To Buy A Scor-Pal or Not to Buy a Scor-Pal, that is the question
Ok, I hope the catchy little title phrase worked and I can make a good decision by several knowledgeable people from this group.
Scor-Pals are not sold in a store near me and I would like to see one before buying one (online). I will be visiting a town this weekend that has an Archivers Store and I believe they sell Scor-Pals. Presently, I am using my Fiskars cutting tool and an embossing tool to get lines.
My questions:
1) as a beginning stamper and card maker, should I get one
2) does the Scor-Pal work better than the method I am using?
Carole, here is just one person's opinion. I'm still sort of a beginner, only been making cards for about a year and a half.
I first just folded my cardstock down the "middle" by hand, without any score line. They did not look too great, but I didn't know any different, so I thought they looked pretty good.
Then, I saw that you could use the groove in your paper trimmer and a bone folder to score down the middle, so that's what I did for about a year. Great improvement in how my cards folded and looked over hand folding.
Then I kept reading about everyone loving the Score Pal. It seemed kind of silly to me, to pay that much money for a sheet of hard plastic with some grooves in it, and I resisted for a bit.
I finally got one about 3 months ago, and I really, really like it. I think my cards look much more "finished" now. And you can do lots of other neat things with it besides just score down the middle of your card. The website has great tutorials to make fancy fold cards, and envelopes too.
I would say get it if you can. I ordered mine from the Score Pal website and haven't regretted my purchase. It's lightweight, can just stand up beside your chair when you're not using it, and its own bone folder stores right in the top of the board, so it's always handy and you don't misplace it.

I just got one as a gift. My husband ordered it through Amazon.com and it was shipped immediately with no shipping costs. I used it today and love it.
I also checked out the scor-pal sight and they have many projects and ideas to make good use of it. I hope you can get one and have fun with it!
You can do much more than just score a card with it! Make beautiful diagonally scored backgrounds - the texture is just fantastic! I make lots of envelopes. Use those great big blocks of scrapping paper you buy and ahve dozens of sheets you will never use, make the envie with design side in, and you have a gorgeous custom envelope. See www.thinkinginking.typepad.com for the scored background. You'll have to go back a ways to get to the card, but it is sooooo easy and so pretty. Great on masculine cards, too, which can be a little hard!
I got one and love it!!!!! I used to score with my Fiskars trimmer and the scoring blade and can't tell you the number of times I cut through the cardstock. Even if all you do is score cards, it's worth it. Once you start to do more, then you'll fall harder in love.

I love my Scor-Pal. All the creases on my cards, boxes, anything that I make are so much better than before. The manufacturer's price is $39.95 US plus shipping and handling. So, if you can find it for that price or less (if it ever goes on sale somewhere) - you're good.
I bought mine from Scorpal and found this site after my purchase. I have since bought some items from 7kidscollege and the service is excellent. I would have no problem buying from them again.
Until you get the Scor Pal - (I've got it on my wish list too....so many toys, so little $$$$ ), you can also use a hand held embossing stylus to score your card using the Fiskars trimmer.

I've had mine a couple months. I just love it. It sits right next to my paper trimmer and never gets put away. It's so easy to use. I ruined the paper the first time I scored because I used way too much pressure, but that only happened once. I've made cards with gate folds and the grid technique. Scor-pal just makes it so darn easy. I say GO FOR IT!

Thank you, Pat! I've been thinking for a long time if I should buy a Scor-Pal or not, and I decided I will buy only if it's on sale. Now I can't wait to see and play with it.
I've been going through the same debate. I couldn't figure out why everyone raved about it when my paper cutter had grooves I could use with a bone folder. But then I went to my LSS and used theirs. There really is a very obvious improvement in the folds! The Scor-Pal is now on my ongoing wish list to DH. If he'd only take the hint!!
A resounding "YES!!!" Get if you can. I have had mine for several months. I saw it listed as an item used to make various cards so I went to the website and called the company number. I talked to a very helpful lady (found out later that it must have been the owner/designer of the Score Pal, Diana Crick). I had called several stores locally but none had the Score Pal. When I told her, she asked me where I lived then asked me to hold on and she checked her shipping list. She gave me the name of a store locally that she had sent an order to so I jumped into the car and went there to do a 'hands on' tryout. Ended up buying from the Score Pal website because the cost even with shipping was less than the asking price without tax of the LSS. (I do support the LSS but even just a little saving of $$$ means more paper, ink, stamps, etc.) I use it often because I do more that just cards. It is great for many papercrafting projects. My Score Pal stays out for instant access between my Cuttlebug and paper cutter.
I also waited to buy one. Then my daughter announced her wedding date and asked me to make 175 nugget boxes, and the first thing I did was buy the Scor-Pal. I love it-makes my cards look that much better. And the nugget boxes are so much easier to score and fold.

I have both scor it and scor pal. Hands down the scor pal is the my favorite. There is no thinking with the scor pal. Scor it - is alright but too sharp of a metal edge for my liking and you have to think when using it - having to figure out where to put my c/s. Scor pal all the way and you wouldn't be sorry.

Yes, the score-pal is definitely worth getting. I was reluctant to purchase one because I was pretty happy with my previous method of scoring (I would score a nice line against the bar on my table top fiskars cutter - very accurate but not as fabulous as the score pal! )
In addition to scoring the fold on a card, I've found myself using it to add detailing (scored lines) to plain panels and it has really taken my card making to another level.
By the way, if you go to Archivers and decide you would like to buy a score pal, ask one of the clerks for a current 30% off coupon (there is one good until the end of July). They are usually more than willing to share these with a new customer. Oh, and they will also have a model you can play with before you buy, so if you don't see it out, ask for it. Have fun!
The Scor-Mat is a mat that's made to fit into the Scor Pal, so when you are done scoring you can put the mat on and keep working without having to put the Scor Pal away. Seems like a good idea! I might get one eventually.
If you know that you will only ever make cards, then you don't need it. But the first time you make a box or gift bag you'll wish you had a scoring tool like the Scor Pal. I had a scor-it and didn't care for it. My preference is the Scor-Pal.
