First of all, I take my hat off to all you creative card makers out there! Last night I decided I wanted to make 2 Thank you Cards for a couple of special people. I wanted something really nice so, I CASE'd a card from the gallery. I haven't uploaded mine yet but, here is the card I CASE'd because I loved it an wanted to use this stamp set. Tall True Friend
It took me 2 hours to make 2 cards.:rolleyes: So, how do you guys crank out all these beautiful cards all the time. What is the method to your madness. I have to know because I really want to make some detailed cards for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Do you always start with a sketch? Do you cut all the pieces of cardstock 1st? I'm greatful for any tips that you may have to share.;)
It depends. If I know the layout and exactly what I'm going to do, I can get a detailed card done in 15 to 20 minutes. If I have no idea what direction I'm going in, it could take me over an hour.
It generally takes me ~1-2 hours to make a card. I've been on a mission to use my massive stash of ribbon, paint chips, and cardstock/paint chips I texturised using my Big Shot, so it is like a limited supply challenge. Because I have so much fun finding ways to combine these elements, I totally don't mind that it takes me that long to finish a card front.
Hours and hours. Normally, I take a day per card, if not more. Sometimes I will start three cards, but it then takes me three days to finish all three.
The exceptions are "last-minute" cards, the ones where there is just one image stamped in front, and those still take me half an hour (to decide on the image, the paper, the colouring *rolling eyes*
I also spent two hours on one card last night! I had a hard time getting it just right. The night before, though, it only took me about 45 minutes to make a card, which was actually more detailed.
anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours.. if i am making a card with a large image that i'm coloring with copics, then that's the kind of card i will spend 2 hours on.. a simple 1 or 2 layer card, i'll spend less time.

HOURS! So when I make a design that I like, I make a bunch. I made 8 of the same thank you cards the other day because I liked the color, design and image so much. And that was one I CASE'd from the SU! catty. :rolleyes:
First one took about an hour. The next 7 also took an hour, but an hour total, not an hour each LOL~

Thats me too. I think deciding what I'm going to make takes longer than actually making it. But on average, if I've starting with nothing, about an hour or so.
Depends on complexity, technique, and originality of the design; every once in a while, I can turn out an original concept in 5-10 minutess, and other times, it can take me 2 hours to make the idea in my head come to life on paper to my satisfaction. :rolleyes:
I always start with a plan in my head, tho . . . I just never know initially if I'll end up with what was in my head! ROTFLMBO!

i almost never make just one card at a time, i "assembly line" them, but i give away packets of 6 cards to a large group of women i meet with, on their birthdays, so i need multiples.... (gotta have somewhere to send the cards, otherwise how do i justify buying new stuff! lol)
anyway, i tend to make 12 cards at a time. i usually make one to start, and then start the multiples. if it's a layering card, i'd cut all the pieces at once, then i'd stamp all the images at once, cut all the ribbon at once, etc....
i've timed it, and i average about a half hour per card, but i also watch tv while i work on my cards, so i get distracted from time to time......gotta love dvr and the "back" button, haha!
Usually a looooong time- anywhere from 2-3 hrs to days! I can start out with an idea and end up with something totally different. In my cardmaking, I swear I have ADD?!? Anyone else feel that way??
This varies a lot for me. I make many many cards in a short time when the design is fairly simple (this is one of the ways I get so many out to the troops). When I am making a card for someone special, it can take hours. I normally will design a card and then do an assembly line to make many of them for my projects.

I find myself choosing papers and embellishments and because I have so much stuff to choose from I sometimes have to put a card aside until i can decide what will make the card look best.
I like it better when an idea hits me in my sleep and I just up and create. It doesn't take long to put a card together when real inspiration hits.

I think this is a huge part of my problem! Way too much stuff. I probably spent an hour alone just picking out the right patterned paper and cardstock.
It's taken me all day to do a card before, but that's because I just happened to have the whole day to work on it, (Believe me, that doesn't happen much), but generally, it's a few hours, depending on how much detail there is.

It so depends on the card. If I case the idea, it can take me from 20 min to 2hours, depending on if I have the idea for my changes in my head or if I play with colors etc. This past week a girlfriend and myself made 100 memorial thank you's for a family that lost their 17 yr old daugher. She was a friend of our daughters and thought making a thank you with her picture on it would be something to keep. The front had her picture (2 x 3) mounted on a black layer, then mounted on a white later with "In loving Memory at the top and her name on the bottom. This was mounted on a white card, cuttlebugged the front, then a message from the family (printed out on the computer) mounted on a black layer on the inside. The flap of the enve was cuttlebugged to match the card. Each of us did 50 cards - took me about 5 1/2 - 6 hours. Cutting all the layers took the longest.
I'm glad you started this thread because I thought maybe I was the only one who took so long to make them!! I first have to go get some inspiration on SCS and "I'll just look at a couple gallery photos" turns into an hour. And I too have a case of the "want to use everything on every card."
Plus using the kitchen table means I should put all my stuff up every night and take it out the next time I work on a card...but let's just say we're using that dining room table more than we ever had before.
For me it's almost always an hour for a card if it's an original design. This morning was worse -- it took an hour and a half to make what actually turned out to be a simple anniversary card, and that was with choosing the papers last night! argh!
I should really do what you all are doing and make lots of the same design at the same time.

