  1. Beginner with skills

    By Beate Johns

I was very excited to receive the Cricut™ for Beginners DVDs. I had recently acquired a Cricut, but it had been sitting in the original box since it arrived at my house.

I figured I would watch the DVD first and then start playing with it, but the DVDs are set up so that you can work while watching the DVD. Each lesson shows you how to use another function while creating a sample if you have the matching cartridge. After watching the clip about how to use the DVD about the different Cricut machines, the cutting mats and cartridges - I couldn't wait any longer. I unpacked my machine and jumped right in.

I have the original Cricut. While the lessons are shown on the Cricut Expression, there is a shorter video about the Cricut differences included. In that video you will be shown how to create the same thing with the original Cricut.

These videos make using your Cricut VERY easy. They take the fear out of trying out something new and really get you excited about the product. They even include little tips, like what to do with brand new mats so they aren't too sticky.

Buyer beware though ... you might have the compulsion to run out, upgrade your original Cricut to the Cricut Expression and purchase a whole bunch of cartridges ! I would recommend these DVD's to anyone who has her Cricut in a box (yes.....I know there are other people like me out there) and far more who are not 100% comfortable with their machine yet. You'll love these instructional DVDs. I certainly do!

  2. Cricut for Beginners – not just for beginners!

    By Jeanne Streiff

The Cricut™ for Beginners DVD set is jam-packed with information and projects. I was surprised at the number of step-by-step projects included in the two disc set. The lessons were easy to follow and well explained. The instructions and projects went well past the beginner level.

I had my Cricut machine set up as I was going through the lessons. I loved that I could pause as needed to work on a project and then go back and start the DVD again for the next step. I also scrolled back many times to jog my memory for correct settings. That was very helpful, as I am a visual learner who gets a little intimidated by lots of buttons and dials.

I have to admit that I’m one of those people that bought a Cricut, used it a couple times and then let it sit collecting dust because I didn’t want to take the time to figure out how to use all the features. These DVDs would have been very helpful to me when I first bought my machine. I would have been much less intimidated. I had fun going through the lessons on the Cricut for Beginners DVDs. This is a very useful tool for both beginning and more advanced Cricut users.

  3. Fabulous Hints & Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Cricut!

    By Sharon Harnist

I was so excited to find out there was an instructional DVD set for the beginning Cricut™ user, because I was one of those people who had not taken the time to do very much with my Cricut Expression machine yet. I just needed a push to unlock all of the mysteries and start creating the things I knew it was capable of!

The lessons and projects covered in this generous 2-disc instructional DVD set were very well presented, easy to understand and didn’t move too fast. One can easily follow along with your own Cricut machine and try the lessons and projects for yourself.

I learned a lot of great tips for using the Real Dial Size, Multi-Cut, Blackout, Shadow, Paper Saver, Quantity, Auto Fill, Flip, and the Fit To Length and Page features that I knew existed with this machine but I just didn’t know how to properly use them or when! These DVDs teach you how to use every button, dial and feature of whatever Cricut machine you own (or may want!) and give great examples of when you may want to use those features.

I now feel much more comfortable with my Cricut machine and how to properly use it with all of its great features. I would highly recommend this DVD set for the Cricut beginner and/or anyone thinking about making a Cricut purchase!

  4. I learned how to use my Cricut!

    By Sherrie Siemens

I was excited to be asked to review the Cricut™ for Beginners DVD. I have just started playing with my own Cricut Expression, and I needed some help understanding the capabilities of this die cutting machine.

These DVDs do a great job from beginning to end. I immediately went to the screen “How to use this DVD” and was given an overview of what to expect. I appreciated the fact that there were files that I could print for the projects shown. This is handy, as I can reference them at any time and do not need to try to find the spot again on the DVD. I also like the key terms and functions sheet that I could print. I now keep this by my machine for a quick and easy reference.

I did like that the DVD was broken down into sections. I could learn in the “lessons” section and could apply what I had learned in the “projects” section. This was great for the harder concepts such as “fit to length”. I gained an overall understanding in how the icons are orientated and how to adjust them to my specific needs.

These DVDs were great at explaining all the features of the Cricut machines, but they did not go into detail explaining how to cut odd items such as vinyl and iron on fabrics. That being said, the knowledge that I gained in cutting card stock I could interpret and apply to these non-traditional mediums. One area of improvement that I would suggest would be the sound volume on the DVD’s. I found the music in the menus quite loud and the speaking in the segments quite quiet.

