies dead bodies, even if they try to make it "cute"

I have never been a fan of trends. I have always gone for what I deem appropriate, never been one to go with the flow. Even when it came to buying my kids items. If I was paying, I needed to approve of the item. If it was going to be in my house, I needed to approve of the item. If they wanted something I did not deem appropriate, I explained why. Made them "think" about why they wanted it. Usually it was because everyone else had them, not really because "they" would have liked it other wise. Sandy O

I don't mind it for cards and stuff-- it's a popular theme and I can see it for teenager (or halloween) cards.

It drives me crazy on clothes. Why on earth would I let my 7yo daughter walk around with skulls and crossbones on her shirt? But don't get me started on kids fashions....

Funny thing, yesterday the kids were watching "Toy Story" and the evil kid next door that vandalized the toys -- they showed a closeup of the kid's Tshirt and it was a skull and crossbones. Too funny!

I know they are popular, but the only reason I would use it would be for pirate stuff.

I think they're cute, but I really have no use for them. My kids are a little young to use them for their scrapbook pages. I don't see myself making a card for any of my friends with them either.

They're not my thing. But, I see them more with the middle-school set. You know more along the goth(I think they still call it that) look.

I was looking for something to make Halloween cards for young children. It was very hard to find anything without the skull and crossbones. I don't think they're appropriate for young children, so I didn't buy them and won't. I don't have any teens to make anything for, so they're lost on me! I really don't like them, even if I had a use for them. I like "cute" for Halloween!

They don't appeal to me either. I am more into the jack-o-lantern, candy corn Halloween stuff.....nothing witchy, spidery or spooky.

To me, skulls and crossbones represent death, and I do not celebrate death, since that is satanic. (I'm not into pirates, either, since they're just glorified robbers and murderers. I know; I'm a square.) The only time I could ever imagine using the skulls and crossbones, is if I were labeling a bottle of poison!

Celebrating death isn't Satanic unless you let it be. Many other cultures celebrate the dead is a bright and cheerful way. Take Day Of The Dead, or Dia de los Muertos. Its a Mexican celebration of the dead that starts Nov 1 and is celebrated until Nov 2nd. Candy sugar skulls are colorful decorated, processions are made, and its a lively and respected way of showing your love for those who have passed on. There is music and food and the families go to the graveyards of the dead to show they still love and think of them.

My daughter even has a pair of Sketchers slip on shoes that are covered with the candy skulls used in the Dia de los Muertos festivities. Living in Los Angeles, everyone around here thinks they are cool. I guess its because we get what they symbolize.

I don't like them either. I really really don't like the halloween scrapbook page in the catalog with the little boy being frankenstein. But I am also not a fan of the freaky halloween costumes that are being sold in stores.

I think it all comes from the "EMO" craze (emo is short from emotional) and it is a derrivative of modern punk. One store that started alot of the garments with skulls etc is Hot Topic: http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/hom...34374302028372

These stores are in malls all over America. While I'm really glad my kids don't like the stuff, I think the appeal is that it's all so "random"! Cute little girls with hearts and bows paired with skulls, get it? (ok, neither do I.)

I think they're fun - it's very rock-n'-roll....which many people are into. And with the hearts on the eyes, you can make them fun for halloween or something. They're trendy, and they don't have to scare you - with a little creativity you can use them lots of ways.

And like someone else said, they don't have to be for everyone - something different for another genre of stampers isn't such a bad thing. It expands the repetoir of the SU! catalog and opens up the stamping world for people who like that style when they may not have found something they liked until now.

And I had to giggle at the sock monkey reference - he's creepy too? I guess it's like me and clowns, eh? Now THOSE freak me out! lol
