size of square cards
I've noticed alot of square cards being posted in the gallery. Does anyone no what size these are and the best way not to waste paper? Envelopes to match?

I just picked up some USPS approved clear envelopes from Stampendous that fit up to 5.5"x5.5". I have not used them for that (yet), but have sent out 4.25"x5.5" cards. They have a white finish on one side, so you can write on it (I use sticky labels) and the other is crystal clear. It seals with a sticky strip (remove cover) that just folds over... I always get positive comments about my cards when I take them to the PO!

I make 4 1/4 square and put them in regular A2 envelopes. That way there's no extra postage charge!
I also like making 5 1/2" square ones if I need some extra room. I order the medium square envelopes from SU.

I make square cards all the time. What size I make depends on whether or not I am handing the person the card or if I am mailing it.
I do have to say that I mostly make the 4 1/2" square cards. I absolutely love square cards. To me they are nice and easy for balancing out your design. I have a lot of square card samples posted on my blog if you are interested in checking them out at www.learntostampandscrap.com.
Good Luck,
Lynn

I make 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 square...I usually buy the prepackaged card and envelope combo's (come in white cardstock and black) at J's made by DCWV, with a coupon they are very reasonable. It is worth the extra .20 that I have to pay in postage to mail...envelopes that don't match the size of the cards just make me crazy (@nal, I know)!

I love making 5x5 cards. I just use a 5x7 envie to mail them in- no extra postage required.

I want my envelopes to match the size of my cards. I think they look less homemade ( even though they are).

for some reason i've never ventured out of the standard size card, i guess i think "oh i can get 2 cards out of one 8 1/2 x 11 piece of cardstock." i do believe it is time to venture out of the box!

What size envelopes do you use Lynn for your 4 1/2 square cards and does it require extra postage? Thank you.

When I make my 4 1/2" square cards, I still use the medium sized envelopes - they are 5 3/4 x 4 3/8" so they don't require extra postage. I just really like the square cards and think that they are adorable. Something different to play around with as well )
Thanks so those who commented on my blog. I really appreciate your kind words!

Mine are usually 51/2 x 5 1/2, although I did get some 5" ones at Christmas. For card blanks I make up myself I have an envelope template that will do both those sizes, and luckily we don't have the issue with square envelopes costing more. Personally I find anything smaller than 5" hard to work with :-).

I buy 51/2 X 51/2 envelopes from the office supply store and then make my cards 51/4 X 51/4, this way they fit perfectly.

Here's some suggestions to mimic some "store bought" cards that I've received. I add a strip of designer paper on each end and seal it off with some DST or redline tape.
I also got one that had a decorative punch on the extra end. Like 3 flowers lined up in a row in the left side. It was really cute. Just an idea.
If you can a single square card envie in the size you like, take it apart and trace it to make a template. Then you can make decorative envelopes to match.

Last time I went to the post office they told me the square card postage has changed. I used to go by the 20 cent rule but they now say the way they calculate it has changed. I didn't have one at the time so I'm not sure what it has gone up to, has anyone mailed any since the price increase earlier this month?

LOVE your blog - added it to my favorites folder! I like making 4 1/4" square cards (I can make two out of one sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock, with a 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip left over for embellishing...) All of the cards I made for the "Cow Parade" inspiration challenge were that size. They're in my gallery and on my blog, and there are a few others that size, as well. I've never had to mail any of them, so I'm afraid I can't be helpful there... The cards on my blog are here:
http://randomonpurpose.typepad.com/r...e-moo-too.html
Scroll down to see all four (snoop around the rest of the blog, too, if you'd like...)
Or they're in my gallery here:
gregzgurl's Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
The "Prints Pack Dahlia" and "Simple Little Circles" are 4 1/4" square, also.
I LOVE this size!

3x3 - Envelopes from SU
4.25x4.25 - Envelopes from A Muse which are 4.5 square (If sending it through the mail, I use a standard A2 envelope.
5.25x5.25 - Envelopes from SU (5.5 square)
I also like to make cards that are 6x3.5 that fit in a standard stationary letter sized envelope.
The 1st two can be economical on cardstock. The 2nd two are not... meaning you can't get 2 or more cards out of an 8.5x11 sheet of cs.

About envelopes for these
Forums at Splitcoaststampers Just to help out, I remembered seeing this thread about square envelopes and thought you all might want it. Now I am inspired to once again do some square or faux square cards. Even did a post on my blog about these. It's short and easy to do.

I looked everywhere to be able to give the credit for this idea and I'm so glad I found it because Patty is AWEsome! You can get 4 4inch square cards out of one piece of 12x12 paper (then they'd still fit in A2 envies to use steubner's great postage saving idea):
http://pattystamps.typepad.com/patty...-4x4-card.html
Great huh? :0)

Glad I saw this. I was going to do 4.25 X 4.25 square cards for my next camp, but I think I will do 4x4. Here is a link to JulieHRR's technique for keeping the square cards snug on the regular envelope...

Square Card Options
I've used the 4-1/4 x 4-1/4 size too, to take advantage of the A2 envy. If you want to use up some of that extra room in the envelope you can add a punched image like I did on this graduation card!
Graduation CASE Star Punch by PebbleKraft at Splitcoaststampers
Have fun with the square cards, though. They are a nice way to shake things up a bit.

So... I just finished these stinkin' cute 4x4 cards... and I got out my ScorPal and made 4.25x4.25 envies for them...
THEN I see on the USPS page that the minimum square envelope size is 5x5.

Since I came from the "scrapping world" all of my cardstock is 12x12 so if I want a larger square card I make 6x6 and then use the square envelopes form Prism. Although, many times I don't mail them so I don't use envelopes. Greensneakers.com has a lot of envelope templates, as does CTMH. I use several sizes of those as well...can't think of the sizes off the top of my head. I believe the one from green sneakers is either 5.5 or 5.25 square.

Yep, the only square ones I work with are 3x3, 4.25 sq. and 5.5 square, although the 5.5 square ones are less often.
