Stencil Monoprints

by Lee-Anne Cross

Ink up a stencil for a unique and colorful monoprint.

Supplies

  • Stencils (the Crafter’s Workshop TCW554 Butterfly Collage used here)
  • Distress Inks or Paints, or other water-soluble medium
  • Watercolor paper or cardstock
  • Rag or paper towel
  • Water mister
  • Craft mat
  • Other supplies as needed to complete the card (Stamps, sequins, adhesive and cardstock used here)

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Place stencil upside down on craft mat.

  2. Step 2

Add two, three or four colors of Distress Inks directly to the stencil.

  3. Step 3

Mist the inked stencil liberally with water.

  4. Step 4

Turn stencil over onto watercolor cardstock.

  5. Step 5

Press down with rag or paper towel to allow watercolor paper to absorb inks/water and to remove excess water.

  6. Step 6

    Remove stencil and gently blot.

  7. Step 7

Air dry or use a heat tool to dry.

  8. Step 8

Use the finished monoprint to complete a project.

This is really cool - I am going to give it a "try" - if I succeed, I will share, if not, well you know!!! lol

Maria, dye inks will work fine too! You may notice some separation of color in the inks, but maybe not too - and you may like that anyway! Experiment with what you have and let us know!

This is fabulous!

I keep seeing these craft mats in videos, but I don't know where to get one. I finally decided that I need one, as i try different media. A search for "craft mats" turns up a lot of unrelated items.

Hi Kim - search for teflon oven liners on Amazon - that's what the craft mats are. I have this one: http://amzn.to/1EJBZTk

My personal preference was the inks as opposed to the paints, but I love the technique.

What about the other stencil used in the video? The funky circles that was used at 2:26 in the video. Would you share the company and name of that one too, please. Thank you for your help.

Hi Marcia! I believe that stencil is called TCW mini paint lids. Hope this helps!
Lee-Anne Cross  |  Mon Sep 7, 2015 at 8:51 AM
Thank you Lee-Ann for your quick response. I think the Paint Lids Stencil is different than the one you used in the video. There are so many similar looking stencils. But I really appreciate you taking the time to research and respond to my question.
Thanks again,
Marcia

Sorry about that! Marcia, after some investigating...finally found it! It's from Stencil Girl and is called "Inky Circles".
