whats the difference between copic and prisma. I also need advice I want to buy prisma and need to know which ones to buy to use the gamasol. I love to color and water color it is so relaxing
Well, I can't help you with the Copics or Prismacolor markers.
But the prismacolor pencils are what you use with the gamsol. I am eager to try the Copics and learn to color with them. I've tried with the SU markers, and it's just totally different, I think. I want to color pretty stuff too!!
All of those are different products. There's copic markers, prismacolor markers, prismacolor pencils, prismacolor watercolor pencils.
If you want to do the magic colored pencil technique then you would need to be buy the prismacolor pencils as they have wax in them that the gamsol breaks down when you blend colors with a paper stump.
Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Dick Blick Art on line all sell individual colors of prismacolor pencils that you can start out with to see if you like the technique before you invest a lot of money in a set. There's a learning curve to using them. A word of warning though. It takes a while to master the technique. Took me months of practice before I was happy with the results. Was well worth it, but very time consuming.
The Copic and Prismacolor MARKERS are different products from the pencils so don't buy those if you want to use Gamsol. They blend in a whole different way then the prismacolor pencils do. I'm having a hard time learning to use them. Can't tell much of a difference between the Copic markers and the Prismacolor markers other than they have different tips. Prismacolors have smaller tips. Copics have a bigger brush type tip. Prismacolor markers cost a lot less so I'm leaning towards buying more of those than the Copic markers. They both color smoothly without streaking like regular markers do..
Watercolor pencils will not work with Gamsol either. They are designed to be used on watercolor paper and blended with a paintbrush and water or with a blender pen.
One difference between Copic markers and Prisma markers is that Copic are alcohol based and Prisma are water based.
Copic markers will not give the streaky (the color stays even) look that you would get with water color markers (you see a dark line when the stroke stops).
Copics are rather expensive...Prismas are less but still pricey.
I bought a set of Copic markers (12) and now have them listed on Craigs List. Prefer Prisma pencils and Prisma water color pencils. I'm no artist, I just like to color. They work for me
I checked the manufacturers website and the Prismacolor sketch type markers are alcohol based dye ink not waterbased as stated. They don't streak like regular markers do.
Maybe we are not talking about the same kind of Prismacolor markers. Prismacolor makes a couple of different kinds of markers.
I own a set called Prismacolor Art Markers (also called 4 in 1 sketch markers on some on line stores because you can sketch 4 different lines with the different tips on them). They are alcohol based dye ink markers.
Maybe this will help. These are the ones I am talking about.
If you scroll down the description it shows alcohol as the base.
Anyway, I also own Copic markers too. I use both brands when I color an image. I truly can't tell the difference between the two brands other than the tips. My Prismacolor markers have a finer tip on the end which is sometimes easier to use to get into tight places. The chisel ends are different on both brands. Depending on how you use them, you can get different effects and line widths. The Copics work better for me when I am filling in larger areas as the brush type tip is easier to use for those.
Deeth1 is correct... Prismacolor Markers are alcohol based dye ink markers ... just as Copic Markers are. (The "sketch" that was referred to is a style of Copic marker... not Prismacolor.) Both brands of markers blend well and won't leave streaks if used properly.
Prismacolor also makes colored pencils that the OP mentioned... that can be used with Oderless Mineral Spirits or gamsol.
I think there was just a misunderstanding of the terms... no harm - no foul.

I love this site. It took me a few months to figure out why I didn't like the colored pencil and Gamsol ( use use Turpenoid). I just couldn't make it blend properly. I kept thinking what is everyone talking about this doesn't work at all. Well dah I figured it out by reading this site and I was using watercolored pencils not the Prismacolor Premier pencils. (LOL) Well I found 5 oddball pencils in my stash and woe and behold they were Prismacolor. I tried it with the Gamsol and I fell in love. Bought the full 132 pencil set and loving it.
One question for everyone. Is there an eraser out there that would work with the Prismacolors. Needed one last night and none of my work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The best thing I've found is a Sakura Electric Eraser with its white vinyl eraser refills. It erases small areas well, is especially good for details, and is gentle enough not to damage the cardstock. It won't remove all traces of some of the darker Prismacolors, but it works better and more accurately than the other erasers I tested. Anyone have a color comparison of the Prisma markers vs SU, like the Copic chart?
Now, at my LSS the Copic Ciaos were $4 each and at Micheal's the Prismas were $3.89 each, so not much price difference there--although at M's I could use my 40% coupon on a set. I realize the Sketch markers are more, but aren't they the same ink anyway?

