Paper Piercing

I was looking in the gallery at all the neat paper piercing and I was wondering how you get all the holes so even. There are even double rows. All I can think of is needlepoint canvas. Is this the answer?

I have heard of people using needle point canvas's but Stampin' Up sells a piercing mat pack that has a template as well. That's what I use and it works beautifully!

I use needlepoint canvas because I had that laying around on the day that I wanted to decided to paper pierce! It works well for me and I haven't looked for anything else.

I think Gina K has a set of piercing templates (circle, heart and square) on her website...very reasonably priced also.

They are reasonably priced, but I thought they looked like plastic canvas.

If I'm peircing straight lines I use my sewing machine without the thread, I love it!!

Ladies......There are many sites where you can purchase paper piercing templates in all kinds of designs. The Stampin' Up one is fine, but very small. I find that piercing mat difficult to use as it needs to be moved as you pierce the design around the card. Also, it offers very little variety for piercing. But on a good note, it is a good way to introduce yourself to paper piercing if you don't need any written instructions.

I did a search for paper piercing and came up with several sites. That's how I chose where to purchase mine from. I also purchased several from the stamp show I went to in April.

Also, I found there are different templates for piercing on vellum. These make smaller holes and therefore require a much thinner piercing needle.

I have the SU! template which is great, but I have recently found another very cost-effective solution: plastic canvas and thick craft foam.

I purchased a sheet of micro-square holed plastic canvas at Wal-Mart for about $1.20 (it's like regular canvas, but the holes are smaller, which guides your piercing tool better), and then I had a thick craft foam door-hanger from a while ago (it's about 3/8" thick), and that is plenty long enough for doing an entire card front without having to move the card around. Altogether it should cost you less than $3, which I think is a GREAT solution!

OH, and you can purchase plastic canvas in different shapes as well - I have a 6" circle that is great, and they have stars and a couple of other shapes as well, but they are usually not available in the smaller mesh sizes, but as long as you put your piercing tool in the corner of the holes , your lines will be spot-on. And the individual shapes can usually be had for about $.50 each at the local craft stores.

I purchased the Bazzill Stitz (I think that's the name). Anyway, they have alot of different templates. I think there are 4 or 5 to a package and come with a ring to hold them all together. They even have cute borders. These are for stitching and they even sell DMC thread in different colors. I just went to Michaels and bought the colors I wanted. These templates really make unique cards.

I use plastic canvas (circle and rectangular forms). I like this because I can also use it with my pens to place colored dots on my card instead of piercing. Like others have said, it can be bought very inexpensively at Walmart.

I use SU's mat and a Making Memorie piercer. Cheap
I just usually do straight lines and so the SU's fine.
For free flowing stuff, I just wing it or draw it first and then pierce.
Then erase.

I suppose a sewing machine set on zig zag stitch would make a nice double row, and using other pattern settings may be a fun experiment!

Something else you can do is make a drawing and position it with temporary adhesive over your cardstock and use it as a template. I hope this is easy to understand. . .

SU's classy brass stencils have piercing holes, too.

I can't seem to make a straight line even using a stitching template and piercing in the corner/edge of each stitch! I haven't tried the SU piercing mat though--are the holes smaller so that your lines HAVE to be straight?

I just use a regular ruler and pierce holes every 1/4 inch. Does the job just fine.

I just got SU's piercing template and WOW!! I'm a bit of a perfectionist so the spacing always was hard to get to my liking. This works great. I love the way you can pierce a corner PERFECTLY!!! It's worth the investment if you do a lot of piercing!

I just bought the cutterbee piercing bees. 2 of them for 10$. They are kind of like little adhesive runners except....they poke little holes! One is a single row and one is a double. It was a cheap solution, and it's easier than lining up a template. I just use my ruler and drag the cutterbee down the edge and I have perfect piercing.

I was looking in the Oriental Trading catalog today and they have lots of their own brand templates for very very cheap....packs of 6-10 different templates for under 6$! Check it out if you're looking to do it cheaply.

I never thought of using needle point canvas. I have a few of the Bazzill templates for piercing and sewing and another ruler with tiny holes 1/4 inch apart. I use that all the time. It came with a 1/2 inch thick cork board that is about 5x7 and a piercer. I got that kit at a scrapbooking expo.

I love the SU guide, which I use with a MMemories piercer, because you can see through it and line it up AND, the larger side is great for lining up brads (like when you do three in a row or three on a corner piece, and want to space them perfectly). My only complaint is that I wish it were a bit longer.

LOL!! I always had trouble sewing a straight line, by machine or hand! Think it would be any easier on paper than on fabric???!! I think it is just me! All joking aside, I use the SU! piercing template and it works very well; just wish it were *a little* bit longer so I didn't have to move it so often.

I got the new piercing templates I ordered from Ellen Hutson...I used one last night and boy am I loving the results...These are awesome templates...Very beautiful results.
Gonna have to get all of them now.

You can make you own, using word I printed out evenly spaced dots on vellum and it works great. Then I punch though the printed dots on to the card stock, the lines are straight and even. You can do 2 lines or more and get many differently spaced templates.

Ok, now I have a question for the experts. I understand and have done your basic paper piercing. What I want to know how to do is when someone has a stamped image and their background paper shows up as the pattern on a dress in the stamped image. When looking at the techniques, it always says paper pierced. I don't understand how this is done. My daughter thinks the image is just cut out. It almost sounds to easy. Is this right? You are thinking about paper piecing. Someone else can probably explain it better but you stamp the same image on your patterned paper and with a craft knife you cut out the dress part (or the part to be pieced) and then glue it over the stamped image on your card. This is probably clear as mud!

I've misread paper *piecing* for paper *piercing* and vice-versa many times. Paper piecing is when pieces of patterned paper are stamped and cut out and applied to the whole stamped image to get those colorful, patterned parts of the image. So your daughter is right about paper *piecing*. I think sometimes people type the extra *r* or leave it out by mistake when typing, and the words are so close and look so much alike I have to look twice to be sure I know which technique has been used.

Here's a little tutorial on it. It's very easy and the results are spectacular!

Don't throw away your old computer mouse pads. They work great instead of a craft mat or SU piercing mat. I LOVE my SU piercing kit but use my own old mouse pad since it is bigger.

Did it bother anyone else that you can buy the SU piercing kit but not the piercer? You have to buy the $40.00 tool kit to get a piercer. Luckily I bought one at Meijer for $2.99. In a pinch a tapestry needle will work.