Overall this is a very informative DVD for beginners. It helped me immensely with the basic and advanced functions of this complex machine.

I just ordered the Expression 2 - the 5th Anniversary edition. This will be my first Cricut. Would this DVD set be helpful?

Jaime   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 5:15 AM

I own a Cricut Expression that is still in the box so the Cricut for Begininners DVD is exactly what I need. However I am deaf and before I order the DVD I would like to know if the DVD has closed captioning or if it has subtitles? I meet with several other deaf ladies where we do crafting projects together and would benefit from using the Cricut more.

Carol   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 5:30 AM

I’ve considered purchasing a Cricut, and I would definitely get this to go along with it…after reading your reviews.  Thanks girls!!  (Gorgeous projects too!!)

Rose Ann Reynolds   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 7:32 AM

I have the Expression anniversary also. Does it give you instruction on how to make base cards.  I make A2 sized cards and that is where I have my problem.  What sizing will give me that size and are all the cards able to be made into A2 cards expect of course, the speciality and square cards shapes. Thanks!

Jan   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 9:09 AM

Hi Carol,

Unfortunately the DVD does not offer closed captioning or subtitles.

beate   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 9:23 AM

I have the original Cricut (the mat is 6” x 12”). Will I be able to use the DVD? I noticed that I can’t use some of the stuff on some of the cartridges, like the envelopes.  Thanks!

Claudette Pace   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 11:07 AM

Jamie and Claudette,

I received a response from Cricut for Beginners regarding your questions. Here is the companies response:

Unfortunately the DVD was filmed before the release of the E2 machine, so no reference is made.  I personally have not used the E2, but I believe it has all the same features as the Expression with the exception that it uses a touch-screen.  Therefore, consumers can still benefit from the DVD if they wish to learn such concepts as Fit to Length, Mix-n-Match, Quantity, etc.  They will just need to locate such functions on the touch-screen.

Regarding the A2 card, we teach how the Cricut measures shapes so you can generally cut the correct sized object.  With the Cricut, you control the height of the object, but not the width.  So a card can be cut at a 4 ½” in height, but there is no way to adjust the width using the Cricut alone.  Exact measurements can be achieved by using Cricut Design Studio or The Gypsy (which is not taught on the DVD).  However, we do cut several cards and envelopes on the DVD, so the concept of cutting cards should be easily achieved by watching the lessons.

Thanks Lori.  I’ve tried cutting envelopes with the original Cricut, but they come out too small - like gift envelopes.  I only have a few of the cartridges, since I just got the Cricut a few months ago.  I plan to get the Design Studio - will that help me at all?

Claudette Pace   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 2:25 PM

I have both an original Cricut and an Expression.  I LOVE this DVD.  It helped me so much even though I have used my original Cricut at least a hundred times.  This video is great for someone who still has their Cricut in the box, but will also provide tips for those of us who have experience using our Cricut.  Totally worth the purchase price!

Rebecca Fahrney   |  Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 6:10 PM

The DVDs are viewable in DVD players that have dual-layer playing capability.  Almost all TV DVD players can play dual-layer.  Consumers will need a computer to access the printable cheat sheets, .cut and .gypsy files.

How can you print the data sheets that are on the DVD?

Carol Phillips   |  Fri Sep 23, 2011 at 6:14 AM

Hi Carol - I asked about your question. Here is the response that I received (pasted below). Good news!

Q:  How do I find the additional projects, Design Studio and Gypsy files?

A: PC Users: Insert either CFB Disc 1 or CFB Disc 2 into your computer’s disc drive.  Next, click Start, My Computer, and then right-click on your computer’s disc drive and select “Open”.  This will open the CFB DVD’s folder.  Double-click “Cricut for Beginners Projects” and here you will find the folder for each project on that DVD.  Each folder contains a picture, cheat sheet, .cut file, and .gypsy file.

MAC Users: Insert either CFB Disc 1 or CFB Disc 2 into your computer’s disc drive.  Next, click Finder and then Devices.  Click “Cricut for Beginners Disc 1 (or 2)” and here you will find the folder for each project on that DVD.  Each folder contains a picture, cheat sheet, .cut file, and .gypsy file.