The Prismacolor Pencils are a wonderful choice. I love mine!
I have both Copic and some Prismacolor markers (I'm addicted to coloring I think).
I prefer the Copics, but that is just my preference, I find them easier to blend (for me). They are actually compatible with the Prismacolor markers and I've used them together when I needed a certain color.
I've also used the Copics or Prismacolor markers as a base and used the pencils over the top for shading. (You can still blend with the OMS over top. Make sure you do marker first though - because coloring over waxy things can clog the marker tips.)
One thing - the Prismacolor markers have a much stronger odor than the Copics - so if that is something you are sensitive to - you might want to check that before you buy a bunch.
does anyone know what markers work on glossy cardstock?
i use stazon for the outline stamps, but what can i use to color them in? the su markers kind of bead up and i am not sure if they ever dry completely, and yet if i brayer using the same dye ink it will dry fine. is there markers like stazon ink? are they the copic, prismacolor markers?

I would think any waterbased dye ink marker would work fine on glossy... just adjust and use a lighter touch.
You DON'T want to use alcohol ink markers (Copic or Prismacolor) with StazOn ink... it will make it smear and bleed...
The alcohol ink markers can be used on glossy paper, but you will not get the same smoothly blended look as on regular cardstock... it will look more like an oil painting... a cool effect... but not the same.
Why not use regular cardstock???

When I use ordorless mineral oil (not gamasol brand, I couldn't find it), it changes the color of the pencil, so it doesn't match the SU color anymore. Does anyone else have this problem?
I think it deepens the color for me, not really changing it, KWIM? But I don't know if paint thinner is the same or not...I tried something the person at the store told me "worked the same as OMS" but it really doesn't work as well. Similar, but the OMS is easier and doesn't leave a residue. just IMO. Doesn't have to be the Gamsol BRAND, though, I don't think (mine is the Mona Lisa from M's).
Do you have the chart listing which pencils match SU colors? I don't think they are all a perfect match, just pretty close. You could make your own samples by coloring a patch with the pencils and then blending them with your paint thinner--make a chart, like...

I use SU markers on SU glossy cardstock all the time with no problem - it takes a little longer to completely dry if I apply a lot of color, but it does dry and goes on very smoothly.

Can someone please explain the differences between waterbased markers (e.g. Stampin' Up! markers) and the alcohol-based Copic and Prisma - other than apparently alcohol-based goes on more evenly/no streaking. I haven't experienced much streaking with my SU markers over the years, and occasionally when it happens I just blend a little with a brush & water or the Blender Pen.
Someone also said that coloring in images stamped with StazOn should not be done using alcohol based markers. What about coloring directly on stamps with Copic or Prisma?
I've also heard about a sprayer attachment for use with the Copic markers?
Any additional details and comparisons will be appreciated! I just learned about Copic markers and really don't know much about them.

With so many choices it's confusing so I apologize if I'm making it worse... but I recently found out about several other products for coloring.
1st) Bic Mark-it's they are alcohol based, and the best part is they are on sale at Target this week 36 +4 free for $11.00 and the Bic web site has a coupon for $3.00 off! This is a very cheap alternative to the copics and even the prisma makers.
2nd) Koh i noor wood less colored pencils, these can be used with baby oil or gamsol, (I use baby oil gel). They are at Michael's pretty cheap especially with a coupon.
One other thing I have heard is to use colored pencils on top of markers to get the shading that is typically achieved with the expensive markers.
I really really want the copics, but for now I have decided that I have so many other products to use that I'll wait on them (until I can't hold out any longer)!

Copic Markers, Prismacolor Markers.- Use Brilliance Ink of Palette Ink and Heat Set or use Memento Ink. (No heat setting required.)
Colored Pencils:
Prismacolor Pencils, Koh-i-noor pencils. Use with Staz-on Ink and Odorless Mineral Spirits- not Mineral Oil. Can also be used with baby oil and goo-gone.
Do not use watercolor pencils with this technique. You need a pencil that is wax based like the two mentioned above. You can alos use crayola & roseart as well.

Gina K. did a wonderful tutorial in the Splitcoast weekly inking about a month ago on using the markers directly on stamps- go check it out (sorry I don't have the link)
As for the sprayer, you're thinking of the Copic Airbrush. this allows you to softly and quickly spray an even coat of marker onto your work. If you e-mail me I can send you a PDF brochure on airbrushing. Or, dig through Debbie Olson's blog a bit, since I haven't covered the airbrush on my blog yet.

just a question - you state that mineral oil cannot be used, but i thought that baby oil was mineral oil with perfume ( or something for the smell added.
