Default ALTOID TINS

awhile back everyone was going crazy over the altoid tins, etc. I know they were in the DD gallery, but I was wondering if there was another way to see a few examples, instructions, etc on what to do with these? I have 20 (scheli is the bomb!) and they are just sitting here....someone help!

thanks!

Hi Steph,
I don't have pictures...I know, I know, I am technologically impaired! But here's what I am doing:
Trace around the top of the Altoids box onto cardstock. I have used white or vanilla. Stamp and color your impressions, just like you would do for a card or tag. Cut it out, just inside your tracing line, and adhere to the top of the tin with mono, or o'so' sticky tape sheets.
You could tie a ribbon with a bow around the cs before you adhere it, or add a multitude of other embellishments.
What I have done is adhere micro-beads all over the top with O'so sticky tape sheet, and that is beautiful.
I have also seen samples where the tin was painted a different color before adding all your cs and such.
I know pictures are much better, but I hope this helps!!

How would you paint one? I would think the paint would just quickly chip off since they are so smooth. Anyone know?

I used craft paint and for good measure sealed the inside and out with acrylic sealer. It seems to work. It's definitely not easy to get the paint back off after you've sprayed it on. I've done two so far and used tracing paper to trace the outline on the gum tin and cut the paper that size so the copper would show on the top as well as the sides. Wish I had pictures, unfortunately, they don't scan all that well. But let's try something.

Kymber, that's really cute! Does it have micro-beads on it?

Yeah! I'm going to "borrow" my daughter's tomorrow and take a picture of it too. It'll be in my gallery (hopefully) tomorrow afternoon.

I was in HEB the grocery store here in San Antonio and they have those small, and big altoid tins 2 for $3. I was just wondering if that was a good price? I also noticed that they have round altoid tins out now as well.

You can do better on the price. But ask around and you never know what you will get. I asked at work & 10 arrived on my desk the next day. I don't know if they emptied them out for me or what (came via someone's husband) but was grateful. I have also pained with a craft paint and foam brush. Only trick is to get by the hinge. Needs several coats and sealing so it looks nicer, but had lots of those little bottles left from years ago projects. The 1/4" O'So tape is perfect for doing beads along the edge.
Sorry, I haven't posted anything yet - just to scared to do it - I look at everyone else's lovely work and think mine would never match up.

Oh my goodness. Never, ever be afraid to post a picture here. So many times I've seen people say "I'm no good" and then they post stuff that just blows my work away. You are your own worst critic. Please post, we would all love to see your work.

Default Tins

The October 2004 issue of the PaperWorks magazine has an article on decorating the tins.

Here's the link to one in my gallery:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

I spray painted it copper first, then did pretty much what Alicia described with cardstock and microbeads. I'm looking forward to doing more. A friend just gave me a bunch of empty tins.

A lady that owns the little stamp store here in this area showed me a tin that she made. It was Awesome!! She put it in her bbq grill with newspaper and burned it. It burned all of the paint off and made it look really old. Then she used stazon ink and distress ink and made a memory album for her old pictures and memoribilia. It was really cool, if you're into that kind of look. She said to just keep adding newspaper until the paint is completely burned off, then after it cools wipe away all of the soot. Something different, I guess.

Jami ~ I bow to your gallery!! Your Topiary Tin is what inspired me to get the copper paint!! I loved it. Thank you so much for the idea.

I'm definitely going to scrounge the tins from work. We've decided to make these tins "door prizes" at my daughter's 13th birthday party. I have to get moving to make 8 of these.

Kymbers - THANKS!! :o

They will make really fun prizes! I was toying with the idea of using a thick cording to make them into necklaces. Haven't had a chance to try it yet. If anyone else has done this please let me know and post a photo. The gum tins are just right for a lip gloss and a little money

Just tell everyone you know that you are collecting all sizes of Altoids tins. You may be surprised at what you get

I haven't done this, and I don't know if it would work, but I was looking at pictures of dominoes the other day, and someone had glued (I guess with a very strong glue) a bead to the top of the domino, and they put the string through the bead to make the necklace. Maybe that would work? Just a thought.

Ooohhh - that's a cool idea. I was just thinking of gluing the cording all the way around and maybe trying a knot at the top or something. Haven't really thought it through yet.

I think Plaid makes a paint for metal in the small craft bottles at craft stores.

Last night some of my downline got together to discuss an upcoming stampcamp we're all doing together. We are planning to use the tins during this event, and we're trying to come up with some ideas for them. We wanted something that ladies would actually carry around & use them for:
Here are a couple:

Crayon tin - stamp the front using any Crayon set
Bandaid Tin - Stamp using the Bandaid in the Mini Mates set
Pill Tin - Stamp using the Pill bottle from the Nice & Easy notes set
Hair pins Tin - Stamp the front with any of the sports sets & use the tin for girls to hold any of the metal pins/barettes they have to remove from their hair when playing sports.
Sewing tin - Not sure what to stamp on this one

For our stamp camp we are going to use the Breast Cancer Set to stamp on the outside. Inside we're glueing a mirror to use as a compact.

For my daughter's birthday, I covered an altoids tin with the flowers from Shapes & Shadows, outlined in Close to Cocoa, and stamped in Rose Red, Old Olive and Rose Romance on Vanilla US CS. I covered it in microbeads.
I put a round tin inside, with the same time of stamping and beads on the top. I got an oblong mirror out of an old compact, tied pink grosgrain ribbon just around one corner of the mirror, and glued it in the top of the tin.
I filled the round tin with Advil...because every time she comes over, she asks for it! Then I put a really cute set of 3 little tiny 1 inch long chapstick thingy's that came in pink, orange and green from the Dollar Store.
I put the whole thing in a cello bag, tied fuschia organdy ribbon, and attached a tag that I laser printed her name on.
The whole thing just took me a few minutes, and she loves it!!
Such a fun idea, thanks to the great people on the DD Gallery, and Scheli for organizing our huge order of Altoid tins!!