It takes me too long IMO. It can take from half an hour to a day. Once I find a layout I like I make a bunch. It also depends on long I stop while making a card to get on SCS to read forums, galleries, member companies etc. I also stop and play games on the computer. I am really into bowling right now.
Add me to the "half a day" group! I spent several hours today making a birthday card for my best friend which had to get in the mail today (no pressure there!). Let me say up front, I cased a card from Leslie Miller using one of the new Flourishes sets. Right off the bat, I lost a stamp and looked for it for over an hour. About to give it up as gone forever (after painstakingly going through the trash), I pick up one of my SU stamp pads and there it was stuck to the bottom of it.
That crisis averted, I embossed my sentiment. Well it warped the paper badly, so I had to do the main layer again. Couldn't find the stamp set I had just used earlier... another hunt ensued. After about six hours total, I got it addressed and off to the post office.
So I probably spend a couple of hours actually stamping a card, and four or more hours looking for things I just put down moments ago. I don't have a dedicated craft room and drag everything out into the kitchen and breakfast room. That is really a motivator to move everything down into my basement which needs a little more work to make it "finished" to my satisfaction. Hopefully that will be a near-term project!
A pile of scraps can motiviate me especially if I'm in a slump for an idea. I don't clean up very well after I make a mess so there are lots of wonderful colors and textures and patterns sitting there to sift through. Layouts are the most fun for me so they come quickly as I pick up a scrap and see how it fits with another. Create means *play* for me. I never imagine any masterpiece ahead in my mind, or nothing would happen for me. I'd sit all day for that to happen. Somehow in just playing with pieces of paper, great designs can just transpire. If a card takes you hours to do, just try having some fun with papers without some pre-conceived idea in mind. You might be surprised how quickly things can get on paper. Does that make sense to anyone but me in my *right brained madness*of a mind???
And the other thing I try to keep in mind is what am I going to do with these cards that took me hours to create? Do the recepients of these fabulous creations keep them forever?? Most likely NOT!

Glad to see that I am not the only one that takes HOURS to create a card... I would say usually 2.5 to 3 hrs... but depending on the technique and if I am familiar with it - well, it can easily take me longer...
I use to think that I take WAY too long - like there were rules or something... But now - I just want to Enjoy the Journey and be happy with what I make!

Usually anywhere from 1 to 2 1/2 hours. Anytime it starts getting much longer than that it means I am trying to get a bomb of a card to look good. I hate to give up.
It's the design stage that takes me the longest. Sometimes it comes right to me, other times I "fight" with my cards - when they just aren't right and I'm not sure how to fix it. Once the design is in place, I will make several and maybe switch up the colors or DP's. But yeah - 2 hours isn't unusual for me.
On weekends when I have a lot of time to sit on my fanny I can make a couple hundred cards when I do the assembly line thing. These are usually fairly simple but nice cards. Love to fill those boxes for the troops.

I guess it depends on if you count the time it takes me to decide on my materials, gather them up from where I keep them stashed, start cutting, punching, inking, think of some other tool that would work, go find that, work a bit more, decide something else would work better so go get that, work a bit more, take apart the bit I just put together because of a boo-boo (or figure out how to disguise it), finally finish the card.... AND THEN I HAVE TO CLEAN IT ALL UP.
Or are you just talking about actual time *making* the card?
The first option is hours and hours. The second is probably 30-45 minutes.
I am so jealous of all you ladies with dedicated stamping rooms/space. I live in a small condo and do not have the luxury of keeping my materials where I can easily access them. My supplies are kept in a corner of the kitchen and have to be put away completely whenever a project is complete or everyone would be eating on their knees in the living room... and my mother taught me better than that!

I am also very detail-oriented, so it takes me at least 3 hours to design a card and make a card. That is why I always make more than one of design... usually at least four of a kind. :-) LM

I love to see it takes some time depending on the design and detail. Sometimes I can whip one right up, in about 20-30 minutes, but that's not with much detail. I can take 2-3 hours on a card.
I need to start making several of a design I like! I made a pretty nice card the other day for a co-worker birthday and loved how it turned out. It took 2-3 hours. I combined a couple of techniques--Zellindorf with a recent Roxie sketch challenge. (Thanks SCS)!! I just love those two designers!! I didn't take a picture, but will try again.
The next month I devote to making several of one kind so I can sell in a small craft show. I keep thinking of my friend who does SU stamp camps and how she prepares for them--she cuts all the components out first or scores all the neat little boxes first so its easier for the campers.
Still takes time to prepare!

My average is about 30 minutes. My biggest hang up is the picture in my head does not always transfer to paper...plus the voices in my head keep interupting each other :rolleyes:
